The facility is a bit run down in areas but they keep common rooms and areas of dining clean. They struggle to retain staff and that can get the residents down. Not sure if it is a top issue but there is trouble with the management as well. There are some dining staff that are solid and I am thankful for that. It almost feels as if they have scraps to work with-not sure if they intend for that feeling but it feels like they do what they can for not getting good resources. Overall happy with the choice because we are getting what we pay for as it is on a lower price point for senior living.... Read more

Do it. It is the best decision we could have made for my mom. It's a real community where the residents care about each other.

Response from Heatherwood Retirement Community
August 29, 2024We are very happy to have provided you with such a positive experience!
The elevator in the skilled care building has been down at least a month and will be down for another few weeks. Elevator in Independent Living is unreliable. Food options on menu is not always available. Sometimes, salads or hotdogs or milk isn't even available. Rent increased but food options and taste decreased, driver to take to doctor visits are limited and elevator is Out of Order sometimes so no way to get downstairs.

April 28, 2023We sincerely thank you for your positive review and look forward to seeing you again soon!
Other than the walk way being exposed to the elements - for example on windy days if you in the walk way it can be chilly and since the flooring is concrete if it rains there is a chance of it freezing. However besides that it is a very nice community and everybody there is so friendly. We have already recommended this community to other families and we will continue to do so.

I would tell a friend that they are a wonderful, warm community that deeply cares about its staff and residents and you can tell from the well attended events and the kindness staff. I would ask that they increase their capacity to take residents on trips. Maybe buy another van? They only have 1 van and the same group of women sign up at each outing so as not to leave room for other/ different residents to go.

We haven't had any issues so far, when mom wasn't up for meals they brought them up to her and have always made sure mom is okay. Overall the community is very clean. My mom loves it there and has recommended the community to other people. They have a library, were you can read and do puzzles. The residents receive 3 meals a day plus there is a full kitchen in her room. They have a chef in the main kitchen and most items are homemade, with many choices to choose from. They ask residents for what items they want to eat that might not be on the menu and will add it to the menu, there are waitress that come to the table and take your order and all the food is made to order. We really like that her room is like a whole apartment with a step in shower. She really enjoys being in this community. The community is out in the country, open area and safe. They have transportation for the residents to get to doctors, they have trip to the stores like target and other day trips.

My mother just loves everything about it. She's like a new person since she moved there. She really enjoys the friendship and the activities. And she likes the apartment. A unique feature that factored into our decision was the fact they have covered walkways so you don't have to go outside to get to meals, etc.

My experience with Heatherwood has been excellent. The staff are helpful and communicative, the room is very nice, large and has ample storage. The care has been excellent - the price increases the more care the person needs.

Due to the pandemic the food has been delivered to the residents' room. The food is being delivered on time and hot. I like the community and I enjoy living here. The floor staff is kind and bends over backwards to assist you. All the rooms have big sliding doors to either balconies or lawns and they are large in size.

My father lived there. The staff did not clean his apartment it got unsightly. Staff did not clean it even after been asked to. Poor communication with management not returning calls or emails. Not many activities. Not even a TV social room. Then he got sick from poor nutrition and Dr ordering wrong meds. Not for elderly who need help. Spare them the agony.

We looked here when we were looking for options. It was too much like the independent place we had just come from and we were looking for something different. It was similar an independent place.

Heatherwood was very good. It's not a real modern facility, but it was very charming and very well laid out. The main thing about Heatherwood is they really care about their people and it is primarily independent. The food was terrific. The chef was a five star chef. The food was absolutely spectacular. They did activities and some concerts there. They have skilled nursing in a separate building but is not a secured dementia unit.

A Place for Mom has scored Heatherwood Retirement Community 9.2 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
