They could have had better organization and communication. They initially where conducting some pretty heavy repairs, a few safety issues that were addressed once brought to their attention. Based on the experience we have had so far, I would recommend this community to other families. They have new managers who had just started when we came on board so I think they have done well through the transition as changes always hard. Overall a nice community with friendly staff, wonderful / active lifestyle with opportunities to be as active as one would like. Staff is caring and attentive - quickly becoming extended family to the residents

I have no regrets with my decision to live here! The staff is great. They are very pleasant when I have a question or need help. Once a week, a housekeeper comes into my unit to mop/vacuum the floors, clean the bathroom & kitchen, change the bed linens and dust the furniture. I especially like the meals, they are healthy & tasty. The chef has monthly meetings with the residents to address their requests and needs. There are card games almost every day. There is also a theater that shows movies and hosts religious services. They also have a gym with lots of exercising equipment. There is a in-house pharmacy and small store. Needless to say, there are many amenities available, too. I would definitely recommend Emerald Oaks. I have spoken to many of the residents who have lived here a long time and are still happy with their experience.

Emerald Oaks didn't have any availability for our loved one.
We really love Emerald Oaks. My father-in-law has really enjoyed it and has embraced the social aspect of it, despite going there saying he wasn't going to make friends and wanted to keep to himself. It has really helped his mental sharpness to stay engaged with people - playing games, going on outings, etc. It has been a really good experience for him. We love the apartment. It's roomy, so he can fit a great deal of furniture in it. He's very comfortable there. As far as the food, some of the dishes are good. But the vegetables tend to be bland and mushy, and the food in general is lacking in flavor. While it's not great, It's not terrible either.

It's been a very positive experience. The food here is great, but the menu needs to be tweaked. For example: they had a Spanish meal the other day that had broccoli, but you typically don't see broccoli with traditional Spanish meals. They have an older clientele and they need to be concerned about their health, salt intake, and how they're eating overall. Emerald oaks shouldn't be responsible for that, but the resident themselves should take more of an initiative. Some of their activities include different card games like hearts & bridge, as well as bingo. My apartment is one of the smaller apartments, but we do have a front room, a kitchen, and a bedroom. If and when we have visitors, they have common areas where we can sit and talk, like the library. They have couches and chairs that are out of the way from everyone else. The community allows pets; they also offer transportation to appointments and their weekly store runs with a 24hr notice, as the bus only holds 14. I would certainly recommend Emerald Oaks to others, it's one of the best.

We toured Emerald Oaks Retirement Resort and it was a good tour experience. We ultimately chose another community because of their various floor plans, the ability to be on the ground floor since I have a grand piano in my apartment, and a closer proximity to family members.
The community is a good place. Communication is good between the staff and myself. They return calls in a timely manner. The food could be better, it lacks seasoning, variety, and the portions are small. I would recommend this community to others.

The food is great and the staff could not be friendlier and more helpful if they tried. We only moved here because our family insisted and now we are very glad we did. They have done an outstanding job of protecting all of us from the corona virus. Now that things are opening up somewhat, we are finding out about all of the activities and entertainment that they normally have, Our apartment is very comfortable and nicely laid out. We have also found all of the residents to be very friendly. There is a very happy group of people here, probably because they are treated well. They are very responsive to our needs. They are very pet friendly and because of that there are a lot of pets here. If our little dog could talk, I am sure he would give a 5 star rating. Their name is very appropriate, Resort Style Communities. It is not cheap but a great value for what you get living here. I would give it an unconditional recommendation to anyone.

In the midst of a global pandemic, the facility will not have residents wear a mask when in common spaces, despite advice from the CDC and direction from the Governor. The straw man argument that the "entire facility" is their home is jeopardizing the lives of hundreds of people in a high-risk population. Humanity aside, it endangers the profits and reputation of the facility and the company that owns it. They don't seem to care about either. Requiring masks when in the public spaces is the most caring, compassionate, and sensible thing a place could do. They are neglecting to do the bare minimum and it's shameful.

My parents moved to Emerald Oaks just a little over a week ago. I cannot possibly say enough in this review to give credit to this amazing place. When the word “resort” is used, it is not an exaggeration. Emerald Oaks is beautiful and perfectly maintained. The staff is extraordinary. [Name removed] was so welcoming and helpful, [names removed] are obviously a great choice for resident managers. Everything was done to ensure that my parents were making a good decision. I have not encountered a single staff member who has been less than helpful. As I have opportunity to meet the residents, they are obviously happy to be there. That speaks highly of this wonderful place. The meals are exceptional and there are many activities. There is even an actual movie theater!!! My parents are very happy to have found Emerald Oaks, and that is the best endorsement of all. [Name removed]

This is a newer facility and very nice on the in side. Outside offers nothing, no swim pool, poor landscaping, loud traffic, and no place for residents to enjoy the outdoors. Our host was new and could not or would not answer some questions. Lunch was excellent and had many choices. The activities calendar did offer as much as other communities we visited. They do not offer assisted living, or memory care, which we would like to have available.

Emerald Oaks Retirement Community (Senior Living) used misleading marketing techniques to promote 24/7 onsite doctor/ nurse medical team services. In fact their website states: "...We always have a doctor on call to handle adjustments in medication, continued consultation, and urgent medical needs when they arise." Emerald Oaks promoted these services as essential for them and the medical team to process the application for Long-term Health Care on our behalf. When in fact, Emerald Oaks is "NOT" a licensed Long-Term Care Facility. First alert... When I had a little trouble getting out of the car and asked for some help the front desk concierge told us to "Call EMS (911)!" When asked; "can you get someone from the medical team? The response was; "the medical team does not work on the weekend." Not long thereafter, I was subjected to the lack of medical assistance again, for a COPD breathing treatment and they called 911! An ambulance paramedic gave a breathing treatment - returning breathing to normal - but took me to Baptist Hospital where I was admitted without any records as a 'new patient' with 'new doctors.' Beware, this can happen to the best of us. I am a retired Professor and Physician, MD, DRPH, MPH. When it comes to trust in health care providers, reliability and proficiency are vital. As you will see elderly health care comes at a high price. Published Elderly Patient Medical Studies have resulted in new standard protocols to avoid unnecessary expose of elderly patients to hospitalization, repeated assessments, or changes to medications, needless testing procedures and exposure to hospital contagions. A team of 'Unfamiliar New Cardiologist' gave their 'New Patient (Me) a 'Beta Blocker', whose heart rate went down to 30 and stopped! After reviving me two cardiologist informed their new patient of repeated heart-stopping caused by the Beta Blocker and recommended surgery to insert a "pacemaker!" While heart-stopping episodes continued on a daily basis, Tramadol, an opioid which contains codeine and morphine; resulted in a near medically induced comatose state, the inability to speak, to concentrate, confusion, unusual weakness, plus loss of control of bodily functions. Codeine and morphine are listed as drug allergies on patients' medical records for nearly 30 years. In summary, 1. Patient remained in speech therapy for about 6 weeks, even after hospital discharge. 2. Patient's right arm and hand became dysfunctional, inflamed, burgundy in color, edematous with severe pain due to prolonged IV insertion. The damage appears permanent and disabling. 3. Patient's bed sores were painful and perplexing throughout hospital stay. 4. Patient developed pneumonia the last week of extended 30 day hospital exposure. Emerald Oaks and the medical team failed to provide 24/7 service as originally promoted and promised. As for 3 meals per day... I missed them too. Additionally Emerald Oaks kept our deposit. Emerald Oaks management and the Regional Director of the Medical Team readily admitted to the use of 911 Public EMS as essential for their risk mitigation strategy to avoid liability. Further stating it is a common practice throughout the industry. Emerald Oaks Staff uses the Medical Team to promote Emerald Oaks Long-term Health Care Services; when it is in fact "NOT a licensed Long-Term Facility, providing 24/ 7 Doctor and Registered Nursing Services?" At the very least, it also appears to be an exploitation of San Antonio's public Emergency Medical Services (EMS) by corporate health care providers and its improper abuse of taxpayer's public funds to avoid responsibility.
