Our family's negative experience

Keep in mind that this was our first experience with a memory care facility. With the care services- it is probably better than cheaper facilities, but it seemed quite understaffed, especially considering the amount of care dementia patients with mobility issues require. For the value for cost it is difficult to answer because the cost was surprisingly high, and I can't really judge the value compared to other facilities since we haven't used another facility * Overall, we were highly unsatisfied with Brookdale North High Point. Mom required "some" exercise, as most people do. Her walker was taken from her room 1 day after admission, and she was pushed in a wheelchair from that day forward. She lost so much strength during her short stay that we had a very difficult time teaching her to walk again after she left. She was ASKED if she wanted to get up in the morning, go to meals, participate in activities and socialize. When she replied "No" she was allowed to sleep late, eat alone in her room, and lie in bed many days. She was wet with urine multiple times when I visited, and her laundry was always full of urine soaked clothing. The amonia smell in her room was strong enough to make your eyes water. After we finally hired a home caregiver and removed her from Brookdale, my father's debit card was charged for an entire month, instead of a couple of days. I was lied to by multiple people in the High Point location and the corporate office concerning reimbursement and crediting his bank account. The experience was very bad for my family. I hope all memory care facilities are not like Brookdale.

Brookdale High Point North Memory Care Provides Great Care

I help guide families through the often difficult task of finding the right memory care facility for their loved ones. Brookdale High Point North Memory Care is a facility I highly recommend to my families. The team there is committed to providing attentive care and enriching the lives of their residents. The facility is always clean, and the residents are well groomed and dressed first thing each morning for a day of activities and stimulation. This is also the facility my family chose to place our grandmother in. Please consider this home for your loved one.

When The Time Comes, Brookdale HP North Memory Care Will Be The Place for Mom

Brookdale High Point North Memory Care (at 1564 Skeet Club Road) just felt RIGHT from the moment I first stepped foot on the property. The Sale Manager there at the time of my visit [date removed] was warm, compassionate and inviting. I felt as if I was seeing a beloved family member I had not seen in a long time and we were just catching up. My preconceived notions with this decision began to melt away. I felt less that "putting" mom somewhere, but rather, "placing her somewhere. (I'm a firm believer that people put things away that are of little value; however, they place things somewhere special whose value is intrinsic.) The community and facility not only LOOKED CLEAN and well-kept, it SMELLED the same--both upon entry and throughout. Coupled with the friendliness of the staff--none of whom seemed coached/coerced to exchange pleasantries--THIS WAS HUGE for me. Was also impressed with the safety features there. When The Time Comes, Brookdale HP Memory Care will be the place for mom.

Would Recommend

I cannot understand the high cost, although all memory care centers are all very expensive. We had a good experience overall. The only negative is that Mom has trouble walking and uses a walker with care. She walks very slowly but needs the exercise. Within a few days of being admitted, she was given a wheelchair and moved around in the chair. I never saw her use the walker again. She was signed up for PT once a week, but I don't think she was walking on a daily basis. She did get a lot weaker during her stay at Brookdale. I wasn't there every day, so these are just my observations from the visits my Dad and I had.

Worst place EVER

Please do not send your loved one there! They sell the place like it is the best thing since peanut butter, but it is a horrible place. The staff do not care, the director will pay lip service, and the corporate office is just as bad. Our experience was horrific - left to sit in urine for 6+ hours, over medicated so our family member would be docile and they wouldn't have to be bothered by them, no worthy activities, inconsistent care, CNA's that actually care are few and FAR BETWEEN, charge you for every little thing but not provide the care you are charged for, never can get anyone to answer the phone, left unattended to suffer multiple falls, feces left on the bedroom floor for days, lost our family members clothes, found other residents' clothes in our family's room weekly, didn't bathe our family member for over a week, wouldn't brush their teeth or dentures, and so on and so on. Spare yourselves heartache and frustration.

Staff and Leadership issues, recommend paying more elsewhere

First I will say that there were some caretakers that were excellent. My loved one with dementia is now in another place, so I have been able to compare. The 2 stars is generous. My loved one was here for a year; the most distressing of my life. Because of the lack of leadership, and extremely high turnover, and other staff issues, the gaps in care were egregious. Because my loved one couldn’t communicate, we wouldn’t have known had we not witnessed directly. Meals 2 hours late, sometimes not at all, waking him at night or not checking on him overnight at all, not changing him when wet, not following dr orders. Two caretakers overnight for all memory care residents (40+). Meds not given or given incorrectly, a push to overmedicate him for issues caused by these gaps. And when my loved one acted out because of all this, they required us to pay for a 24/7 sitter on top of normal room fees. Management was dishonest and perpetuated problems. I’m happily paying more elsewhere now. Beware.

I was pleased with the place up until they did what they did at the end.

I understand that a person can fall in any assisted living place, as well as nursing homes. There should be better ways to monitor residents, especially the ones who are prone to falling, in both types of environments. Where it gets really bad at Brookdale, is their deliberate failure to respond, and acknowledge messages, and complete lack of courtesy to communicate their intentions regarding the continued care of a resident. In other words, after falling two times within a few days, then telling me he could go back after therapy with a hospital bed, then I had to find out from a 3rd party that they would NOT take him back!!! That is horrible client service.

This is a community that treats the elderly with the dignity that they deserve. They have very caring activity directors that always have activities going from bingo to sing alongside to arts and crafts. These activities have made the transition from home to an assisted living facility so much easier for my father. I am so happy that we found a facility that takes good care of him and assists him in enjoying the rest of his life.

A Good Place to Be

This is a nice place if you have to have your loved one here. They have activities here; however, if your loved one doesn't want to participate in or they are unwilling the community falls short. I wish the staff would find a way in trying to find a way for the residents that don't want to participate in the activities a way to participate in some offering. The community misplaced the feet of my loved one's wheelchair and they haven't been able to locate these for us. They also lost some of the bed linens from my loved one's room as well. I've had a really good experience here overall, compared to a long term community my loved one is at.

Read the reviews carefully before choosing this home for your loved one.

Overall I'm happy with Brookdale. The caregivers are good. My loved one is being taken care of and eating well. She's clean, and it never smells in the building. The other residents look like they're well taken care of also. The issues I have are really with administration and upper management. They are just doing a job and look at people as numbers almost. They don't have the knowledge to handle dementia behaviors, despite having doctors and psychiatrists on staff. As a memory care facility, they should be able and willing to work through dementia-related issues. I find their inability to do so very unprofessional.

Highly recommend

The thing that stuck out to us the most about Brookdale High Point North Memory care was the value for the money but also just the speed that they were able to get things moved at - they had immediate availability and in our situation that is exactly what we needed. Our initial meeting with [name removed] was superb. The staff did everything they were supposed to do and even went above and beyond. I would for sure recommend Brookdale to others.
