I wish I could have given a "0" for some of those!! Lack of training!!!Especially in memory care! NO engaging activities for memory care residents as was promised (just put in front of TV most of the time). This has been going on for one year now! And this has been brought to management's attention several times. Lack of bathing/hygiene for my loved one. Also brought to management's attention. Management needs to be more involved and hold their employees accountable. Too many aides just sit around on their phones! Also brought to management's attention. Up until a couple months ago when a new health & wellness coordinator was hired, communication and care was terrible. It has improved since the new coordinator came onboard.

Location and friendliness were the main reasons we chose Brookdale Harrisburg. I would like to see a person at the lobby desk on weekends.

It is a nice place. The people are friendly. We picked this community, because of the price and openings. Needed somewhere quick.

Response from Brookdale Harrisburg
October 20, 2023Thank you for choosing Brookdale and taking the time to share your feedback.
Staff are friendly and kind. My family member really likes it there and seems happy. Communication could be better overall. There is lack of knowledge with some staff in caring for certain health related matters. On many occasions I've had to bring issues to the attention of upper management staff. Monthly rate went up very significantly after only several months of residing there! Security concerns with certain areas of the facility. Short-staffed on occasions.

Overall our family and our loved one are satisfied with the experience - there are a few little kinks that need to be worked out like maybe getting a better breakdown of the extra costs. However we still would recommend this community to other families to check out for their loved ones. The residents can go on the bus and do scenic bus trips, and around Christmas time they took the residents out to see Christmas lights. There is plenty of different things for them to do. The physical therapist department is great.

I would not recommend Brookdale Harrisburg. They had a tendency to raise their rates, and that happened almost instantly. So you were stuck with a higher monthly bill the next time it was due, without any explanation as to why you were paying more. Within the first six months, the bill went up around $1000, which on a fixed budget definitely hurts. They also had no flexibility when it came to medications. They insisted that we use their pharmacy, which was not free, and would not allow us to use our pharmacy, which was free. And how friendly they are depends on if you're coming in or leaving. They were friendly coming in but not coming out.

We chose Brookdale based on the location, it is very convenient for us and is able to suit our loved ones needs. The meals and dining service is quite adequate. The could improve on the care coming from the doctor - they could read the charts better and pay a little closer attention to detail and follow through with the complaints they receive.

Our family had an in person tour and we just did not really see the staff being that friendly and we knew other residents living there who were moving out because they weren't happy
Response from Brookdale Harrisburg
August 17, 2022We appreciate you taking the time to visit and are sorry to hear you feel this way. Our staff is committed to providing the highest-quality service and care and we will share your feedback with our management team.
I would recommend Brookdale Harrisburg to others. I feel like my loved one is definitely taken care of. The people are really friendly, and it's a clean place. It's staffed very well, there's enough people for everybody. It's not a big sprawling kind of place, its very quaint. For memory care, it's all on one level and behind a locked door. There's an alarm that will go off if the code isn't put in. Communication between the community and our family has been great! They usually contact me through phone and they'll send emails of events going on within the community. I also like the fact that I can visit 24/7, whenever I'd like.

Brookdale Harrisburg is a very high quality community. Everyone there is very friendly, competent, and capable. I would highly recommend anyone in need of these types of services to consider them. The attention that all of the residents get there is impressive. They have plenty of activities for the memory care folks. And there's a great sense of family there, which is really neat. They treated us like family, as well as my mom.

Our family had an in person tour and Brookdale is nice, but our first impression right when we walked in is that it looked like a hospital setting, Very structured, the halls were kind of bare and we did get to see the community but a lot of our time was spent in the office. We also did not really see any residents out and about.
Both of our parents had covid which we are not blaming Brookdale whatsoever, but they quarantined our loved ones for so long a little over 3 weeks. For someone with dementia in that type of situation our mother just declined dramatically. The care was just not what we had paid for, not what we were expecting and a little disappointing.

There are no RN's only 2 LPN on sight. Some of the aides seemed to be interested in the residents. There were other aides that were just looking at the clock. The community tried to take the residents out to lunch prior to COVID, once a month.. Depending on the level of care your loved one needs, be cautious. In the beginning they tell you how great and wonderful they are. The tour showed us around. However, after my loved one moved in there was no communication. I feel they need a communication class and risk management class. I had a virtual visit, and say my loved one was sick. On [date removed] I told the community that my loved one needed to be tested for COVID. Within 6 hours my loved one was in ICU. The community wasn't wearing any masks. On [date removed] they had 15 residents and 16 staff test positive of COVID. There was one death in the community from COVID. The community packed everything up for my loved one. I had to have a friend pick up the box of my loved one's items and deliver it to other community which is 30 miles away. I wouldn't recommend this community to anyone.

Total disappointment. Arrived for my appointment to find the front desk unattended. During my 1 hour visit at no time did I see anyone occupy the front desk. Employee was unable to answer a majority of my questions. Was not sure if the offered respite care which was my main goal. No onsite skilled care available. Was taken into actual resident rooms without them being present and probably without their consent. I was also shown 3 empty units. Rooms are of adequate size but lack refrigerators. A small dorm size refrigerator is available to all residents to share. The facility desperately needs a face lift. Everything just looks tired. Nice outdoor covered patio for residents to enjoy. Nice front porch with chairs as well. Plenty of activities but schedule posted was of the previous month.

My sister and I were very impressed the minute we walked in. We felt mom would be very comfortable there. [Name removed] was very well prepared and answered all of our questions and gave us a tour of the facility and then worked the numbers with us. We found out the other extended family members had used the facility for short term stays and enjoyed the experience and highly recommended it. Also found out the over the last 2 years it has had a total renovation. No longer dull and dingy looking.

Brookdale seems to really care about their facility, their staff and residents. We liked the small size of the facility, tenure of many staff members. Very professional. Feel this would be a good fit for our family member.

I was told there was vacancy for my father in the memory care unit. I went to look at the place and was told there isn't any room available. I wasted my time. This place was [Removed], nasty. I wouldn't let my father stay there if they did have an opening. [Removed] is super nice and very polite.

A Place for Mom has scored Brookdale Harrisburg 8.1 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
