As recommended by A Place for Mom, we scheduled a tour. We took the checklist with us. 1 Clean smell 2 Residents well groomed and engaging in numerous activities 3 Caregivers assisting where needed 4 Staff friendly and engaging 5 Landscape and facilities well maintained 6 Transportation provided for errands, outings, and appointments 7 Nutritious and appealing meals 8 Staff doctor, nurses, medication management, and next door to a major hospital 9 Good housekeeping, bathing routines, beauty salon, and spa 10 Calm and inviting environment 11 Physical therapy 12 Focus on emotional and spiritual well-being. The directors of medical and sales asked to visit mom in rehab to evaluate whether they could accommodate her needs. They have a lab onsite so mom doesn’t have to go to the doctor for routine bloodwork. The community of residents has embraced mom. She has made genuine friends and feels secure. She has told us that she really likes it there.

Everyone there is so kind and the care is so individualized to make the needs of the resident. Our experience has been nothing but great and I would recommend this facility to anyone just so glad that we found it.

I think it was a good place. The staff seemed to sincerely care about my mom. I would recommend. I picked it because it wasn't huge, it was clean and we had a very positive feeling as we spoke to people that were staying at the facility.

The experience was the best. [name removed], the executive director at Brookdale, went above and beyond for my brother. Shortly after he moved to Brookdale his kidneys began shutting down again and he refused dialysis. [name removed] was by his side holding his hand with two other staff members praying in his room when he passed. She is an angel!

I would recommend Brookdale Germantown, although my experience was not the best. My mother required more care and according to their policy, they should not have admitted her. She had only been there for a week and they were telling me that she was going to have to go to another facility. They were nice but pretty adamant that my mom had to go to the facility that they found a room for her in. We didn't really have a pleasant experience, not terrible but not pleasant.

My mother went there for hospice so my experience was different than most. The other residents seemed happy. They took care of my mother during her end of life. I liked that it was smaller and family oriented. [name removed] was wonderful. Good communication and kind.

The marketing is impeccable for this location. The staff tells you what you want to hear during the tour. They appear to connect with your family member during the assessment visit. After moving in, you realize that it was all sales. Your loved one is essentially on their own with meals provided. If you have an older relative where they need scheduled meals and social interaction, it may work out for them. It's strictly assisted living; where they provide medication. Don't expect any feedback related to the medical issue that requires the medication unless they become a bother or burden. Engagement seems superficial and performative. You will often come to the building where the same residents sit in the lobby doing nothing and staring at Poplar Avenue. Housekeeping and baths are not done as scheduled although the days are posted on the apartment door. The floors and countertops are rarely cleaned if ever. The units are not maintained.

Response from Brookdale Germantown
January 13, 2023We take your comments seriously and are committed to providing quality care and services to our residents. We would welcome an opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have and hope you will contact our management team to discuss further.
What we really like about the Brookdale Germantown community are the staff members, they are just so caring and have taken such great care of our loved one. Based on the experience we have had so far we would recommend them to other families.
My loved one loves the food. I really liked the place and the people, prior to finding out about the cost. It's very nice, and family oriented. They clean the rooms once per week, and for the amount of money twice per week would keep it cleaner I would recommend this community to other families.

I really like this community. It's not perfect, of course. No place is. But it's absolutely the best place/right place for my parents. It feels more like a home and a family atmosphere than any other place that I toured. When I visit, staff and visitors are always present and out and about. I'm not only greeted by the staff, but also by the residents. Everyone knows each other here. The common areas are always clean. I feel like housekeeping of their apartment could improve. Communication is ok. They're good about communicating urgent things. The not so urgent, but still important things, I tend to hear from my dad on and not the staff. I will say, if I call or ask questions they're great about answering me. Just not as proactive to reach out about things. I'm not sure others who don't talk to their loved one's daily would be happy with the level of communication, but it works out for us. Overall, I love the staff, they're all great. I've never seen them be less than wonderful with anyone, residents or visitors. The food is very good. My only issue is how they handle special diets (diabetes, high blood pressure, etc). They don't give meal details to help residents understand what they're eating and if it's good for their diet needs. I'd really like to see that improve. They offer a good variety of activities and outings. Overall, I would recommend them to family and friends.

I toured Brookdale Germantown and I liked it, it was good. It was a nice place; they were sweet and knowledgeable, they answered all of my questions. We chose another community because Brookdale was a little more expensive.
Brookdale Germantown is very corporate. There's a lot of turnover because it is typical corporate looking out for the bottom line and cutting corners at every possibility. A lot of corners are cut and there are a lot things they don't provide that other places do, but there are pros and cons to every place. I do love the fact that the courtyard is in the middle, it's one of the main reasons we picked this place. The courtyard setup provides security and my loved one's room specifically is extremely nice in comparison to others we looked at. The amenities in their apartment are very nice compared to others too, but I just feel that it's very corporate, it doesn't have that family hospitably or warm and fuzzy feel. The residents there seem nice. In regards to the meals and dining: shortly after my loved one moved in they lost their head chef, and from what my loved one told me, the person who normally does accounting was filling in for the dining area. They still don't have the bistro area opened back up - whereas most residences have sandwiches, smoothies, or pick-up food. A lot of the time the sheets are not out to place an order, they have to ask for it, and when they do place an order they have to wait almost an hour for their food. They will say it'll be done at a certain time, but when they go up to get it it's not done, and by the time they get it, it's cold. So, that part has been struggling, and I think they have someone now, so hopefully it gets better. I'm unsure of why the bistro area is still closed, but I'm sure it's because of their lack of staffing and cutting corners. One of the reasons why my loved one justified moving here and spending the money was because they were looking forward to having their meals cooked for them, but they're still having to cook for themselves. My loved one has a walking aid and they try to enjoy walking. The courtyard itself is not maintained very well especially for, in my opinion, the elderly. They've had an ant issue that has gone on for months, where my loved one just ended up getting their own home-spray for insects and trying to combat it on their own - which they should not be having to do. And it's not just their apartment, it's several others. There are divots in the courtyard area - and I feel that it should be made safer for the those who use walkers or other walking aids. My loved one is not happy with the landscaping, as they're used to having their own meticulous yard that they can no longer maintain. So, that's something else that gets under their skin. Hopefully things will get better, now that we are on this side of Covid. I think all communities have their own issues and I'm unsure if it would be a better move to go elsewhere.

We decided on Brookdale Germantown because of the friendliness of the staff and the comfort level that my dad felt with the place when we toured it. We toured many places that were more higher end but they just did not have that homey feeling that Brookdale has. It was actually the first place we looked and he did not care to look at any others, we did anyways but none compared to the comforting feeling he felt here. I would absolutely recommend them to others.

It's a small facility, so you get more one-on-one care. The director and the staff are all very helpful. The common areas are very nice, and cleanliness is very good.

We had a very nice tour at Brookdale Germantown, but it was very expensive. And they also had a one-time initial fee to move in that was extremely expensive.

A Place for Mom has scored Brookdale Germantown 8.8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
