The staff were warm and caring. They kept the residents clean, the floors clean and it never had a foul odor. They were very good at communicating. The food was wonderful and the floor plan allowed the residents to see and smell the food cooking. I would highly recommend Avalon. The management lies, gaslights and a few other things. After a very, very, needlessly, completely unavoidable rocky start, my family member was not unhappy there. And, after all said and done, she was where she needed to be.

Response from Avalon Memory Care - St. Louis
August 2, 2024We’re sorry to hear about your concerns with management and the rocky start. We’re glad to know that, ultimately, your family member was in a place where she needed to be. Please reach out directly if you’d like to discuss your experience further.
The selling point was the ratio of resident to staff. Communication wasn't as much as I would have liked. The facility went through a significant staff turnover, and during that time, the cleanliness and laundry suffered. That situation eventually improved. [name removed] passed in March, so I'm no longer involved with Avalon.

Response from Avalon Memory Care - St. Louis
March 7, 2024Tina, thank you for sharing your experience. We will also share your kind words with the staff and agree that they are a great team. Our director is extremely organized and a solid communicator which we are so grateful for. Avalon builds our locations from the ground up and we absolutely designed it so that the residents could see and smell the meals being served daily. It was an honor to care for your father-in-law and support your family. We appreciate you and send all the best!
Avalon was a blessing to my father for the last 4 months of his life. They truly care about the residents who are more like family. They connected with my dad even in his advanced dementia. I thank God for Avalon.

We chose Avalon Memory Care because of the resident to staff ratio that they have. This particular facility atmosphere is very different than some of the other places. For those who need the more intense care, this would be a good place. I would recommend this facility to others looking for memory care and already have.

Sometimes they were shorthanded so they had to go with easy breakfasts like cold cereal and getting everyone up took a little longer but overall I was very happy with everything .

We picked this community because thought the ratio of caregivers to resiedents was good. A lot of things needs to improve. I am dissapointed and sad with the community.

I decided on Avalon Memory Care for my husband because I needed a facility in a short period of time. They had availability quickly and were able to accept him. I found that it was a quaint, small facility. They only had maybe 30 or 40 residents. It was very homey type of place. I was relived to have a place to have my husband. I would recommend them to other families.

Avalon Memory Care is more of an advanced nursing home on a smaller scale. A lot of their patients are farther progressed in the care that they need. At other memory care places we toured, there was more of a variety in the functioning level of their patients. At Avalon, a lot of patients are non-ambulatory and need a lot of 1:1 care, so it's less of a traditional memory care facility but instead more of a higher level nursing facility. If it wasn't for one staff member in particular, I think our experience would have been a lot less enjoyable. She was amazing - she texted us and FaceTimed us every day to talk to my dad. She ended up going on maternity leave, and within the next week my dad declined rapidly. They have some really good staff there, but they also have some staff who do not offer the services and value for the money. I think every place has their own staffing challenges, but because of how small this particular facility is, I don't think those challenges are managed very well. Also from a safety perspective with elopement concerns, how the facility was run during daytime business hours was very different than how it was run during evenings and weekends. We visited often at all different times and witnessed stark differences in shifts, with business hours running smoothly but deficits occurring on evenings and weekends. I definitely think the facility has potential if there were improvements in management.

My mother was in the later stages of dementia when we brought her to Avalon. She had suffered some neglect at her previous residence. When Avalon evaluated her in that environment, they expressed a desire to take her in so they could care for her. They were so caring - they showed up the next day with their personal vehicles to help move her. My mother’s health was up and down for the 8 months she lived at Avalon. The staff was always caring and helpful - no matter how mean my mom could be at the end. During one hospital stay, they showed up to help feed her. They truly care for their residents. The quality of the facility was worlds above any others that I had toured that were in our price range. Gorgeous accommodations and less residents. I wish I had moved my mom there sooner. But, I am happy that she spent the last 8 months of her life in such a wonderful place.

My father was diagnosed with Lewy bodies and Parkinson's. The team at Avalon Memory Care took him in after we were unable to safely support my father at home. [name removed] and team made the registration process very easy and cared well for my father during his stay. They even made life easier for us once my father passed. We feel blessed to have been able to house my father in such a caring environment during his final days on earth.

The staff members were very nice and friendly. They always knew where our loved one was at all times, they constantly watched over him to make sure he did not fall or hurt himself. They did an excellent job regarding that. However, our loved ones belongings at times went missing, so the attentiveness could be a little improved. The meals and dining service could of been more of a variety.

I was in love with this place until i went to see my mother an the only person i could trust to make sure my mother was well taken care of left the building due to POOR MANAGEMENT. this young lady made sure that my mother had everything she would need to live a enjoyable life there. she also made sure my mothers room well very clean so that she didn't get sick [name removed] was a great caregiver to my mother an my family wishes her the best. my mother really misses this young lady an it sading my soul to know that management in this building allows great workers to leave because they want to keep people who doesn't care about there jobs. i can say that she really cared about her job an my mother an i just wish they get management under control before they lose more great workers

I would recommend this community to anybody. I believe my loved one got really good care here. This isn't the fanciest places. There was only one bill a month I received for the same amount.

I am very happy with the care my sister receives at Avalon. The staff is always caring, patient and kind and attentive to her needs and wants. The facility is clean and neat. What I like the most is the low number of residents that allows more specialized care. She is always clean and has her hair washed and in clean clothes. Dementia is a nasty disease and I don’t wish it on anyone but if you have a loved one that needs this kind of specialized care, I would recommend Avalon Memory Care.

We cannot be more pleased with our decision to have our mother at the Avalon location on Butler Hill Rd. This is a family owned and operated company that has been operating for i think about 25 years. I can tell you that the care is very specialized and the staff truly cares. Prior to moving into Avalon, I had my mother in a facility owned by a large company and the staff was not treated correctly and it translated into the quality of care they provided. Avalon on the other hand is awesome!

My mom has been a resident here for 2 years. The staff is loving and attentive and I feel like they really know my mom and her preferences. I’ve always had good communication from the Director, which has given me incredible peace of mind during the COVID pandemic. The two RN’s that are on staff are excellent and very experienced.

I visited my mother in law around 6 months ago. My wife and I noticed how dirty the facility was, sticky floors, a urine stained couch missing a seat cushion in a hallway and trash on the floors. Asked staff to review state of MO inspection reports. By law, they need to show to anyone who asks. They refused and had no idea what I was talking about. Checked out her shared room. Had broken off wall toilet paper holder, no paper anywhere, 2 nom working lights. They then told me to leave or they would call PD.

A fairly new facility. Very attractive; the open kitchen is beautiful. (Oddly, during our visit at 11 a.m., no one was cooking or cleaning in it.) They seem to be short on front office staff -- the single staff member we saw was handling a conference call, so the director of nursing conducted our tour. The central area is set up with rows of recliners -- great for watching TV, but not good at all for interaction with anyone. Most residents were at the dining tables, getting manicures. Rooms are nicely sized; the bathrooms were over the top. This was the most expensive facility we've toured, but we couldn't come up with any reason to justify the expense.
