Nursing Homes

A nursing home facility provides residence to at least two seniors who are not related by blood or by marriage to the administrator. This type of facility provides its occupants with around-the-clock care by on-site nurses. These nurses offer care for those who cannot adequately take care of themselves because of their aging.

Nursing homes can be a familiar and comfortable living alternative for individuals 65 years or older, however nursing homes will commonly allow access to persons 55 and above which is uncommon for other senior care types. Many residents of nursing homes are individuals with behavioral issues. These can consist of a tendency to wander, verbal outbursts, or resisting assistance. Examples of amenities and servicesprovided at nursing homes can include adult day health care (which offers nursing and therapy) , room and board, adult day services , and senior centers. Nursing homes are required to provide nursing and related services, specialized rehabilitative services (treatment for mental illness or intellectual disability), emergency dental services, and routine personal hygiene items to residents. A significant amount of residents tend to be bachelors or widows with smaller social support groups, and almost half of nursing home residents are older than 85 years old.
