The Residence at St. Peter’s in River Edge, NJ
4.5

We went with The Senior Residence at Se. Peter Apostle because they offered a comparable level of service for almost $2000 less a month. The facility is smaller with only 20 rooms, it is a former convent so you have to be ok with a small room versus some other places that had large rooms. They have communal bathrooms and showers but there are 4 per hall so she has never had to wait. In terms of services, the other places we saw were not offering much more than this one and were more expensive. Here they offer 3 meals a day and access to coffee and tea throughout the day in a common room. It offers towel and bedsheet cleaning. But they do not have as many activities provided which is ok. The atmosphere is homey and she is comfortable here. I would absolutely recommend that others check it out. Staff are amazing and it doesn't matter who it is, they are super helpful to the residents. You can reach the director at anytime, she even gave me her phone number if we needed anything.

Westchester Center for Independent and Assisted in Yonkers, NY
4.0

My father in law is doing okay here at this community, he is still adjusting, but they are caring for him well. We do feel comfortable with his move to this community, it is a nice place. [Removed] is amazing. She was great to work with, she was very helpful, and understanding. The front desk receptionist isn't very pleasant, but the rest of the staff is very kind, and helpful. His room is well maintained when we visit, but the guest restroom could be better maintained. They have been very accommodating, and this is a community I would recommend.

The Bristal at East Northport
4.5

The staff at the East Northport Bristal is always kind. They always have a smile on their faces and are genuinely sweet and loving to my mom. The facility is ALWAYS spotless and beautiful to live in or visit. The only area I see occasional improvement for is the food. It is not always hot and more fresh veggies needed. The personal care and overall facility is excellent.

Complete guide to independent living

Port Washington, New York

Independent Living

If you or your loved one want the peace of mind of having your chores handled by professionalls while living your life at your own pace, you might want to consider independent living. Basic tasks such as meal preparation and housekeeping are handled by staff and a calendar of recreational and leisure activities is maintained, allowing residents an opportunity to use their time as they choose, free from daily responsibilities. Along with their daily needs being met, residents can enjoy the opportunity to live among peers, surrounded by others of similar ages and backgrounds. Typically comprised of a private living space and a full kitchen, these communities offer homes with many of the amenities of apartment life but with none of the hassle. Guests can be invited over and entertained, and there will be more time to spend with them with the basic maintenance of daily chores out of the way. While policies differ between locations, a number of residences allow pets as well. Nursing and health care services can always be arranged for with private care providers if desired. There are a variety of expenses and benefits to consider when deciding on an independent living community. It is important to learn if these services are included in the service plan: transportation, parking, utilities, internet access, laundry, housekeeping, cable TV, and initial assessment fee. The benefits and amenities that pertain to independent living include beauty salon & barber shop, laundry service, restaurant-style dining hall, game/TV room, transportation, golf course, security guards, and concierge services.
