I chose this community based on ratings, feedback from people in the business, and meeting the staff. My mother is in the memory care unit. The only negative I would say is that all of her toiletries are locked up and you need to have a staff member unlock the closet. Also, my mother likes to walk and cannot walk without a staff member which can be difficult to arrange.... Read more

I'm mostly happy with the facility. My mom enjoys the activities, & the staff are all very nice & friendly. The 2 negatives are the food has to be purchased from 1 supplier & the food is very bland & tasteless. The soups have little in them & my mom is used to the very chunky loaded with vegetables, meat & pasta & flavor that I cook. I've eaten there a couple times & even the fresh made Belgian waffles were a disappointment. Residents have spoken to chef in group meetings, but they said they can't make changes. The other negative is I've needed to get in to see my mom for emergencies & overnight desk person wasn't readily available to open locked doors. That is not acceptable. Overall tho, my mom is happy, making friends & enjoying the activities.

I think, like all facilities, there isn't enough staff especially in a memory unit when a lot of patients are in wheelchairs and need more assistance. Move in was easy, food is good. I am happy they bring in hospice to help with end of life care. I would recommend this facility to others.

Response from The Village at South Farms
March 29, 2024Hello, We are so glad to hear about your positive experience with The Village at South Farms. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review!
I am a Deacon from First Congregational Church Cromwell, CT acting in coordination with The Village at Souh Farms activities director to provide a monthly church service for residents at the facility. In terms of organizing the service and accommodations, the staff was very supportive in providing a lovely room for the services, internet access so that music could be brought into the service and putting the service on their activities schedule. I have continually heard from the participating residents just how pleased that this program was arranged for them. In visiting with the residents before and after services, I often hear about their other activities. I was shown pictures of their "Prom Night". The residents seem to enjoy the activities that are provided them. The facility is beautiful and seems to be well taken care of. The room provided for our services is very well suited for our purpose. It is an easy set up and a beautiful relaxing environment which suits our purpose.

I would highly recommend this facility. The staff are very caring and kind. The folks that will be interacting and caring for your loved ones are crucial to making the transition to a retirement home as painless as possible for all. I have dined with my Mother on several occasions and the food is very good. The waitress makes sure that my Mom has a little bowl of fruit at her table once a day because she likes this. A sweet personal touch.

All of the staff at The Village at South Farms has bee amazing! They are helpful and friendly as well as astute!
My sister has rapidly declined since being admitted. I was very concerned so had a meeting with staff to find out they have my sister on schizophrenia medication. Not dementia medicine, which she has. My only conclusion is that they are chemically restraining her? Because at one point she was in a zombie state. Since our meeting they have reduced schizophrenia medicine.

My loved one is a resident at The Village at South Farms. The staff is friendly. I think they should have more Aides on the Memory Care floors, dependent on resident needs. Housekeeping is fine, nothing spectacular. I would recommend this facility to friends and family.

What really sticks out to me at this facility are both the friendliness and pleasant surroundings. The staff are all friendly and always pleasant. Anyone around will help you if you have a question or are trying to find your way around. I like visiting here!

Our family had an in person tour and we thought it was a really nice tour experience
We really like the set up of the floor our loved one is on, it is not hospital like. Based on our experience so far we would recommend this community to other families.

This was a good community. My loved one wanted a different location.
My loved one didn't last long here for personal reasons. I don't feel it was the right fit for her. Their dementia care was different than what we expected - it was more like assisted living. She needed more attention and companionship, and they don't have the staff to accommodate that. For the time that she was there, she wasn't really involved in any activities because the rest of the patients there were not at her functioning level, so there was no one for her to relate to. I just don't feel they accommodated her well at all. They were very nice. But it just wasn't the place for my mother. I would recommend the place, but not for someone who was as high functioning as my mother.

I really liked this community but it was not really set up for memory care. It was nice for people who did not want to keep up a house or an apt but the adults are more proactive than my loved one. Everything is a la cart so the healthier you are the better but when there are services needed adding it all together is a lot higher in cost.
When dad died mom wanted to leave Florida and go back home to CT. I started calling assisted living facilities. The Village gave my husband and me the time and day we requested. When we got to the facility we were screened and then [name removed] came to greet us. [name removed] is very upbeat and obviously likes what she does and where she does it. I had a question sheet and [name removed] took her time answering all of them and giving us further information about South Farms. We were then given a tour of the facility. I was impressed, but this was our first stop of three. After touring the other facility I wrote an email to The Village with some comparisons I had. The Village got back to me immediately and addressed those concerns. Before making a decision I emailed The Village again with more questions. Again they got back to me very quickly with the answers. Mom has now decided to become a resident at South Farms and I continue to have questions and they continue to answer them in a very timely manner! [name removed] likes what she does and is enthusiastic about promoting South Farms but she has never been pushy. The Village continues to help us navigate mom’s journey to residency. I’m expecting The Village will continue to help us make a new home for mom and will make her feel welcome Everyone at South Farms that we met on our tour was pleasant and welcoming

The food at The Village community is very good, they have really good room sizes as well. One thing that stood out to us was how clean this community was and the decor they had.

By and large the staff is wonderful, and I give them a big hurrah. But there seems to be a problem with communication and coordination. For example, getting my mother ready for me to pick her up for doctor's appointments has been problematic. There seems to be no set procedure, or if there is, no one seems to know what it is. Telling the personal care aids did not work (the information didn't get passed along to the whoever was on duty the day of the appointment). Telling the nurses didn't work (although the nurses said the procedure was supposed to be to inform them about the appointment). Telling the person on duty at the front desk sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Sometimes I arrive on the day of the appointment and my mother is on a bus trip or at an activity, sometimes she is asleep, only once or twice was she dressed and ready.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score.
