If you are looking for a memory care unit for a loved one, do not go to Teal Shores. Our parents have been there 2 years, in memory care and the level of care, cleanliness and service has decreased dramatically. We are now looking at other options. When we moved them in we were told they would be showered 2X per week, there would be memory care activities and that the small memory care unit was being remodeled soon. None of this is happening. In addition the meals are not appropriate for people in their 90s. Large, dry chunks of beef and pork served uncut and many times with no utensils given on the trays, sandwiches served whole on hard, stale buns weeks - choking hazards for the elderly, They are not being showered or clean clothes put on, the unit and rooms are not clean. We have complained to the Executive Director and others numerous times, always to be told they would rectify it or are working on it and yet it doesn't change. The only positive is the nursing staff (RNs and LPNs)

My sister was a Terova for a year and a half before I finally couldn’t take any more and I moved her. She has celiac disease and must have gluten free food which they knew about but yet continue to give it to her and she continue to be sick. Her room was seldom clean and was filled with feces on the bathroom floor. The staff was poor. One caregiver thought it was funny to jump on her bed. When I finally moved her out, it took three months to get the refund I was due, and I only got it because I threaten them with a lawyer.

I counted on Terova's team to care for my Mom when I couldn't be there. Here are the facts: My Mom went from 144 to 75 pounds in less than 9 months by Terova not helping to feed her. One example: I found a full bagel with lox sitting on her table - she was a choke hazard, needed her food cut up or soft and assistance with eating. That did not happen. My Mom needed help transferring and toileting. We found my Mom sitting in the dark, in a pool of urine, her call button sitting across the room. I will save you from other bitter details. When this was all found, we had her removed from Terova, unfortunately too late. Being short staffed and stressed out is no excuse for this type of treatment. Your residents are people - someone's Mom, Grandma, Wife. I feel that my Mom would still be here if she had been correctly and thoughtfully cared for. It looks like after this was checked into, maybe things have changed. I hope so, for the sake of those left in their care. My Mom was not that lucky.

They were all super nice when they toured, took our deposit and when we were considering placement. However, when we expressed reservation and concern, they stopped talking to us, making me wonder if they are just about making a buck. Very unprofessional, uncaring and don't seem to truly care about the client. Giant bummer since they look nice (grounds, building, rooms etc.) but when one scratches under the surface ([name removed] in particular was very unprofessional), I can't help but think that they are more about being a profitable business than about caring for their community.

Understanding that this is post covid, we have been more than patient with the issues they are having but it has been going way too long without any improvement. They have been having some problems with the food services. There have been times where residents are waiting an hour to get served and the food that comes out is not good quality or fresh. It is a beautiful facility and my dad is very happy with his room. The residents here do need a lot more care, he feels like it is hard to make friends or relate to other residents. It would be a better facility for individuals who need more care rather than independent living.

October 30, 2021Ann, Thank you for your feedback. I am very sorry to hear that we have not lived up to your father’s expectations in our culinary department. While it may feel as though Covid is behind us, we continue to face challenges resulting from the pandemic. As a healthcare community, Terova is regulated by CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services), the CDC and our local health department. As a result of the regulatory requirements, we have implemented processes to ensure all of our residents remain safe. This includes modifying our dining services, where we have opened all four dining rooms to provide proper social distancing and varied service times to correlate with those dining rooms. Terova offers made-to-order breakfast, fresh options at lunch and a wholesome dinner program. We encourage our residents to give us feedback and created the Resident Culinary Council (and we are pleased that your father participated), to provide a feedback channel from our residents. Every resident takes a different amount of time to acclimate to a new community. I am confident that in time your father will connect with our independent residents that include local artists, physicians, and a wide variety of engaged and active seniors. With the amazing assortment of activities, there are many opportunities to make new friends. Your father also attended our Welcoming Committee meeting that was attended by many of our active residents. We will continue to encourage your father to join activities. Terova is fortunate to be able to offer 24-hour nursing and a continuum of care not normally found in assisted living. Our nurses have been integral in the success and safety of our residents, and we provide a wide spectrum of care levels and needs within our community. The Terova leadership team is committed to creating a high quality of life for our residents. We will continue to work diligently to ensure that your father is happy with our food, our service and the many activities that Terova offers. Adrianne Stupar MBA, LPN Executive Director
The staff members here have been very accommodating and helpful in getting my Mother situated. The building is on the newer side and it seems to be well maintained. They do offer a various amount of activities including religious services, concerts, cooking, and crafts. However there have been a few minor things that they haven’t done like they were supposed to give my mom a tour of the facility and that hasn’t happened yet. I would recommend this community to other families.

Where do I start? Perhaps bullets would be most efficient: 1) Resident Advisor was invested in building a relationship with me and my siblings, from the initial conversation through the follow-up conversations, all the way to ensuring that she was on-site the day that we moved my Dad in! 2) The entire staff was always smiling and very welcoming; I got the impression that people loved their jobs. 3) My Dad's place was immaculate. I should also point out that they had a one-bedroom apartment for me to use when moving my Dad in, and it was also more than immaculate. 4) I like the layout, with separate entrances depending upon the type of care needed. My Dad could really feel like he had simply moved to another apartment, not a care facility. 5) I love that there are all types of activities for my Dad: singing, dining, book clubs...and I love that there is an electronic menu of daily activities 'cause how would he remember each day? It really is like staying at a nice hotel. 6) I love the location. Not only is it convenient for my family to visit, but it is really nice when we want to take my Dad out for grocery shopping, or for a walk...everything is within a few blocks!

A Place for Mom has scored Teal Shores 1.3 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
