Living far from the facility, I really liked the communication from the staff. My dad was not able the express himself well in the end and the staff was great with updates and keeping us aware of anything we could provide to make his days nicer. My dad was previously at another memory care facility in the area, where surprisingly they treated all the unfortunate quirky of this conditions as impositions and hassles, whereas Sunrise of Hermosa was very kind, professional and understanding. It was such a treasure to have found a place that really knows how to care for their residents! The only negative had nothing to do with the care, which was amazing. The accounting staff is not very good. It was difficult to actually speak with the personal. More than a week of daily voice messages were never returned. This happened several times. Finally had to resort to speaking with the director on multiple occasions. The billing was easy if nothing changed, but when refunds were due, due to extended hospital stays, it took MONTHS, and the assistance of my accountant to get the issues resolved and the appropriate credit applied to the account, only to have the same scenario happen a few weeks later. The fact that the corporation accounting happens off site and depends on timely and accurate info from the individual facility definitely complicated the process. The director was very accessible, but the system had flaws and required the payee to catch the over billing, which happened often.... Read more

Response from Sunrise of Hermosa Beach
October 20, 2023Hi Dennis! Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise of Hermosa Beach. We appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review!
Recently widowed, my mother moved to Sunrise a few months ago. Because this was her first move without my father, we were unsure how she would acclimate to her new home. Was I wrong to worry! It took her no time at all to feel at home, safe and welcomed by the tremendous staff at Sunrise. Everyone from reception, the medical care team, social directors and kitchen staff took her in and got to know her. They are beyond warm, loving and attentive to every single resident while having boundless energy and patience to match. As someone who travels a lot, I am extremely grateful to know my mother is in good hands when I am not there. There are so many activities for her to partake in each day, it's a relief to see her engaged and having fun. After shopping around other facilities, I am so happy we made the move to Sunrise. It is no surprise U.S. News and World Reports ranked it as one of the best senior living facilities in the U.S.

Sunrise Senior Living Hermosa Beach is a top notch facility. There is an aura of peace, safety, and unwavering support from the staff who respects their residents and always extends themselves to provide the highest quality of care 24/7, seven days a week. They fulfill their mission statement and bring peace of mind to us, knowing our loved one is in excellent care.

Activities are fantastic at sunrise in Hermosa. The problem is with the dining room. Food that is over cooked and dried out. People always checking clean glasses for pulp left or lipstick that was not cleaned off of the glass. It's a shame that such a nice facility has most people looking at coffee cups, water glasses and silverware before use. The menu is packed with several items that are not available. As an example, the Menu almost always has fresh baked cookies as a dessert option. Rarely are they available. It's a wise decision to ask staff before you order if the food is tender. Chicken might have been cooked for an extra 20-35 minutes and is bone dry. Brisket cuts or pork cuts can be almost too tough to chew. I encourage anyone looking to reserve a room in any facility to ask to be seated in the dining room for a random, unscheduled meal to be an observer. How are the residents treated? Do residents inspect all dishes for cleanliness?

Response from Sunrise of Hermosa Beach
October 20, 2023We are sorry to hear about the negative experience you had at Sunrise of Hermosa Beach. For over 40 years, Sunrise Senior Living has taken great pride in serving thousands of residents and families during such a critical time in their lives. We would like to learn more about your experience and how we can correct the issue. Please contact us at info@sunriseseniorliving.com. Thank you! – The Sunrise Team
Most Senior Living companies seem to offer or promise the same or similar facilities and services. What makes a facility a good home are the people that staff and care for our loved ones. Sunrise of Hermosa Beach is the best. Positive attitudes with a genuine concern for the residents stands out here. To name just a few of the staff stars [names removed], all superb. They take the initiative to reach out to help and comfort their residents and treat them like a loving family should. And, by the way, the facilities, activities and services Are top notch as well.

The employees at Sunrise are very special people! I have found that everyone working there has a great sense of caring for each and every resident. There many and varied activities to keep people occupied and busy. There is also plenty of musical entertainment provided several times a week. The people at the concierge desk are always friendly and helpful. Susan, Marco and Amy go out of their way to help the residents. The help staff is fabulous. The kitchen staff fantastic. Every employee knows every name of every resident. The building and grounds are always spotless. It's a great place to live and the best care possible.

The facility is very warm and comfortable. I did not expect so many residents who suffer with dementia and other mental problems. I find it very hard to find a resident to carry on a conversation. I would be very lost without the staff- engaging in conversations.

Sunrise of Hermosa Beach has been an excellent fix for my dad. My dad has advanced vascular dementia and Sunrise has been so kind and helpful to him, unlike his previous placement. We would definitely recommend this community to other families based on the experience we have had so far.

Overall, it's a great community. The rooms are nice. The staff seems very eager to help. It's a great location. On the con side, it's very expensive. They seem understaffed, and the staff seems a little overwhelmed. There has been a fair amount of leadership turnover recently, which isn't great. The whole dining room politics has been very challenging for my loved one, and I know she's not the only one struggling with that. But overall, it's a really nice place.

Response from Sunrise of Hermosa Beach
August 24, 2022Hi EL, Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise of Hermosa Beach and the dedicated care givers and team members. Our residents are part of the Sunrise family and we take enormous pride in having the privilege to take care of them.
If you can afford it and you like the location you can't wrong with Sunrise of Hermosa Beach. The staff here is sensational. I've never met so many happy, caring, and friendly people in every department. They are having staff changes in the dining room. Sometimes it takes way too long for the residents to get their food, and the food doesn't arrive freshly hot. I believe the community could use more seats in the dining room to accommodate the residents who want to eat in the dining room.

Even when covid was at worst tried their best to keep everyone safe and I feel the community is well run. I feel like after the pandemic is over I would give this community a 5. my loved one really liked this community and I would recommend this community to others based on my experience.
The staff seems to be long term, there is not high turnover rates. They are very attentive and when we call they do a great job with communication. They have a lovely selection of activities, it is expensive but you do get what you pay for, however they do charge a lot for the medication management. Our biggest issue we have is not with the facility itself but with its billing department, they are very hard to deal with, we have had several disputes and complications.

I have no complaints about the tour I had taken at this community for my loved one. The staff where on time to our appointment and made sure to answer any questions I had for them in detail. It thought they did a nice job with the presentation and everything was very clean. It was just not the right location for us in the end decision.

I was happy with this community and the tour that I received from the staff was very helpful. The environment was clean and maintained. They offer good meals and the list of activities would have been helpful for my mom .I would recommend that other family tour this community for the care of a loved one.

A Place for Mom has scored Sunrise of Hermosa Beach 9.6 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
