I think they generally have a very good facility for senior living, but I would appreciate a more proactive approach from their staff. They really are very warm to my mom and understand her particular needs, especially with anxiety. I always know she's safe and they are very responsive.

Response from Sunrise of Alexandria
May 28, 2024Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise of Alexandria and the dedicated care givers and team members. Our residents are part of the Sunrise family and we take enormous pride in having the privilege to take care of them.
There are many things I do love about Sunrise, which is why we chose it for my Mom. Mainly, they seem to treat their residents like family, which is so critically important. They also provide a very nice level of care. Further, they've done a great job of communicating with me if anything happens to my mom (a fall, etc). Where I have struggled is that they simply weren't ready when my mom moved in, depsite signing the paperwork 45 days in advance and paying for our room a good full month in advance (the move-in delays were on our end, but that doesn't impact the fact that they should have been ready for her on Day One). When I say "ready" I'm talking about issues with the room - workorders of things that needed to be repaired that I had flagged a good month prior. They also didn't seem to have the staff fully ready to embrace her with a well-developed care plan, routine, etc. That said, they did catch up after about 2 weeks and things have been great since then. One thing I do struggle with is the fact that they don't provide any help in getting your loved ones to any specialist doctors (eye docs, mammograms, etc). I expected they could at least help make the appointments and line up wheelchair transport, and help identify transport companies that accept Medicare. Seems like that's not a service they provide, but then again, perhaps other Assisted Living places don't either (?) not sure. One thing that is discouraging is the month after we moved in, the rates have already increased. We were told this happens, but that it most likely wouldn't happen to us since we had just moved in one month prior. Then again, rate increases seem to be the norm in the industry overall. Overall, though, I don't want to overlook the fact that they treat my mom very well and I have observed them treating the other residents very well too. Also, I have always felt welcomed when I walk in, and I visit often.

This facility is good for assisted living, but I wouldn't recommend memory care. It's very clean and always smells nice. The food was good quality and had a good variety. The financial structure is confusing, they use a daily rate versus a monthly rate. Some of the care givers could have been more empathetic. Some of them weren't as attentive as I would have liked. Others were very good. They just seemed to be overworked. The care supervisor and wellness supervisor were both very helpful. It wasn't horrible here, it was ok. Ultimately, we wanted a smaller place. Memory care needs more one on one care and less residents to really get the care they need. I would recommend them for assisted living but not memory care.

September 22, 2022Hi Customer, Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise of Alexandria and the dedicated care givers and team members. Our residents are part of the Sunrise family and we take enormous pride in having the privilege to take care of them.
Be active and present in your family member's care. I observed that the residents whose family was not present tended to be left alone quite a bit. Issues seemed not to stem from lack of management, but because the staff were spread very thin. There were some staff who tried to do their best. And then there were some who perhaps should have been let go for lack of attention and courteousness but could not be let go because the facility was so short-staffed. We found one of the attendants asleep in our loved one's chair. There were numerous instances of his clothes going missing. He came in with three coats and left with one. They told us they looked for the missing items, but they never did come up with them. The way that they treated our family was inconsistent. They were friendly to some of us and not to others. Again, there was variation depending on the workers. Some were very friendly and helpful and would go the extra mile to assist. And then there were some that were there to do just the bare minimum. I understand that issues with staffing are a challenge nationwide currently, be we were paying for a service we feel we did not receive.

The location worked out best for the residents daughter, there were no alarms about Sunrise that made us feel like we needed to go tour other communities. The resident has settled in nicely and now feels at home. Our friend seems to be happy with the meals. we have heard no complaints, but we do not have experience ourselves. We have seen an activities schedule but since our friend does not take advantage of the activities we do not really know if they are actually happening or not. The value for money is good we do not find that to be alarming. We have had a few issues but anytime we bring them to the staff attention they are worked on so things are going quite well so far and we would recommend Sunrise of Alexandria to other families

We really enjoyed our tour with Sunrise. The staff were all great. The only reason we did not go with this facility was because the floor plan was not going to work out for my loved one.
Our experience is based on the memory care section of the facility, we completely understand there is a staffing shortage in healthcare nationwide and we really are trying to being sensitive to that .However, we are experiencing some challenges like getting our monthly fees increased with no real clarification as to why. Some of the staff are wonderful, but at times the communication could be lacking with other staff members. The disease at times makes our loved one "difficult" and we just aren't sure if our loved one is getting the most adequate care. We are not knowledgeable in this area at all, but sometimes it seems like they just medicate the residents instead of working through the problem and coming up with a solution.

Our tour at Sunrise of Alexandria was very good. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. They explained everything and were on top of their game. They were just a little too far away, and a little out of our price range.
The staff there are excellent. My loved one does not like the meals I do feel like they could be improved. They do have some activities and I feel like they could do more. I know that covid has restricted this some but I still do feel that there could be more done. It is also a little pricey.

My mother is in memory care. The staff are nice to her, and take care of her well. They have family activities that are great and done well. The food is quality and there are a few options if the resident does not care for what the menu offers.

I would tell others that is a very nice loving community. It is clean and the staff take care of residents well. The best part is the great staff. I would like to see the price be a little less compared to right now.

My tour of this community was a good one. This is a lovely community with kind people. The community from what I saw looked nice, everything appeared to be well-kept. Everyone was very kind, and friendly. My questions were answered, and the staff was pleasant. Unfortunately this was not the right match for my wife, and her needs. However my tour was a good one overall.

Sunrise was looked like a nice community and had they been willing to work with me on the pricing for my mothers 4-day respite stay I would have considered them. I did not feel that paying for 2 weeks instead of 4 days was worth it.

We toured this community. The staff was able to answer my questions. They had a nice menu and they had a good variety of good meals. They had some activities, but not a lot. The community was clean and maintained. This was nice community and families might consider a tour for care.

A Place for Mom has scored Sunrise of Alexandria 7.9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
