I toured St Paul's some time in the past and found it old and dark and I knew I wouldn't live there. I tagged along with my sister and brother-in-law. I was amazed at the transformation of St Paul's. Everything was updated, clean and bright. We decided this was the place for us. We have been here 3 or 4 months and have not found anything to complain about. Food is a subject that is always a topic for negative discussion. Nothing came out at the meetings. We keep in mind the way the market is now. May be on the menu but not on the truck. We are just getting into the activities and looking forward to more We are pleased with our decision.... Read more

Our Mother with dementia was there twice. Both times she fell and required an ambulance to take her to the hospital with injuries. The first time, her granddaughter found her in the bathroom floor, upon finding her she called the nurses station and it took 20 additional minutes for someone to show up and finally decide to call an ambulance. Today, she was found in another patient’s room laying on the bathroom floor with a head injury, again, no idea how long she had been there. Ambulance called again, we were notified that she had been taken but no one escorted her as a dementia patient. While inquiring with the nurses what had happened, we were informed she didn’t really belong in that facility. They do not handle the dementia patients and she should be on a different floor. Please use caution! If I could give it a zero I would have. Please note: no shower for 5 days.

[Name removed], the Director, has lots of energy. She introduced my mom to everyone. They all know her by name. She has mild dementia and they have been great with her. They access them for PT and OT right there. The housekeeping is good, she doesn't need much. Move in was easy. The apartments on the 4th floor are brand new. Meals could use more variety. I would love to see more activities. We would highly recommend St Pauls to others.

Everyone is so friendly and the facility is kept clean. I don’t ever feel alone. I use to color by myself and now they hold an activity called “coloring with friends”, which I enjoy going to! The TV service could be better.

This is an update to my previous review. Thankfully my brother lives in Belleville and was able to go to admin at St. Paul's to resolve the rent spike. My mom will be able to stay at her current rent for a year and if the rent does increase my brother was told it would only be 2-3% raise and not 27%. [name removed] at St. Paul's called me today to talk through the events and stated the rent increase was a "mistake". I don't really believe that and think if my brother wasn't there to advocate for my mom a rent increase would have happened. My mom tells me that there are still issues with her HVAC and that outlets in her apartment from cable (they've now switched all residents to Dish) and old phone lines are still holes in the wall without the proper plastic outlet covers. Still very low water pressure. The staff in the kitchen are very friendly to my mom and [name removed] is putting together a new "sit and fit" class that my mom loves. I hope she can safely stay there for many years.

My mother moved in less than 3 months ago and was hit with an $[removed] rent increase! The letter informing her of this has an illegable signature and a typed word, "Administrator". This is extremely unprofessional. Much of the staff is new and very young in their first "real job". It feels like a lot of them are working blind and being manipulated by unseen higher ups that want more money. Maintenance staff are told not to talk to residents, but problems with HVAC, poor water pressure, non working outlets and cable outlets without covers remain. Washing machines were installed incorrectly. Food is so so. I'm truly sad for my mom and fear that contracts are month to month and another rent increase could come at any time.

I enjoy my neighbors and the courtesy transportation that they offer. The apartments make it feel like home. They put together a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner for the residents every year and the experience is pleasant. Family members enjoy the food and pianist. You won’t regret your time here!

Good place - people are friendly and the team work well together. Other then the poor parking for handicap the amenities are great. You don’t have to do anything everything is done for you. I’m happy with my experience so far.

I was a resident at St Pauls Senior Community. Everything but the food was excellent at this facility. The food was not edible most of the time. I was forced to cook my own meals. I brought it to the attention of the new ownership. They did a lot of talking and a lot of promising, but nothing really happened. The entire kitchen staff needed to be replaced, along with the kitchen management. Lots of the other residents wouldn't talk about it for fear of being asked to leave and they had nowhere else to go.

Response from St Pauls Senior Community
July 20, 2023Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review. Our residents are our top priority, and we are so pleased you've had a great experience. Thanks again!
St. Paul was in the midst of a renovation due to flood or damage from a water main break. It didn't seem like there many activities and felt a tiny bit more institutional. St Pauls was adequate, but I think it really was the state of the building. Nothing to really see...that I remember.
Response from St Pauls Senior Community
May 26, 2023We sincerely apologize that your experience did not meet your expectations or our standards. Someone from our team will reach out to you shortly to discuss ways we can make things right for you.
I liked St Pauls. I thought it was very nice, but it was too expensive.
St. Paul's is a small, friendly community with a responsive and friendly staff. The food needs improvement though. They just need to find kitchen staff who can cook. In my view, most of what they serve is overcooked, and they use too much gravy and sauce to cover mistakes. The big deal with the food is they don't really address any dietary needs or restrictions. So if you need that, St. Paul's is not the place for you. The serving staff in the dining room is fine. But the cooking staff needs to be replaced. I think the cost is affordable, and the rent includes a basic cable/TV service. The apartment is excellent. I use a mobility scooter 100% of the time, and I'm working with the staff now to improve accessibility in the shower, but otherwise the apartment is excellent. Like most businesses right now, they're in a post-Covid recovery period. Therefore they're not as good as they were when I was here last. But with senior living communities, the makeup of the community defines itself. Right now they're at about 50% capacity in Independent Living. As occupancy rises and gets more back to normal, I know things will continue to improve. And the staff is committed to the excellence you pay for. They're helpful people and want to do their jobs. The kitchen manager right now is just in over his head and doesn't know how to fix it. I think St. Paul's is a good, small community with a lot of potential for the future. The location in Belleville is great. While St. Paul's itself has minimal transportation, there is a wheelchair accessible transportation system supported and operated by the local community college, and for $4 a trip, they'll take you anywhere in the community, which was a huge draw for me. That transportation system is as good as I've seen anywhere, including in Chicago. So if you like to get out and do things, the transportation is affordable and it's there.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
