Great staff, bright & inviting

The n/a's are for what I am not directly involved with at the community. However, the director [name removed] is very easy to work with and he is also very approachable. Based on the experience we have had so far with Altenheim St. Louis, we would of course recommend this community to other families!!!!!

Unique and Responsive and Very Flexible to Requests

This is a really nice community. It is not real fancy like Sunrise but we liked that it felt unique and not corporate at all. The staff are very responsive to our questions, concerns, and requests. They were able to speak to the doctor and be able to allow my loved one a better wheelchair next day. There is a good variety of options for meals for the residents. It is not fancy, and it is more homecooked meals. The desserts are what my loved one really enjoys and they are good. They encourage the family to come to visit their loved ones. They even have apartments for the family to visit overnight with no charge. There is no charge to eat in the dining room with our loved one. The community looks out over the Mississippi Bluffs, and it is beautiful.

We Love The Altenheim

Altenheim St. Louis is marvelous. We love it here. It's super peaceful. It's a welcoming community. I feel like my loved one is getting the care that she needs. It's a great facility. They're experiencing the usual staffing problems everybody is having right now, but that's not their fault. And the staff they do have there are very good.

Good Community, Nice Staff

This is a nice small community, and all the staff know all of the residents. There is a lot of turnover of nursing staff due to the pandemic, and this has caused some inconsistency in care. The oven system had not been working, so all the food was either toasted or microwaved for the residents. I'm not sure how long the oven was not functioning. The food has seemed subpar for me for my loved one.

The Altenheim family review

The employees of Altenheim are always friendly and have been great to work with. Requests made have been honored or thoroughly explained as to why they cannot be. For example, our Dad is a loner and not interested in activities. While they continue to encourage him to be more engaged, the team has adapted to meet him on his terms by just sitting and chatting with him. While the messaging at the front desk has been inconsistent and confusing, I've contributed that to the Administator trying to incorporate Covid related changes as quickly as possible.

My review of Altenheim

My loved one was on a catheter for a long time. He got off of it and I left town for a while. No one ever checked on him and he ended up being full of water and his legs were very swollen. Things were good at the facility as long as I was checking on him every day, but if not, they were not doing their job. I would not recommend to others looking.

Wonderful care! Like a family. Very personal care. Facility always clean and beautiful. When problems arise. staff listens and makes adjustments. Only need is slight improvement to staff communication on transfer of care from person-to-person or shift changes.

Not good for elderly who are unable to move independently.

Interesting that none of the reviews show dates... My mother-in-law lived here for five years beginning in 2014. The facility was wonderful and she was well cared for until about the last year. After suddenly being sent to the ER three weeks ago with a high fever and shallow breathing, it was determined she had less than 25% cardiac output. She was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and placed in hospice care within 8 days of being in the hospital. She never had heart issues before or any reports of CHF despite the fact that she was being under the care of the resident physician at Altenheim. Upon her return to Altenheim with hospice directions, it became clear that the facility was not prepared to handle her level of care. Due to this, her daughter and I spent many hours with her in her room at all hours and experienced incompetence at frightening levels. Previously, she was able to come down to the first floor to visit with us... The well-maintained part of the facility that is truly beautiful. But the reality is that bathroom and kitchen floors were mopped with some sort of oily substance resulting in slip and falls (mine in particular). We witnessed a potential elopement from the property of a resident with a walker wandering down the sidewalk of the main street out front. We would come in to find my MIL covered in food and spilled coffee from being left alone to feed herself in bed despite our and her hospice nurse's repeated directions otherwise. My MIL never received consistent care in those two weeks due to lack of communication among staff - some of whom did not even know what hospice meant as I learned when a staff member who, upon being told my MIL went to a hospice house, asked me if she was coming back to Altenheim. And the list goes on and on. The final insult was when the bed at a hospice house became available for my MIL and the administration bright my SIL to a room and yelled at her for 15 minutes. She was accused of fraud and not communicating with the staff about her concerns. She was told she would be sued for not giving 30 days notice (for a hospice move!?!?). She was told she owed a bunch of money and never paid the bill on time. All of this to a woman who is coping with the fact that her mother is about to die. And none of it is true. There are some caring people who work at Altenheim - and I applaud them for doing everything they can. But the administration here should be ashamed of themselves for their lack of leadership.

It was Nice

This property was completely different than where my dad is now. It is a much larger place. It appeared to be staffed enough for a number of residents there and they seemed friendly and helpful. The only issues that we came across are that they had no current openings and if they did they didn't accept patients on Medicaid for the memory care wing.

A horrible experience!

I made an appointment with them to go on a tour and when I got there, I sat for bout 20 minutes because the person that was taking me on the tour was not there. Finally, the chef came out and took me on the tour! I saw the director walk by and they did not apologize or even acknowledge me. It was a totally negative experience and I even filled out a card for them to contact me and they did not. They did not even follow up after the tour!

Very loving and attentive care

My mother moved here recently and things were going well until two weeks ago.My mother fractured her shoulder and was severely dehydrated. The staff at Bavaria has been so good with her while she is rehabilitating. I'm in love with a few members of the staff. They are so sweet and talk to my mother like she can understand. When she calls for them they are always prompt and helpful. The place is wonderful and is a very nice environment. I would recommend this community and already have.

The community faces the Mississippi.

The staff are very nice and complimentary. They check on mom who currently lives in assisted living. They monitor her medications. The food is very good and they have nice meals. Her room is comfortable. They offer activities constantly and the community is clean. They accept medicaid after two years of self pay. This community is a little pricey and I would recommend it.

Excellent Memory Care !!

The staff has been very patient with my loved one and has helped her adjust wonderfully with the move into the memory care unit. They make sure her doctor appointments are organized and that she has transportation. The nurses have been excellent with open communication and keeping in contact with the family. I would highly recommend this community to anyone in need of a memory care facility.
