Response from Orchard at Athens
July 31, 2024Thank you for your kind words. We hope your loved one is participating in a grand reunion with those that have gone before them.
My loved one is currently a resident at Orchard at Athens. The staffing is very mixed. There is lots of turnover and a management team that seems very under prepared. There is no leadership and the staff who do the work have low morale.

If the resident really needs care, be prepared to hire a care giver to augment the care provided by Orchard.

It's a perfect community for our Mom. All staff...caregivers, med techs, dining, administrative...have always been very attentive and responsive. We know she is receiving the care she needs and she has actually gotten stronger this past year. We love the facility and available activities. Additional: Could not be more thankful for A Place for Mom. You helped us find the perfect community and were there every step of the way.

What we like the most about the Orchard at Athens are they care givers. The care givers there are very good. The community itself is nice and the only area for improvement is in the resident engagement - they could use more activities for them.

Response from Orchard at Athens
August 17, 2023Thank you for your positive feedback. We are always looking to improve enrichment for our residents who call Orchard home.
Do not move your loved ones into this facility. They do not take care of their residents. It was so bad we had to move my mother out of memory care and it caused a major decline in her disease. There are so many more options, but I wish I had never moved my mom into the orchard. A few examples- they were supposed to check on her every 2 hours for seizures they didn’t check on her 1 time the whole night, she fell asleep in another residents room and it room hours for them to even realize she wasn’t in her bed, but another resident was in her bed and the worst of all is my mom fell asleep on the hard, tile floor in the common area- the orchard caregiver response was “she is fine to sleep there.” Awful place with terrible care.

Response from Orchard at Athens
March 3, 2023Assisted Living Communities were developed to provide our nation’s elderly with an alternative choice to nursing homes, placing a priority on quality of life while offering personal care services. While our society has embraced the ALC concept, each Resident, and his or her family should understand that our ALC Residential setting offers both rewards and risks: our high quality-of-life is accompanied by inherent risks which are beyond our control, since we emphasize our Residents’ freedom of movement, autonomy and privacy. In our community Residents are allowed freedom of movement. Residents, especially those who are cognitively impaired, occasionally wander into a situation, either inside or outside the building. All should understand that this is possible since we do not provide continuous individual monitoring of our Residents. For those Residents who begin to show signs of wandering, we will work with you and the Resident’s physician to develop the appropriate care and setting needed, but we will not guarantee additional monitoring or aid. Realizing the ultimate decision to transfer your loved one to a higher needs facility, lies with you and the family. Some residents living with dementia sometimes will find comfort in unconventional ways, such as laying on a floor. Our team is trained to work with those residents to find more appropriate accommodations however if the teams’ efforts are turned down by a resident the team will then assess the situation. The team will determine if the resident laying on the floor presents any danger to the resident and if further coaxing the resident to move will create more distress for that resident than comfort. Orchard prides itself with being transparent and working with residents and families to act in the best interest of the resident. Sometimes that leads to hard conversations where we will suggest parting ways is the best possible outcome. We wish you and your family the best. It was a pleasure to care for your loved one for the past 3 years.
The interaction with the staff is great. They offer a fair amount of activities. We picked this community because, it felt like a good fit for my loved one. Everyone is always super nice and helpful. My loved one is happy. I would recommend to other families. A Place for Mom was phenomenal, I appreciate everything that you do.

Orchard at Athens is an awesome facility. I really wish that we had put my dad here. It is pretty expensive, but rightfully so. They had a lot of things offered that many other facilities did not have. The place is always full because of their good reputation. They did have a really good memory care unit and offered lifts as well. They had mentioned possibly having dad in memory care during the tour and that just completely turned him off and freaked him out - which is ultimately why we did not choose them.
I think, as with any healthcare service, it's important for a person to advocate for themselves and their family members. All areas of healthcare are struggling with staffing issues right now, so I think it's important to look at all of these types of organizations with a bit of grace in hand. For our family in particular, it's very close to where we live, so it's very convenient. The staff have been very responsive to us with all the twists and turns that have occurred during our loved one's stay. They've sat down with us to actively come up with solutions and have been quite responsive. Wherever you choose, I would just recommend acting on placing a loved one before you think you need to.

All the help is very good at to everyone. They are all kind. Things are not always done on time, but for the most part everyone is very helpful. When my husband was a live, I received very good help with him. There are enough activities to keep us busy. I enjoy living here very much.
