In Lexington, Kentucky, Meadowthorpe Assisted Living offers unique cottage-style assisted living, memory care, and respite care. Lexington is best known for horse racing and bourbon, and this mid-size city is a haven of family-friendly charm and bluegrass hills. Each of the five cottages is near multiple green parks and convenient shopping areas. Every cottage has eight apartments, and the cottages create their own congenial community atmosphere within their social “pods.” This system is an effective tool to keep residents socially engaged while protecting them from transmittable viruses.
A focus on the details makes this community special. Each apartment has a clean, upscale interior and is outfitted with all-new modern appliances. Spacious outdoor patios are popular spots for playing card games, bird watching, or reading the news. The facility is outfitted with a state-of-the-art emergency call system, 24/hour assistance, and medical management.
Meadowthorpe feels like the best of both worlds: the professional care of a group home with the tight community of a smaller home.Where Meadowthorpe really shines is in its high staff-to-resident ratio. With a ratio of one caregiver for every eight residents, Meadowthorpe provides unparalleled attention and care. Staff members know each resident’s name, preferences, history, and needs, and they design...

Always sounds much better than the reality. Unfortunately. Staff turnover is high. Sometimes activities for residents don't happen. And it is not someone's home, even though remaining at home is not an option at this time. Overall positive though.

There was an incident with his medication. Some medication was missing, and they said he had opened the locked door (combination), taken it out, and flushed it. He was unable to open that locked door. The container of medication was too big to flush. Staff members just said they would look into it and move his medicine out of his room to a secure location. This did not happen. When asked, they stated that they were leaving it there to "watch" him. The staff was not aware that he should be "watched.” They did not watch him swallow his medication; therefore, it wasn’t taken as directed. Without the medication, he may display aggressive behaviors, which is what happened, and he had to be moved. Once moved and medication was given consistently, he did display those behaviors.

Turnover seems high but I'm told all care facilities have trouble keeping good help. Everyone is kind, caring, and courteous.

While Meadowthorpes unique structure design and daytime staffing is very good; night time is different. At night there is one staff per cottage if 8 people. If the resident is not compliant, if they are restless, fidget/walk that one person cannot cover as needed. I was called multiple times to drive out and sit with the resident ie baby sit. I'm sure this is an individual issue however, it did occur and became obvious that the single staff at night per cottage only works with near perfect scenario. A perspective family also needs to understand that it is a very controlled facility. If a resident does not adhere to the "ideal" resident standards, outside the norm - the facility is less than cooperative. Meaning - it is their way or the highway. Again, this might be due to the method of staffing. Delightful at the beginning- when the resident's changed to where they could no longer provide services - they would not provide and extension of stay- issuing an - must be out date. That said.... I still feel the amount charged at settlement was not properly prorated.

We had a very positive tour experience with Meadowthorpe. All of the staff were very nice, but it just did not have that homey feeling that we were looking for.
They keep my loved one, busy with activities. The value for the money is very equitable, and not over priced. We picked this community because, it's close to home, we liked the environment, it's like cottages, and it seemed more homey.

Our family had an in person tour and the tour was fine it would of been a great second option but we just wanted a place not in the Lexington area because it was a little to far away tour was fine but did not want the location in lexington
Good and smaller community, with a unique concept. This wasn't the right fit for our loved one.
Back in February we had to put my Mom in Assisted Living due to her dementia progressing. She needed someone around all the time to watch and make sure she was safe, directions on where things were and just reminders on daily functions. Meadowthorpe popped up when I started looking. Umm…not the ideal location (I live in Jessamine County, too far away) but something made me call them. I looked at other places but kept looking back at Meadowthorpe. The staff at Meadowthorpe met all my wants and Mom’s needs. They were great to work with. AND I can’t say enough good things about Earl the Activity Director. He was the BEST! Always letting my Mom follow him around and engaging her in all the activities! The residents in her cottage were so patient with her, they were a family! Thumbs up for Meadowthorpe and would totally choose them again.

A wonderful facility with an optimal caregiver ratio with a responsive and caring team and staff. Prompt and punctual in returning phone calls, emails and texts, which is vitally important to determine the right facility. While still uncertain of the level of care required for Mother, at this time, Meadowthorpe is an immediate contender with availability, yet final decisions of placement will be determined by progress and final diagnosis. Impressive.

Beautiful facility but we want only one room with an attached bath to prevent any confusion and allow reduced walking. Staff were very informative and the setting is very secure, affordable, easily accessible, but we do not feel it is a good match for our needs.

A Place for Mom has scored Meadowthorpe Assisted Living and Memory Care 7.9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
