There is good and bad with Karolwood. let’s start with the positive. The nurses and most all of the aids have been very helpful and caring when it comes to caring for my mom. They are also extremely friendly to me when I come in there, which is almost daily. For the negative, we first have the dated decor. I think if they spent a few dollars to update the place with some new carpet and fresh paintings on the walls, it would give the place a much better first impression. The other negative is the food. They are very stingy with the amount of food you get and it is often not hot. If you decide you don’t want their main lunch or dinner item, you can opt for an alternate. And that means chicken noodle soup from a can or a grilled cheese with stale bread.

My father paid for a full month for my mom to stay here while she was dying. She was not given pain medications when she asked for them & she was suffering greatly from having multiple strokes & a injured leg. They let her lay their for hours until my family threw a fit for them to give her meds because she was crying. She passed about 15 minutes after she finally got her meds. She was in so much pain she could not pass peacefully because of these people that don't pay attention to their patients. Another complaint is this company owes my father a refund for 28 days & he has been given the run around on a refund since February about this. I've been calling on the phone & yesterday they told me they would have a answer for me today. Today I am told the manager is out until [date removed] & I have to call back then. I'm sick of being given the run around by you people. Give my father back his money or you will be talking to my lawyer.

My loved one and I were previously residents at Karolwood Gardens of Portsmouth and overall, the experience was pretty good. The food was good at first and then it became terrible. There was also constant rotation in the management staff. I liked the set up of the facility, with the small neighborhoods. The 2 bedroom suite was nice. I liked having the microwave, fridge and freezer. They kept our apartment clean, but there were other areas that weren't. The laundry rooms were dirty and clothes got left in there when the staff did laundry. Some other floors and public rooms weren't very clean. Some staff were friendly and some were not. Then there were the groups that met outside, left the pagers inside and didn't respond to resident calls. That was one of the most frustrating things. We didn't get involved in very many activities. I did go to the exercise class, which was good. There was a problem with my loved one getting his meds in a timely, regular time. The price was pretty good.

I think the facility is good for my mother, yes some things could be better but overall I am pleased. We picked this community, because of the price and I thought it would be a good match for my mother and her needs.

The experience was a nightmare. There was no one there, who knew what they were doing. They need well trained staff. The food was terrible. There was a situation, in which my loved one needed assistance, and I could not find anyone. This was not a safe place. They did not have my loved one in the system, which was very questionable.

The meals and dining service can be a hit or miss sometimes and they could work to improve on their high turnover rate with their staff

I toured this community 3 weeks ago and fell in love with the staff and the atmosphere. It is perfect for what we were looking for. I moved my mom in the community a week ago and she is really enjoying herself. They had live music on Friday outside and she just ranted about how fun it was. She said the food is really good.

I have a friend that lives there and they had a family parade event and I was allowed to attend. It was very nice the residents seemed so happy and they really enjoyed themselves. The staff looked just as excited it was nice. I really have enjoyed being apart of all the events. I have also enjoyed virtual visits with my friend. She seems to be so happy there. I may join her in the next 5 years.

My father is on the memory care unit. The staff to resident ratio is very good. That was a big deal for us when placing him. The staff really are able to take their time and care for him the way we would wamt to ourselves. I really appreciate them.

Finding a place that genuinely cares for your love one is hard. Province Place of Maryview is not your average assisted living facility. Instead of just taking your money and filling a spot, they actually take the time to see if your love one is a good fit for them. Meaning that want to give and provide the best care. If they cannot do that, they tell you. My mother was treated like a queen. The whole staff knows their job and they cross every t and dot every I. Outside of their roles they provided my mom with love, companionship, activities, delicious food and a safe environment. My family was able to relax more knowing that our mom was in good hands. You are able to come and go at any time to check on your love one. That was very important to me. I was able to (spot check) in the beginning to make sure mom was treated properly. That (spot checking) did not last long at all- mom was ok and adjusted very well. My mom passed 8/21/2018 and she passed with dignity and love while being a resident on Province Place of Maryview. She did not have to leave when her health declined. The director, nurses and staff worked very closely with Hospice and my mom passed peacefully. This place treats their residences like family.

All the caretakers seem to truly care about the residents and getting to know them. Its hard to find somewhere where the people are sincere and the staff here is which makes me feel very good about my decision.

Province Place provided good care for mother. The main complaint I have is that apparently there is a shady deal going on with the pharmacy they use. I received a bill for medicine 5 months after she left for a signifiCan't amount of money. My mom virtually had medicine with no co-pay prior to that. Province did not notify me of this situation.

I'll tell ya the truth, Province Place is great, but for my dad it didn't work out, but it wouldn't have worked at any place. That place is wonderful though, I would highly recommend them, I've already told my kids that where I want to go. I really don't know what happened, hindsight being 20/20 I think it might have been a sun downing issue. He's not really at that point yet but I think there was a mix-up with the doctors orders and they wouldn't give him his sleeping medication. I was really hopeful it would work, he loved it when he was there, he went and had lunch and loved his room and he was there having a great time all day. But it was not the facility at all, they were great, they did everything, I didn't even look anywhere else because if he wasn't happy here, he wouldn't be happy anywhere.

A Place for Mom has scored Karolwood Gardens of Portsmouth 7.9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
