Although they've had a lot of turnover and ups and downs, since my father first arrived there, now, they have a wonderfully caring staff. As for the activities, they went through a period when they were not offering a whole lot and what they did offer, was geared towards very active seniors. But under the new management, the activities have gotten better and for a broader, physical abilities level.

At first things were good. Most staff were friendly and the management tied hard and I think still do. When the chef left things changed. The food is cold, the staff unhappy and the quality of meals are inconsistent. One morning there was no coff and they said they were out. If my mother is late even 5 min for a meal she is chastised and once was told she couldn’t eat. There is no reasonable way for her to get s meal if she is sick. Residents have to come fill out a request and come back for food. If she has back pain she has to get dressed to go out and again wait and go out again. It is confusing even who to ask. Some meal staff are impatient and clearly unhappy which gets shared with the residents. If someone would just bring the meal it would help. At this time she has lost 8 lbs and weighs 108. She is already frail and thin and we have to make sure she has food she can eat. She likes her apartment but the chaos and dissatisfaction of the staff is problematic.

I would say that it is a pretty good place for a loved one that can take care of them selves. [name removed] may have to go into the next step can't afford a caregiver but he can't take care of himself either.

We sadly lost Mom-n-Law at New Year and had to move father into a new place quickly. I had been working with a Place for Mom for a few weeks and up came a referral for Holiday Virginian. They had a great offer and the sales staff was excellent. After a great visit father-in-law was very excited to move!

Since I have been here it has been a pleasure, I did not want to be here at first and once I moved in I am so grateful for this community and all the staff that are here. My neighbors and staff have made me feel so welcome and loved. Since I have been here they have helped me mentally with my grief and pain. It has been truly a blessing. I want to personally [name removed] the sales manager and thank Lisa the office manager as well as [name removed] the General manager for helping encourage me to hang in there. I wanted to give up but they kept pushing me and now I attend all the events and thoroughly enjoy all of the activities. Food has improved 200%. I love posting all the great times I have had here on facebook. Very grateful to be apart of this community.

The staff is incompetent and lazy. Housekeeping is horrible. I had to plead with them to clean the one elevator, which is used often to transport meals. My housekeeper used a brush to clean my toilet and directly on my sink fixtures. Gross. Roaches and ants. Not helpful and if they didn't put it in writing it's not going to happen. I was misled by the salesperson. The food not good quality. Poor menu combinations and the diet is not appropriate for the age group and medical conditions of the community. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Suggestions for improvement: Initial orientation introducing staff and who to go to for help with issues. Not allow sales people to make offers. I was told things by sales person and told differently by actual manager. Only one time of housekeeping in six weeks. Dirty dishes on table when we sit down to meals. Better inventory would prevent running out of condiments and sometimes entrees.

The Virginian is the best place we've seen. I like the cleanliness of the facility and the friendliness of the staff. Everybody is very easy to get along with and very helpful. The apartment is very nice. Everything has been great - we've had no problems. It was an easy process getting moved in. And they call me if there are any problems.

Our family had an in-person tour and we just knew it was not going to be the place for our loved one - they were going through a bunch of renovations and the person giving the tour was temporary so they did not know a lot of stuff.

February 16, 2023Thank you for considering our community and we appreciate your feedback. Our renovations will be wrapping up soon and we’d appreciate the opportunity to show you the finished project. I’ve shared your comments with our General Manager and wish you the best in finding your loved one’s new home.
It was a good tour experience. The tourist was really nice. It seemed older and needed updating.
The cleanliness is great. Going under renoovation. The people are amazing/great. The staff is excellent. There is not a variety with the food options, but the food is good. They have things for people who are very active. It would be nice if they had more options for the dementia residents. We picked this community because, they made us feel like family, had my loved ones best interest at heart, we loved the apartments, and they were friendly. Thank you so much to A Place for Mom. It was wonderful services , you made it so easy, and it was a good experience

Our family had an in person tour and the tour experience was good but we were able to eat a meal there for lunch and the food was terrible
This is the third set of management staff that have had in the last 7 months. Housekeeping is sometimes just not done. This is more nursing home like and not a retirement environment like we thought. My loved one is happy with what she is getting. They offer a variety of activities here. They do not have enough kitchen staff. The front desk staff is usually in the kitchen due to staff shortages. They were helping serve during meal times. My loved one said the food seems like the same thing over and over. Foods delivered to her room where never what she asked for. She was told "you get what's leftover" when her food was delivered to her room by a staff member. That is unacceptable for what we pay. French fries with no ketchup, seafood with no cocktail sauce. These are obvious necessities during these meals that they are missing and my loved one has to bring herself.

Some of the staff is very good and other staff are non existent. They had a max exodus of staff recently. The front office staff will cook and serve the food. The food will sometimes consist of frozen pizza and canned corn for meals. We are having to provide my loved one's food instead. The community told me that they had a chef on staff and that has turned out not to be true. The activities are good and they have picked up for the residents recently. The community told us there was transportation for the residents to use; however, that only started within the last week. This is now allowing residents going to lunch outside of the community.

The Virginian is a nice, quiet and clean place to live. I haven't seen a lot of interaction amongst the residents; but everything seems to be fine so far.

The community is very clean and the staff has been very friendly. The meals and dining service is overall pretty good, but they are understaffed at times so the dining service might be a little slow. The activities are ramping back up and right now the value for cost is very good. Everything is included and the only extra thing our loved one has to pay for is a landline.

We had a really good first impression, on our tour two different residents on two separate occasions came and spoke with the sales lady who was leading the tour about how happy they were to be at The Virginian. The space itself our loved one is in has been a really good fit for her, and she is really happy.

A Place for Mom has scored Holiday Virginian 7.9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
