Great Oaks is very well Staffed with plenty of resident support people. The apartments are generously sized and well maintained. The genuine caring, mentally and physically, is all over the place. The dining Room food is simple and basic nutrition is the focus, but it could use a little more imagination. The activities are well planned and executed and there is strong emphasis on religious faith. Overall, I would choose Great Oaks again and am glad I chose this facility for my assisted living home.... Read more

Response from Great Oaks Senior Living
September 13, 2024Ms. Sue, We are so happy that you are enjoying Great Oaks. We are so blessed to have you here! Thank you for the review.
The decor is timeless &-traditional. Every staff member that I saw smiled and greeted me. This was an unplanned tour so it was great to see rooms with no "cover-ups. The owner came out to speak to me. This will be great!

April 4, 2024We are glad that you were happy with your tour and look forward to meeting with you and your loved one again!
After Mom moved in, 4 days later they said she needed memory care. She had an appointment with her geriatric doctor the next week. I said I want to get his opinion. He said absolutely not needed. She is not trying to escape nor is she having behavioral issues. After I discussed this with the Assisted Living coordinator we did not move her to memory care. The very next day I got a call from nursing administrator to talk about her "behavior". I asked what behavior issue is she having. She said she is crying too much. Mom fell, broke her hip and went to rehab. During her rehab stay her husband of 70 years passed away. She was in the third new area to live within 5 weeks. And after living with her husband in their home for greater than 20 years, I think I might cry too. So the first 10 days were rough on the family. With that being said, she is loving Great Oaks now. She said it is like a family and everyone treats her very well. She smiles and waves at everyone. The family is thrilled with her new found happiness at Great Oaks.

Response from Great Oaks Senior Living
April 4, 2024Thanks for your review. At Great Oaks, we love our residents and their families just as if they are our own. We are glad that you are a part of our Great Oaks family.
Housekeeping is wonderful! Medication techs are wonderful! Care takers seem to have a turn over quit frequently. Not much personality there. They check in every couple of hours, but don't really interact with mom. They just pop in, push the button and leave. Mom was quarantined in her room for 5 days because she was exposed to Covid, they were very late bringing meals. She pushed button a few times and they finally brought meal. The person who signed us up seems to be just a marketing specialist. Any questions or comments made to her are forwarded on to others. Even though her office is 4 doors down. The meals are not good. Mother eats, but complains that the items are poor quality. They serve a tremendous amount of broccoli!

I came to know Great Oaks 4 years ago. In that time I have built relationships with Staff and Residents. I have been around this industry since 1998 and I can honestly say Great Oaks is by far one of the best communities I have known. The staff can be seen welcoming residents and visitors alike. It is often a place full of laughter and song. I have watched residents build meaningful relationships with their peers and create forever friendships. They play games together, walk together and enjoy spending time with each other. It truly is like being with family. The administrator is thoughtful and always looking to deliver the best care for the residents. It is a clean and happy environment.

Our loved one has been in their care for many years. While she was able to care for herself, everything was fine. As her medical needs increased, the level of service decreased. We are not happy at all with the level of care and the lack of response from the staff. They are not properly equipped to handle individuals that need significant hands-on care. In addition, we strongly believe that our loved one is being given medication that is not prescribed to her - we actually have evidence to support that theory.

This is a nice community. We liked the people we met. This community did not offer the respite stay option we were looking for at the time.

My mom is in the level 1 Memory Care and it has not been going it's best. People there are very comatose and there is no interaction. They take long to get to her, I have pushed the call button and waited 20 minutes. There may not be enough staff to oversee the community. I have left messages for the director and i have not got a response. The meals are not tasting good, it is bland and watery. They have activities but It seems that my daughter and I are the only ones taking her to them otherwise she will be sitting in her room. the community is outdated, when I have to leave through their doors, there are no automatic open buttons and the staff don't help.

Everything is so wonderful here. The staff is outstanding and they really care about there residents. The food is not always the best, but they do offer healthy choices. The community is very beautiful and they offer so many activities. My loved one loves the exercise. Also my loved one likes that the rooms are big and bright.

When we moved my mother to Great Oaks she was in one section of the facility. After one month, Care management moved her to a different section because of the staff to patient ratio and the time it took to meet her needs. Although she did have some cognitive issues, she interacted with people, made friends, and could communicate her needs. As she was in a power wheel chair, she required a handicap sink which the original room did not offer. In order to accommodate this need and the need for better resident/staff care, they moved her to the memory care section. Unfortunately, this also required her to give up her power wheel chair which devastated her along with being placed with residents who were not very interactive. I have had issues with follow-up on concerns I presented and with unreturned phone calls. However, the rooms are very nice and clean and I have had no problems with the care staff. I do think this facility could have better separation for care based on staff/resident ratio for those residents requiring more physical attention. We feel my mother was moved to memory section before it was truly warranted. Therefore, I am disappointed based upon my initial expectations of care. I chose Great Oaks to keep mom close by and because the cost was less expensive than another facility I toured.

I think it has just been the overall atmosphere and welcoming experience of the place that is so good. My loved one feels very comfortable and very safe there and I think she has made a good choice in choosing Great Oaks.

My Mother has been a resident of Great Oaks for over seven years, moving from assisted living to memory care in the Gardens as her needs increased. She has received excellent care from employees who are capable and caring. She will tell you that "they take care of me". This includes personal care, both physically and emotionally, and family notification of any concerns noted by caretakers. Although she misses family, she is contented and sees Great Oaks as her home as long as she needs it.

Overall our experience with Great Oaks has been a good one! The staff are all very friendly and professional, and they make sure that your loved one gets the kind of care that is best for them. They're very conscious of if something is not working out, or care needs are not being met, and we really appreciate how they worked with us to get everything the way it needed to be! One of the big deciding factors for us with Great Oaks was that they have multiple secure outdoor areas for their memory care patients. Mom loves to be outside, but does need to be somewhere secure.

A Place for Mom has scored Great Oaks Senior Living 9.2 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
