Response from Charter Senior Living of Madison
September 16, 2024Phil, thank you for sharing your positive experience! We're glad to hear we delivered such a great experience. If there's anything further we can do for you, we are happy to help!
The cleanliness is exemplary but whatever deficiency you find is compensated by the staff. I have minor issues with the way the staff is scheduled, but they have little control over that. The staff however is professional, available, always upbeat (happy, accommodating as possible . They all work very hard to make this place as comfortable as possible. This is the first facility of this type I have ever experienced, so I have no comparison, but I was in the service industry for decades. The staff makes up for any shortcomings.

The staff is friendly and helpful. My loved one likes the meals and activities. The housekeeping good. The move in process was good. We do have some problems with phone connection. I would recommend this facility to others.

A Place For Mom was helpful in identifying nearby facilities, which helped us start the process. It gave us direction and confidence in starting the unfamiliar daunting task of finding a place Mom could live safely and happily. We have been so pleased with Cedarhurst from the beginning. The tone and manner of their representatives during phone calls was especially appealing because it was relaxed, polite, respectful, knowledgeable, and thus reassuring. Kindness and a slow, gentle voice can really make a difference and instill confidence and trust. Well done! The country-like setting, the welcoming, clean, and well-appointed décor all gave a nice first impression. Very friendly staff all the way around. Good- humored, attentive cleaning staff. Cleanliness is topnotch, in the dining room, the hallways and other common areas, and with the bed linen laundry services. Kitchen and meal serving staff are very friendly, always respectful to residents and their visitors. Smiles, eye contact, and quick service from each one of them. Activities opportunities abound, and the enthusiasm of the Life Enrichment director is inspiring. Food choices are good. Having the kitchen items available throughout the day is a plus. The only areas that might need improvement would be 1) the grounds cleanliness near the front entrance (which might have to do with some structural issues with the balcony above the entrance and or front landscaping in the winter?), and 2) the recent multiple changes in administrative staff (could be due to industry-wide staffing problems, but it is heart-breaking that favorite good people are no longer there). Otherwise, we are so happy with our choice of Cedarhurst as a safe, clean place for our mom with a kind and friendly care staff. Makes Mom and us, her family, feel like she has the best place to live and enjoy this chapter of her life. Cedarhurst has been the supportive environment we hoped it would be. We are all happy with Cedarhurst!

This turned out to be perfect place for Mom. A little more nature and countryside instead of city environment. She loves the apartment. She loves the trees, birds, and wildlife she sees out her window. They need to work on the food service a little bit.

Beware of what they promise vs. what they deliver. Whether in regards to housekeeping, commitment to level of care, pet policies, computer center, dining, etc. There is so much that was not as promised. On New Years' day they shut down the dining room and gave us sack lunches consisting of a sandwich and a bag of potato chips. They hired a new head of dining, and things have improved a little bit. But for months they would post a menu, yet you had no idea what you'd actually be getting. They would post roast beef for dinner, and you would get a hot dog instead. Up until the holidays, they had a nurse on staff. But they transferred her over to another facility 60% of the time. However, for most of January and part of February, there was no nurse here. They have finally hired a new nurse. But I don't understand how they could leave us mostly uncovered other than the regional nurse coming in on occasion, who was not as familiar with the residents and their health issues.

Cedarhurst was very nice and was our first choice but we were told they would not take government funding and we didn't want to have to move if funds ran out in the future. The places may all have similar issues. Things we have experienced can be hidden in a 1 hour visit. Hard to say if somewhere else is better without actually having to stay there. We ultimately made the decision based on location to our home for convenience and we were under a time crunch. That was probably not the best plan. Had a chance to observe good interactions between staff and residents and they had recently done some remodeling that was nice.
The place is kept clean for the most part, but my loved ones room could have been cleaner. The staff were usually friendly and helpful. The care staff, did the best they could with my loved one despite being understaffed. (A common issue these days). I understand they were working on hiring another nurse, which will help. The food was hit or miss. My loved one disliked the food immediately after our first meal corned beef, which was a hard, rectangular patty no juicy layers of beef. She was then put off by the small portions and cold temperatures of the food. With activities, there seemed to be quite a few options but many were scheduled in the morning. Mom was never one to get up early and so didn't participate much, but she liked Bingo. They have a bus, and groups go out into the community. Mom was looking forward to warmer weather when they would go out for lunches and other places. In winter store trips were more the norm.

I thought Cedarhurst of Madison was very very nice. There was a receptionist right when you walk in (not all places have that). The person who gave us the tour was well known and friendly with all of the residents. And she gave me a lot of hints and tips, even though my mother couldn’t go there due to her condition.

February 1, 2023Hi there! Thank you so much for this incredible review. This is exactly the kind of experience we strive for. We wish you the best of luck, and please feel free to come see us if you need anything!
I toured this community and it was nice, clean, and everyone was friendly. It was fairly economical, compared to others in the area. They only had a Studio available and the bedroom area in the studio just seemed too small.
