Review for Canterbury Gardens

I have nice things to say. For me it was close so I could stop and check on her every day. I got to know staff by name. I would recommend yes. I think that mom received a good quality of care. They often did seem understaffed. Sometimes this was due to challenging residents. Some needed more care than others in the memory care wing. I think mom was one of the easier residents. Staff seemed to like her very much.... Read more

About the facility Canterbury Gardens

Tucked away on the banks of the Cowlitz River, Canterbury Gardens is a thoughtfully built memory care community offering a serene environment where residents and visitors can unwind. The community sits among a variety of gorgeous flowers, trees, and hedges so residents can enjoy strolling the walking paths while taking in the natural beauty of the lush gardens.

In close proximity to the community, residents have an abundance of restaurants, shops, and parks to explore. Plus, there are several medical facilities nearby to help ensure medical care is never far from reach. The surrounding area offers many amenities — as does the community itself. Residents enjoy spending their leisure time relaxing in the elegant living rooms, community sunroom, on-site salon, and more. They can even join fellow residents for regularly scheduled events.

As a Koelsch community, Canterbury Gardens believes that memory care shouldn’t be an afterthought — it should be the only thought. Their memory care approach focuses on four techniques — gaze, speech, verticality, and touch — that promote a holistic ethos of care for each resident. These techniques are reflected within the community’s intentional design and within the Live WellⓇ program which is built to help individuals with dementia connect...

Thank Goodness for the Canterbury Gardens!

The Canterbury Gardens was so good to educate and support me through a tremendously difficult time when I learned my mother had dementia. The Alzheimer Support Group was key to my survival!! Though the guilt is hard to swallow in placing my mother in an assisted living facility, I knew I wasn't able to do it alone. The Canterbury Gardens team was able to give her love, dignity, respect and compassionate care. The staff was educated on how to approach someone who has behaviors. I have no regrets knowing that I had made the right decision even though it was an emotional one!

A wonderful place

My father has been living at Canterbury Gardens for six months and I could not be happier with his care. I love the home - like environment and the social interaction he has, the cheerful and friendly staff, and how clean everything is. When medical issues have occurred the nurses have been right on it and contacted both his family and his physician. I also appreciate how we, his family, are encouraged to participate in both his plan of care and the activities at the facility. I have visited at all hours and have, without exception, been greeted by cheerful, competent staff. My father receives the best care in the most pleasant environment possible. I am grateful to all the staff for providing such a place during a very difficult time in my family's life.

Workers love what they are doing and take excellent care of their charges.

We moved my father from another facility in Longview because he suffered from dementia and they were not able to keep him The Gardens was our first choice but they had no beds so we placed him else where. When a bed opened we moved him and what a change it was. He went from a four person room to a two person room and had room to have a tv and chair in his room. He was able to roam around the home and was kept safe. From administration all the way down to the lowest worker and experienced nothing but loving care for my father. All the people that worked there were careful to see that my dads needs were met and they did it with a smile on their faces. The nurses were very professional and really kept up with all the meds my dad needed from ordering to administrating them. I never experienced seeing care people going about their business with love and caring for the person they were taking care of before. They truly liked what they were doing and it showed in the care that my father received. I would recommend this home to anyone that is in need of a caring place to take care of your loved ones. Everyone was great!!!

Our family highly reccommends the Canterbury Gardens

My Great Aunt is a resident at Canterbury Gardens facility. My Family is thrilled with the level of loving care our aunt receives and the generosity of this facility. Not only does this facility have great activities for its residents making their lives much more enjoyable, but the staff at the Canterbury Gardens has also worked with our family allowing us to partially pay for her care while we were waiting to sell her home. Our family highly recommends this facility!

Don't Go There

This Care facility has a terrible communications problem! From upper management to the workers on the floor. I witnessed it all! After I had seen and experienced enough, it took me 10 days to get my husband out of there! I wouldn't place my dog at that facility!

Response from Canterbury Gardens

April 10, 2015

We at Canterbury Gardens are deeply saddened by this particular situation and understand the disappointment that the family must feel. It is rare and unfortunate when it happens but sometimes a community and a resident are not a good fit for a variety of reasons. While staying with us for almost five months, this resident received excellent care during his respite stay and also when the family decided to move him in full time. We express our sincere apologies for any inconvenience that the family has experienced. Canterbury Garden’s team has worked diligently over the last few years and recently earned a Certificate of Achievement from the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services along with a zero deficiency state survey in 2014. Our highest priority as health care providers is the care and comfort of our residents. And we will continue to strive for excellence in this area.

Very helpful

Very helpful and kind staff, They make my family member feel valued and as if they look forward to seeing him. They also are good at keeping our family in the loop. Our family member likes it at the facility and loves having the people to visit with especially the staff. The staff seems respectful and seem to fit this work well.

A Place for Mom has scored Canterbury Gardens 8.6 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
