I have nice things to say. For me it was close so I could stop and check on her every day. I got to know staff by name. I would recommend yes. I think that mom received a good quality of care. Tucked away on the banks of the Cowlitz River, Canterbury Gardens is a thoughtfully built memory care community offering a serene environment where residents and visitors can unwind. The community sits among a variety of gorgeous flowers, trees, and hedges so residents can enjoy strolling the walking paths while taking in the natural beauty of the lush gardens.
In close proximity to the community, residents have an abundance of restaurants, shops, and parks to explore. Plus, there are several medical facilities nearby to help ensure medical care is never far from reach. The surrounding area offers many amenities — as does the community itself. Residents enjoy spending their leisure time relaxing in the elegant living rooms, community sunroom, on-site salon, and more. They can even join fellow residents for regularly scheduled events.
As a Koelsch community, Canterbury Gardens believes that memory care shouldn’t be an afterthought — it should be the only thought. Their memory care approach focuses on four techniques — gaze, speech, verticality, and touch — that promote a holistic ethos of care for each resident. These techniques are reflected within the community’s intentional design and within the Live WellⓇ program which is built to help individuals with dementia connect...

Response from Canterbury Gardens
June 21, 2024Hi there, We are so glad that your mom is being well taken care of, thank you for your kind words.
Excellent, welcoming community in a home-like setting. Food is pretty good but sometimes cold or over-cooked. Residents & staff are friendly & helpful. Call necklace does not distinguish between life threatening emergency and routine assistance calls, & sometimes response is not immediate.

Response from Canterbury Gardens
March 1, 2024Hi there, Thank you for your kind feedback and helpful advice that helps us get better in our day to day activities.
The staff seem to genuinely love my mom. She really loves them too. She's always hugging them. And I love that they are free to hug her back. Touch is so important for dementia. They found her a roommate that is an absolute perfect fit. They are best pals and do everything together. We take her whenever we take mom. She's just become a part of our family now.

Response from Canterbury Gardens
February 15, 2024Thank you for this wonderful review, Shirley! We are honored to partner with you in caring for your mom with the respect and attention that she deserves.
I was very disappointed in the care that my mother received at Canterbury Gardens. They appear to be short staffed due to the strong smell of urine. My mother has issues with colitis and I had told the staff what foods needed to be avoided, which they claimed they did. However, I was told by a bath aid they she was having chronic diarrhea and fresh blood in the toilet. I was only told this due to being there at the right time, otherwise I doubt anyone would have contacted me about it. The food served is institutional including a lot of processed meats, overall cheap and not nutritious.

Response from Canterbury Gardens
December 16, 2023Thank you for your review. We appreciate your feedback and take all concerns seriously. We'd like to address the issues you raised regarding the care your mother received at Canterbury Gardens. Firstly, regarding the issue of being short-staffed, we want to clarify that the strong smell of urine wa s not due to a lack of staffing but rather a specific incident involving a resident. Once identified, we promptly addressed and cleaned the affected area. We acknowledge the dietary concerns you raised. At the time of assessment, we were not fully informed of your mother's specific dietary needs, and there were changes made later that we accommodated to the best of our ability. We did encounter some challenges, but we worked diligently to adjust the meal plans according to your instructions. If you have any further concerns or suggestions, we encourage you to reach out to us directly. We are committed to continuous improvement and providing the best possible care for our residents.
I picked it because it was close to home and one of the best places for my mother with memory care. I would recommend to others.

November 30, 2023Thank you, Tracy, for your wonderful review of Canterbury Gardens. We are honored that we can serve your mother, as well as your family, with our specialized memory care.
Good place to care for your loved one. Sometimes they seemed understaffed. We picked this community, because not many available in our area for memory care. Good location in local home community, and the availability.

Canterbury Gardens has been a really great experience so far, the community is very clean and the staff members are very friendly. We have not had experience with the meals and dining ourselves but he seems to be really happy. He does not always participate in the activities but he does enjoy when they take him outside to walk around. Overall the value is worth it, he is happy and we would recommend this community to other families.

I am happy to read that our community was there for you and your wife and will send your review to our team members. If we can serve you in any way, we would be grateful if you would call Nick, our Executive Director.
My dad has early onset Alzheimers and has been at The Gardens for almost a year. At first he went during the day while I worked and he just loved it so much he moved in! They are truly the best. It is clean, staff is very friendly and they really do love their residents. I can't even imagine where we would be without them. He is at the point now where he doesn't even want to come home with me! He feels safe and secure there and that just means the world to me. Thank You so much.

Mom has been a resident at the Gardens for the past nine months. She has gone from extremely anxious to thriving due to the amazing care she is receiving from the staff! We consider it such a blessing to see her happy, secure and comfortable in this beautiful facility. From the Administrative Staff, reception, nurses and caregivers we have found everyone extremely compassionate, not only to Mom, but our entire family. Communication is great, they keep us well informed about her medical and emotional needs, as well as activities at the Gardens. We can't thank them enough for the reassurance and peace of mind they provide for our family!!

Placing loved ones in ANY care center is difficult but 'The Gardens' is a wonderful home, The facilities are welcoming and clean, the staff is fantastic. Like most facilities, the food is not the best but acceptable. It is costly, but most care facilities are expensive. Would recommend this facility.

Response from Canterbury Gardens
November 4, 2016Marilyn, thank you for taking a few moments and writing this review for Canterbury Gardens Memory Care Community. We appreciate that you find our community clean and we couldn’t agree more that our staff is fantastic. Our Director of Dining Services is always trying to create a broad range of delicious foods, and we hope next time we knock your socks off. We appreciate your recommendation and please contact the Executive Director if you have any future questions or concerns.
My mother is a very social person. Canterbury Gardens has been very good for her because of this. Mom has Altzimers, but she still loves to be around people. She also loves to give kisses and to nurture others. It has given her lots of opportunities to do that. Because of this, she has basically stopped obsessing about things. I use Canterbury Gardens as a day care facility for her. It works very well for me. I also have a care giver at my home frequently that help in other parts of her care. Canterbury recently did just go into quarantine because of an upper respiratory infection there. I suppose that happens to places like that. There are a lot of elderly people staying there and a lot of people come and go. So mom is quite bored right now. I look forward to being able to take her there again. I also appreciate all the activities that they attempt to keep their charges involved in.

I prayed for help for my family to be able to make the best decisions for Grandma and Papa. I feel like the Garden has been a huge part of that. It seems ever since Papa started to visit on a respite basis that the answers have come bit by bit as they have been needed. Now he lives at this lovely facility I sort of feel bad calling it a facility because it is much more than that to us all. It is Papa's home. Each of the family members are met where they are at in the process toward acceptance of our situation. The staff are well picked and seem happy at their careers and therefor exude that to the residents. Papa is the happiest I have seen him in years. I only hope we can find a place like this for Grandma that will fit her needs as well when the time comes. So we won't be concerned how she is doing on her own.

After several years of bringing my husband here for respite care, I finally had to place him permanently because of falling, wandering and increased dementia. It was an easy transition since he was familiar with the people and place. He had been resistant to showering so I'd bring him in for an hour and they would shave, shampoo and shower him. It was nice to bring a scruffy old man in and go home with a happy, clean handsome guy. The facilities are beautiful, the smell is nice, the caregivers are wonderful, often joking with those who respond well to that. They tailor care to the individual. For instance my husband often fell out of bed so now his mattress is on the carpet and he is not in danger. My life has changed so much for the better, knowing he has great care. I love this place!

My family and I are quite pleased with the care my dad receives at the Gardens. It is a the atmosphere is calm, it is a beautiful facility and smells clean. More importantly all of the staff there, know each of the residents as individuals. The residents there are always cared for with dignity and respect and as much personal touch as possible. I understand that there can be some guilt issues for people when it is time to place family members but I know I made the best choice for my dad. I am there several times a week and like what I see. I have enjoyed my visits and all of the residents as well as the staff who always make me feel welcome. I have NEVER had a communication issue at the facility. In fact, they assist us regularly in communication issues with health care providers.
