Calusa Harbour is a very large community. It is busy and there is a wide variety of people and things going on at all times. The decor was older and we did not get a homey feel from the facility. My parents are small town, so this was not the right fit for them.
Response from Calusa Harbour
December 9, 2021Thanks for visiting us. We know that at first glance our size can feel overwhelming, but we are small and homey at heart. Amenities are often close to each resident’s apartment, and new residents find that they feel at home right away as our residents and team are very welcoming. Note also the community offers separate Independent and Assisted Living neighborhoods, which benefits those individuals whose needs change over time. We would be delighted to introduce you and your parents to happy residents and families who can share their experience of moving to Calusa Harbour. We'd also suggest considering a short term stay, which is perfect for people who want to try out the community without making a long term commitment. Please let us know if we can be of assistance, and we hope to see you again!
We chose Calusa Harbour because they offered several different levels of care and I liked that she could go forward here. They have taken away skilled nursing, but they do still offer assisted living and independent living. Every one of thr staff members is so kind, we have not had any problems. The food is wonderful, we have eaten with her as well and we were impressed, they are chef prepared meals. it is a great value for the money. My mom is so happy here and we have been very pleased with our experience and would recommend.

Response from Calusa Harbour
September 29, 2021Tina, we love to hear that both you and your mother are happy at Calusa Harbour! It was great reading your praise for the entire team, and our chef will especially enjoy hearing you both love the food! We are so happy to have your family be a part of our community at Calusa Harbour and very much appreciate your recommendation.
We found the facility to be too large. Mother was overwhelmed by the simple size of the building and amount of residents.

Response from Calusa Harbour
September 7, 2021We understand that size can be overwhelming at times. We would like to chat with you about some of the strong points of being a larger community. While the building is large, all of the amenities are close to each resident’s apartment as they can just hop aboard the nearest elevator to arrive for dining, programs and gatherings with friends. Another aspect that makes our community larger is that we have both Independent and Assisted Living neighborhoods which is a benefit should individual needs change. Our residents and team are very welcoming and newcomers find that they make new friendships and feel at home right away. We would be delighted to introduce your mother to happy residents who had the same feelings that she does so that your mom can ask them about life at Calusa Harbor. We do have two suggestions for your family. Arrange for a short “Staycation” for your mother so she can experience our warmth and hospitality firsthand before making a decision. We can also connect you with a sister community that is smaller in size, yet has the same Five Star signature programs.
We virtually toured this community. The staff was very friendly and shared a lot of great information. The tour was good but we couldn't do an in-person tour due to covid

My Mom lived at Calusa Harbor for over 3 years, The only reason she left was to move closer to her family. Calusa was a wonderful place for her and even though she is in a nice place now, she says "it isn't Calusa". I can't say enough about the responsiveness and caring of the people who work there. Mom could just call the desk or walk by the desk and someone always greeted her warmly and helped her. This was true of everyone there. The dining room staff, security, bus drivers, and custodians all could not have been more helpful to her. Their quality care helped her through many crisis'. My siblings and I always felt that Calusa kept her safe and happy. We are truly grateful."

This is a very nice place. The staff is friendly and the community is kept clean. My loved one liked it there. It's a rather large community, and very active.

You would think "Oh, that would be a beautiful place to live," but when you go inside there is pipes running along the ceiling and it's not as nice as you would have thought. The apartments themselves are cute but they are very tiny. We couldn't live that crammed up, plus we have two little Yorkies. We also heard that the elevators were a problem.

I can't say one single thing bad about the place. The room was big, the room had a view, it was spectacular. It would have been the very best place. Just comparing the facilities, it was the most magnificent place that I saw. Because of medical condition of my friend, however, he was not ideal candidate. It was the same price as Emeritus, but much brighter, much better maintained, and just gorgeous. Food was delicious and the building was so beautifully maintained. Nothing else compared. Beautiful sitting areas, beautiful plants around the facility; I would move in myself.

A Place for Mom has scored Calusa Harbour 9.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
