Caring staff. Feels very homey. They took very good care of my mom after she broke a vertebrae in her back and needed a place to go before she could go home. Very accommodating about dietary preferences Nursing care was excellent.

They really make it homey. It's very intentional. Nice to see the residents having meals together. She's very content there.

It is a very individualized, supportive, kind and responsive residential site. The staff are professional, flexible, knowledgeable and kind. For amenities, they have a really nice outdoors, though in the winter wasn't so much of a situation, my dad could enjoy, but watching the birds and the deer was nice. Communication with the family was very regular, ongoing and helpful. I chose this community because it was near my home and was smaller, more individualized, and a home setting, which suited my dad better than a bigger facility.

It's adult foster care and that's it, and they don't properly care for people with any memory problems. it was a horrible experience. They assessed my mother in the hospital, she has Alzheimer's we moved her into the facility and she was out within a week they couldn't handle her. They kept her security deposit even though they asked her to move within a week. Their staff is unable to handle anybody who has any memory issues. For the week that she was there, they were constantly calling me to come and help. Do not use this facility if you care about your loved one. I did show up one day and my mother was laying on the floor and they had no idea what to do with her. One of the staff said they were withholding her medication, because they thought she should only go to the bathroom every other day. My mothers briefs were full and they refused to change her and said that the family helps out with those things. Overall, they are ill-equipped to handle anyone that is incontinent, and they do not do brief checks every two hours. I'm not even sure if they have a process of checking their briefs and how often.

My mother who lived at Birchwood Gardens passed away recently after living there for 8 months. She and the rest of our family could not have received a more loving and respectful process. The caregivers understand everything that a senior needs at every stage of life. Very grateful.

I feel lucky that we found Birchwood Gardens, which is one of the Birchwood assisted living properties. I see that my mother is comfortable and has consistent care, unlike some of the other facilities that we have tried. The small home setting allows the staff to give personal attention to each resident, and they welcome my visits and my input. They are competent and respectful. I sleep better because I believe that she is safe.

We had an absolutely great experience at Birchwood estate. The house was very clean with great food. My father cleaned his plate everyday. Staff was kind and considerate. He was well taken care of. [Name removed] who over sees the house would send me pictures of my dad weekly as I live out of state. So happy we found this Gem!!!

The staff is great. The home is clean and the care is good. A little disappointed in the the food. The first few weeks they served a lot of hot dogs at lunch and did not offer milk. But you could have it if you asked. When we interviewed the facility, twice we were told Birchwood Retreat had 2 staff persons during the day and an activities person a few times a week. Now there is usually only one staff person during the day and no activites person. Our mother was coming from a rehab facility were she was falling every day due to her dementia. Our concern was could Birchwood keep an eye on her for safety with only one staff member? But she has not fallen once while at Birchwood! She is getting good care. When the house is at capacity for residents there is usually 2 staff members during the day and when they have time they do exercizes or games with the residents. If we have a complaaint they act on it. We appreciate that.

These folks were not expecting us. The driveway was not plowed and when we knocked on the only accessible door, no one answered. We later found out that we could only enter via the front door so had to "shovel" our way in. The place looks clean, but suspect they are somewhat short staffed. There didn't seem to be any list of activities. They are opening a new one in Saline. Do you know when that will happen.

My wife is still adjusting to living at this care home. The people there do a nice job and they keep me updated about her care. She likes the food and they offer a nice outside area to enjoy. They keep the home clean so it is a healthy environment for the residents.

We had to move out of this facility because of different issues with care and incidents relating to accidents and disagreements with another resident. My family member has dementia and admittedly had some issues with going to the restroom in inappropriate places within the facility. The staff felt that he would be much happier in a different location and could not handle the care he needed.

A Place for Mom has scored Birchwood Living 9.8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
