Aviva West Hartford review

My parents are happy there so I would rate each of these five. I am also comparing Aviva to Harbor Chase where my mother-in-law was. My mother-in-law is now at Aviva. The cost is approximately half what Harbor Chase was, and Aviva has much better care.... Read more

my review of Atria Hamilton Heights,

We virtually toured this community and the tour was fine. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable, but there were a few things we didn't like. They had no TVs in the residence rooms and you had to use the furniture provided.

I would recommend

Our experience has been that the staff members have been responsive and kind. The admissions process was difficult for us, and they really worked hard to help us move through that. We feel extremely grateful that our loved one is here, safe and healthy. I would recommend to others looking.

Great Community for Active Independent Seniors

I really liked the Atria at Hamilton Heights. Like many similar facilities some apartments are small, which is a change for many. This facility has a selection of unique apartments, and the bathrooms are very accessible. The food is good. Currently it is very difficult to see how residents enjoy activities due to covid. We did inquire about the possibilities for trips into the community. My parents really liked the concept of being able to get out to restaurants and other activities once this ends. This director really worked with me to ensure this was the most appropriate choice for my father's needs. Setting up initial care plans and knowing just what to bring is challenging. Atria assissted living allows an affordable option for my parents to be in an accessible apartment, continue to be part of the greater community, and still have staff to assist my dad with activities of daily living. He loves maintaining as much independence as he can. He can now relax and enjoy life without worrying about maintaining his home or helping his wife with the heavy housework he can no longer do. Thanks so much to the director and nursing staff for evaluating my dad honestly to ensure his physical needs would be met. I appreciate the extra time and concern they took to ensure he will get appropriate care.

Overall great community

We really liked how caring the recreational therapist was, she was very nice and seemed like she really cared a lot about the residents. The community was very nice, it is a little smaller but it felt very cozy. It has a smaller dining room and living room area. They have nice size rooms, i would say it felt very homey. The food was good, but they didn't have much of a variety for the residents to choose from. We would recommend this facility to someone who is older and more advance in memory care.

Short Changed

I would not recommend this community. I feel like there are a lot of things that come into play. I believe they are running on a tight budget and they aren't able to provide the services that other locations are running. A lot falls through the cracks there. There were no programming since I put my parents there. I know that other communities were still running programming and this community decided to place all the residents on lock down. I know that this is a difficult time and it is a hard decision to make. I know that prior to COVID-19 they were starting to roll things due to budgets. It wasn't what was sold to us. I think the staff's hearts are in the right place. They are trying to do the right thing. The food was horrible, and it was hospital quality for taste. This was a huge bummer.

Care could be better

There have been a number of gaps in care. It took multiple conversations and follow ups to hopefully have gotten things right. They also failed to file to proper paperwork with the right insurance company for the long term care insurance, even after repeat conversations. After 6 months, and the issues we have had, the were nice enough to raise the rent by about 8%. On the positive side, our mom is happy, making friends and loves her apartment. The facility is nice and doesn’t feel like an institution or hospital. The staff all know her and have been most have been very helpful to her. If our mom wasn’t so happy, because of the business side of things, we probably would have moved her, but she is happy and don’t want to upset her at this point.

Would not recommend this place. No real concern for the elderly, money driven. They prey upon your "what's best for Mom" emotions and try to make it sound like they care. They don't. I feel this industry really needs to be more regulated. You'll get that same gut feeling, and trust me, your gut feelings are correct. This is how the 2 week respite went. Pressured driven sales tactics, Trying to get you to sign agreements for longer than you want prior to moving in, the old bait and switch. Poor follow up and follow through. My Mom needed an ottoman for an open wound she had on her leg and it was very important for her to keep it elevated. The Executive Director, who met us upon arrival and showed her to her room said he would get her one that night before he left. He was cordial, affable, and courteous. That was Thursday. When I came back on Monday, she still didn't have one. He never got it- I had to go out and get it. This was the FIRST day - and he is the guy running the place. His response - "Oh, I'm sorry". Not enough staff on. This place is big and getting around is very difficult. No signs anywhere. It's ridiculous. Elevators go to different parts of the complex, some go to the third floor, some don't. My mother was lost multiple times because of this. No one around to help her find her way led to frustration, crying and defecating in her clothes because she couldn't find her way to her room or get help. After the 3rd day, she wanted to come home. Since I paid up front for the 2 weeks, I asked her to please stay. After her release, they sent in home health care for follow ups. At this point, our family had spoken to and convinced our Mom to give it another try for a longer period of time. She said she would give it another chance. So, a few days before she was to go back, the home care worker from Atria told her "once you leave your home to go to Hamilton House, you're never coming back to your home". That threat scared my mother into not wanting to go. And as my mother put it, "if she said it once, she said it 50 times, your never coming back to your home". This representation of Hamilton House scared my mother into not going. So when I contacted the Executive Director and told him about this, I gave him my Moms number so he could talk to her, reassure her... whatever he needed to do to convince her to come back. My mother said to me "why would I believe him" referencing to his lack of follow through in her respite stay. He did apologize and say that he was sorry for the whole incident. A month later, I was sent a bill for $11,000 for time not spent at this place. I've called and emailed multiple times with no response. Think twice before you consider this place.

Stay away

Sorry, but this place I wouldn't recommend. *Food is good, waitstaff excellent! *Facility is nice except for the back- Dirty, Dirty entrance which has a door that doesn't work, dirty, smelly old carpets and walls, non working door. Buy some paint, a brush and febreeze. * Director - they should replace - unresponsive to requests, insensitive to seniors needs, not a caregiver. Kind of like a used car salesman. * Nurses are ok.

An Amazing Bit of Heaven

Considering that I am a new resident. . . all is great/good however I have perceived it in a short time. For certain every day has been a wonderful and new experience. What is amazing to me...all who live here go out of their way to acknowledge you. . "good morning", "what's happ;ening". . . "how goes your day". Dinner time, " try the salmon, it's delicious", "scratch the peas. . .try brussels sprouts instead. The interaction is warm and welcoming. The 10 am fitness is a MUST!!! It's uplifting, a spurt towards balance and each session is unique. What I learned within a very short time there is no such word as NO!! Instead, "Yes. . ."Will look into it". . . "Great Idea. . I'll work on this". Now for the miles....I'm convinced they are painted...If there is something unpleasant about Hamilton Heights, they certainly are hiding it, since I cannot find it.

Lots history and antiques in this building!!

I noticed that this community had a lot of history and beautiful antiques throughout the entire building which my loved one really liked. The breakfast they offered smelled very good and looked really fresh. The facility on the inside and out was absolutely gorgeous and had lots of great amenities available for the residents. The thing I liked most about my visit was how involved all of the residents where in activities throughout the complex and how many staff they had helping them. I did not care for the bedrooms they where a little small and none of them had a kitchen included. i also thought the community was way to big and overwhelming for my mother.

Respite care in a nice facility with friendly attentive staff

My parents needed to be closer to St. Francis while my dad is getting chemo. Atria was able to set up a "respite care" situation for them. They have a furnished apartment and a care level that meets their needs. They can get transportation to and from St. Francis, and it is very close. I was here during Winter Storm Ann, and the crew plowed and shoveled the parking lot and walk ways over night so they were all clear when residents woke up. Care, transportation and meals are a little confusing to my mom over the weekends, when the regular staff is not here, but we will figure that out while I'm here from California. The facility is beautiful and well cared for. The residents seem happy, and there are different activities that will appeal to different people. My mom has been able to make friends and has the care she needs, so my dad doesn't have to worry about her, and can focus on his own health. The staff is friendly and helpful. My dad said getting them set up here was the best Christmas present he could have gotten.

A Disasterous Mistake

We were told that my sister who was experiencing early dementia could live in Life Guidance ( their dementia unit) without the need for an independently hired companion. We were told that in fact no one in the dementia unit had that. It turned out almost everyone in the dementia unit was forced to hire an independent companion at huge expense. The reason for this, they admitted, was due to the severe understaffing.at Atria. Don't expect dementia care or expertise here. It is a facility with a locked door where the staff encourages drugging the residents into a stupor so they will be docile and easy to handle. I atribute much of my sister's swift decline to Atria Hamilton Heights.
