While the facility is mostly very good and their food is excellent, my experience as my husband’s caregiver for many years (and POA and health care proxy) in our 45 year marriage is that I am not alerted when nursing makes decisions about medical and other mangement issues. In general, communication is not great, though the staff are very kind. I could give you a number of examples that illustrate poor communication. The chain of command is hard to understand. Nursing staff (who are located in another part of the building) are actually supposed to supervise the day to day planning for direct hands-on care of memory unit residents. The program director and activities coordinator on the memory unit who are on-site 7 days/week appear to not have much authority to determine what happens with particular residents. A related staffing issue is that staff float -from memory to assisted floors. And per diems not being able to answer my questions about my husband.

For how tough this decision was for my in laws to adjust to this type of change. They are so grateful that they at least tried it out. It may not work for everyone but I have seen my loved ones flourish in this community. My father in law tells me all of the time how he does not have to worry about anything and it is wonderful. My mother in law thought this was the worst thing and now she goes to yoga work out classes and more things that we thought she would never participate in.

Armbrook Village provided high quality care to my mother who spent 2 weeks in respite after being discharged from a rehab setting. All the staff were very pleasant, cooperative and patient in helping my mother. I choose this facility for their reputable care of their residents and would high recommend Armbrook Village to those seeking an ALF setting.

Response from Armbrook Village
November 21, 2019Thank you for your review! Our short-term Respite Stay Program is a perfect choice for families following discharge from a hospital or rehab center when a senior is not quite ready to be home alone, when they need a little more time in a supportive environment to recuperate and do their out-patient rehab. In a Respite Stay seniors pay one all-inclusive daily fee for a private furnished apartment, personal care, all meals, and access to our community's amenities and social activities. Many seniors over the years have also used our short-term stay program to live in our community for a short while to make sure it's the right choice for them before they make a permanent move to a new home.
My family did a lot of research and a few visits with Mom trying to find the right place for Mom. We really found the perfect place for her when we visited Armbrook Village in Westfield. She has now been there a month and a half and Mom has adjusted beautifully and is so happy at Armbrook. It truly is an amazing place. I can't believe how happy everyone there is from senior residents to all their staff and Dr. [name removed] who sees patients in their rooms. Even employees who come in and hang pictures or set up her TV just love Armbrook. The young staff hustle about the dining room aware of who needs help deciding what to order, who they should offer to have their meat cut for them, etc. Residents approach both myself and my Mom inquiring on how she is adjusting and offer suggestions such as "I think she will like exercise class" or just complimenting her sweater, her sneakers or otherwise welcoming her to the community. I have caught myself wondering how all the residents could be so happy - do they screen out grouchy or negative clients? Then I realize it is just that they alleviate the stress of aging and memory loss by providing residents with what they need. They go above and beyond planning activities that will be meaningful, fun and enriching. I was fighting back tears when my Mom said to me "Everyone is so nice here, some people need more than me and some need less, but we are all here getting what we need". As she visited other places, she always looked at residents hoping to feel many people were more at her level of need and she truly finds that at Armbrook. She gets 3 meals a day which not only alleviates the stress of meal prep and shopping, but also provides built-in social opportunity. Mom enjoys the meals and that she can make choices every day. We are so happy she has adjusted so nicely to the community at Armbrook. Come in and visit and you will experience a very happy place with great programming and options for residents.

Response from Armbrook Village
November 21, 2019Thank you so much for your heartfelt review. Your deep sense of relief and appreciation for how your Mom is thriving at our community shines through. I understand how gratifying it must have been for you when your Mom told you that she felt that her needs were being met, and everyone was so nice here. I know by "everyone" that she meant, not only our staff, but also her fellow residents who bond together and support each other. Clearly she, and you, feel that she is in the right place being supported and cherished for the wonderful person she is!
If you are looking for a place for a loved one with dementia, Armbrook Village’s “Connected Life” program is very much worth considering. The Connected Life program was set up to facilitate well organized shared experiences for its members in day-to-day activities. The first thing you will notice is how effectively program leaders treat group members as the adults they are and are entitled to be treated. [name removed] (Program Director) and [name removed] run the program. They have an intuitive way of choreographing program components so that the member’s day is well planned, but respectful of the individual’s need for occasional quiet time. You will also notice that group members appear to be enjoying what they are doing. This is no accident. They are. The program consistently lets group members feel successful in what they do. They go from one scheduled segment of the day to another with positive feelings about what they have been able to do. They also are led to have positive feelings about themselves and others in the group. The program name itself – “connected” – tells the story. Group members end up connected to the group and become bonded to each other, while at the same time feeling integrated into the larger life of Armbrook Village and other residents who are not part of the group itself. The program may not be for everyone; but if you feel that this brief description might possibly be a good fit for your loved one, it’s definitely a place to explore.

Response from Armbrook Village
October 8, 2019Thank you! You just explained our ConnectedLIFE Program so clearly. We could only imagine when we first created this program that it would turn into something so positive and impactful for seniors with early memory loss (Mild Cognitive Impairment) living in our assisted living community. With the right associates in place to run the program, a wonderful group of residents who remain positive despite their memory loss and who care deeply for others in their group, and families like you who support us every step of the way, it is indeed a very successful endeavor. It feels good knowing we are making a difference for individuals living with early, yet advancing, dementia - a group that often pulls back from engaging in social activities, who often become very isolated living at home alone, and who tend to self-isolate even when living within a traditional assisted living community.
We looked very carefully at many sites for my mom as it became clear Alzheimers was setting in. Our entire family is so happy that we found and chose Armbrook. Their super-friendly, family-like feel is wonderful, the programming is ideal for my mom - keeping her engaged in cheerful, engaging activities, and their unending positivity maintains her dignity as her mental control fades. It's been simply wonderful.

Response from Armbrook Village
October 4, 2019Thank you so much for your review! We agree that our innovative programming has done wonders for your Mom. It's a tough road for the person with Alzheimer's (and the people who love them) as they lose cognitive abilities and memory over time. We believe that each person living with Alzheimer's should be recognized and celebrated as a person worthy of dignity and respect, and not be defined by their diagnosis. So it is heartwarming to us that you feel your Mom's dignity is being maintained in a positive supportive home.
Moving our mom here to Armbrook village turned out to be the best move we could have made. They take very good care of her and all the staff is on top of her needs and well fair. Keeping her safe, cared for and happy. the dementia memory support program keeps mom stimulated and engaged. We are very very happy with all aspects of Armbrook village Westfield. If your unsure where to go with your aging loved one, visit Armbrook village and see for yourself.

October 4, 2019We are so glad your Mom is thriving in our Compass Neighborhood. It's music to my ears that you see your Mom stimulated and engaged. That's exactly what our Compass program is designed to do -- it's based on research that socialization, diet, exercise and tailored programming can play a major role in the management of dementia causing diseases, and may actually be more effective in treating the symptoms of dementia than current medications. It's gratifying to see your Mom benefitting from our Compass approach.
My mom has lived at Armbrook Village in the Compass Memory Care area. I could not have found a more perfect place for her to live. She is happy there and the programs are well suited for her. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and caring. I would not hesitate telling anyone to stop by and take a tour.

October 4, 2019Thank you for your kind words and for encouraging people to take a tour of our Compass Memory Support Neighborhood. It's very hard on families when a loved one is declining due to a dementia causing disease, such as Alzheimer's. Very often families assume their Mom or Dad would do best staying at home in familiar surroundings, but I would encourage them to check out a memory support program such as ours to see firsthand what a supportive environment, caring staff, opportunities to socialize with peers, and innovative engaging daily programming can do for them!
$4525/mo; studio and 1 bdrm apts; one time $1500 community fee; optional services additional cost (medication mgt, laundry svs, guest meals, salon, telephone, cable and internet) PACE accepted but not Medicaid/MassHealth

My mom is having a great time here and she loves it. They were the best fit because It was the only place that could take a dog, She did not want to get rid of her dog. They had a 1st floor apartment available to take her dog out. From what we have tried the meals are really good. The staff are very friendly. Activities are planned out and the community is kept clean. All is good for her.

My mother is doing the best that she can on making the adjustment into this community. the staff are very friendly and have been attentive to my loved ones needs. She said there could be a little improvement on the food they serve. It is a mediatrian diet so its a little different then what she is used to with the different spices and flavors.
