The majority of the staff genuinely care about the residents. Communication needs improvement, and they are often short-staffed on weekends. Be vigilant with communication, especially about medications.

My mom passed away in May. I loved the on floor staff that worked with her daily and the receptionist and cooks. The administration was disorganized. My biggest complaint would be the administration. I believe the management had recently changed hands and they were not functioning well when my mom was there. There was no functioning call button in the room for my mom to push for help. There was poor communication between the staff and the administrators which resulted in my mom not getting the care she required after a fall. Worst of all because of their disorganization some staff was not aware that she was on hospice and so her care was not coordinated with Health Partners. That said, the PCAs were amazing and caring people, doing their best in a tough situation. Hopefully things have gotten better as the new administration gets more experience. It is a nice building in a great location with lots of caring staff.

The direct care staff were very kind. However, the head nurse and the director made many mistakes with medication and following hospice directives. At one point, they sent my mom (who had dementia) off in an ambulance to a hospital that was not in the hospice network after a fall. The hospice directive was to always call them and the family in an instance like this. This was completely ignored. My mom had no idea what was happening and was unable to advocate for herself. This trip to the hospital resulted in her losing her hospice services because she was moved out of her network. It took a lot of work to get her hospice services reinstated and this work was done by the hospice providers, not the Alton management. Additionally, my mom did not have a working call button in her room for several months- we asked to have it fixed MANY times - they kept blaming outside technology and told us that a call button was not necessary because She "would not remember to use it anyway" Each time there was a problem, they blamed the direct care staff but when I asked to see the communication logs, none of the information was there for the staff to read. The communication was horrible. The food was extremely processed and institutional and there were never fresh fruits or vegetables. Many of her personal belongings disappeared because of general lack of organization. We were with my mom everyday and saw an overall pattern of these type of instances.

Well-trained, efficient staff in a well-maintained facility. The care (medical attention, attention to resident needs, etc.) seems quite good (no smells, no trash lying around, etc.). Security for wandering patients is good. The staff at the reception desk are friendly and knowledgeable. The staff treat the residents respectfully. I have found working with the nurse manager to be great -- she keeps me up to date on my brother-in-law's needs in a timely fashion.

All 5s except value for cost. I understand it is very expensive to run a senior living center, but still the amount of money is exorbitant. I do think the staff there are doing an excellent job, however, for a majority of them, English is their second language, and it can be very difficult to understand them. The residence there have a difficult time knowing what they are saying as well.

My Mom lived at The Alton for about six years. It was a wonderful, family-like atmosphere the suited her needs. The care she received was well above average. The social activities were her favorites! I thank each and every staff member for the cares that my Mom received. I have and will always recommend The Alton Memory Care.

We needed memory care for my loved one, and independent living for his companion. So far it's worked out perfectly.I would recommend, depending on the trajectory of their loved one.

They have been friendly and accommodating always. And they've been respectful and kind to my mom. I think staff shortages everywhere makes it difficult to know what to expect in terms of levels of care that we are paying for (consistency in laundry, cuing for personal hygiene, etc.) Some of the ambiguity is probably my fault, too, for not inquiring more regularly. Also, last year, two friends visited the Alton looking for a residence for their relatives, and they were impressed with the categories you mentioned. It is the best place for my mom.

I do feel it is a bit pricey for the required 2 year private pay. However, our brother-in-law seems quite happy there. The rooms are pretty comparable to other facilities-- maybe 170 square feet. 15x15 including the bathroom. His room overlooks a parking area at the entrance. Bathroom is fine. Shared lounge areas with snacks.

They are trying with the activities, and could probably do more in that department. It's very expensive, but my loved one is in really good hands. I feel my loved one is really safe. It was the perfcet place and I would reccommend The Alton. It's a really good place. I am really pleased with everyone.

Overall the community is very clean, but the individual house keeping could use some improvements - we are finding ourselves having to remind them to help clean up our loved ones space. Most of the staff members are very friendly and we really do like that it is solely dedicated to memory care - we think that is of extreme importance

I toured The Alton Memory Care and it was a nice place. We chose another community because The Alton just couldn't accommodate my loved ones level of care.
This community clearly had been in business for a long time. They were very aware and the resources that they had to offer were great. This community was a high rise and it was seven floors and I did not feel like this would be the community for my loved one. The activities were spot on and they had in house physicians also for the residents.
We have enjoyed this community much better then our loved ones previous one, we love The Alton. We have not eaten the meals there ourselves but our loved one has not complained so we assume they are good. She really like participating in the board games, playing cards and doing puzzles.

I toured this facility while looking for a place for my Mother. It is a really nice community; however, it was a lot bigger of a building than the other places we looked at. All of the staff members here were really nice and it seems like a fancy facility. The marketing director who gave us the tour was friendly and knowledgeable. I would recommend other families to tour this facility.

We toured this community and the staff was nice and helpful and they answered all of my questions. They introduced us to some of the residents. This was a bigger community. It was a hard decision at the time but this wasn't the right fit for my husband. They offer lots of activities for a more independent person. It was nice and clean.

So far I'am reasonably satisfied with the care my wife is receiving here in this facility. She is getting along pretty well since her move to this community. They have a very good staff, and I know she is in good hands. They have been friendly when I visit, and helpful when needed. Her room, and the community are well-kept whenever I visit. The experience is going well so far for us in this community, and I think this is a community I would recommend.

A Place for Mom has scored Alton Global Health Link 8.8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
