Paquette Homestead in Apalachin, NY

We placed mom in the Paquette house in 2010 because she had dementia and we could no longer give her the daily care that she required. We were happily surprised to see what a nice house and neighborhood she was in. Since we live in Apalachin, a visit was only a few minutes away. At first mom didn't want to have anything to do with living there even though she was incapable of living alone. After several weeks, she began to accept the Paquette house as her home and the people as her friends. She stayed there for 3.5 years, until her death, and often said how well she was treated. It was a relief to us to have the assurance that mom was getting her medications on schedule and eating well. We found Connie Barton easy to get along with and sympathetic to our needs. I would, and do, recommend the Homesteads to anyone seeking assisted living.

This was a great community for my loved one. There were only 4 residents in the community. It felt like a family atmosphere. There were a lot of caregivers available to care for the residents. The meals were home cooked, and they tried to accommodate my loved one's meals requests. The staff were patient with our loved one and making our loved comfortable. The staff communication with the family was wonderful. They kept us updated about any concerns or changes about our loved one.

A lot of the times my mother is just sitting there in front of the TV and not doing anything, so I think they need to up their activities. They have been good with communicating though and letting me know if she needs anything. I would just like to see her have a little more interaction.

What are care homes?

Residential care homes are houses in residential neighborhoods that are equipped, adapted, and staffed to care for a small number of residents, usually between two and 10. Like assisted living communities, staff at care homes typically help residents with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, and medication management. Although residential care homes vary significantly depending on the community, services usually include:

  • Mobility assistance
  • Nutritious meals
  • Social activities and outings
