About the facility The Homestead/ Barton FTHA

Along the Susquehanna River in the quiet town of Apalachin, New York, your loved one can experience family-style senior living at The Homesteads/Barton FTHA, an intimate care home with about six residents. You’ll feel a difference compared to larger senior living communities because of the high staff-to-resident ratio and homelike atmosphere. The colonial-style home is just down the street from favorite hometown restaurants, shops, and the local library. The Waterman Conservation Education Center, including a museum and hiking trails, is only minutes away.

The Homesteads/Barton FTHA offers services similar to a larger assisted living and memory care community. Your loved one can get help with activities of daily living such as bathing, grooming, and medication management. They’ll enjoy the outdoors while spending time on the deck or secured yard. Three homemade meals with a selection of desserts are served up daily, plus a couple of snacks.

For residents with dementia, security alarms on exterior help ensure they remain safe. Other amenities include transportation on request, an emergency call system, and laundry and housekeeping services.

The care home features furnished semi-private, private rooms, or private rooms with a half bath.

A True Family Atmosphere

The Homesteads is great. The Homesteads is truly a 'family' atmosphere and Dad is doing much better there than in a traditional nursing home setting. Although we don't really have anywhere else to compare it to. Dad has settled in nicely and we are confident that he is safe and well taken care of.

Best Place for Mom

This was a great community for my loved one. There were only 4 residents in the community. It felt like a family atmosphere. There were a lot of caregivers available to care for the residents. The meals were home cooked, and they tried to accommodate my loved one's meals requests. The staff were patient with our loved one and making our loved comfortable. The staff communication with the family was wonderful. They kept us updated about any concerns or changes about our loved one.

There is no place like home

The Homesteads owns and operates 4 separate homes. Each home has their own name. My mother lives at one of these homes and then there are 3 others with their own staff. It is all family run and it is amazing. they have been in business for 20 years and they are very close knit. Their ratio is one caretaker to 4 residents, never lower but might even be higher on some days according to needs. I would give them much higher than a 5 if I could.

Definitely a place for mom - the best place ever

They do a really good job with keeping the community clean. The staff is wonderful. The care is excellent. My mother can be aggressive at times as a result of her condition. The care giving staff does a great job of handling her when needed. At her previous community, they were unable to help her through her aggressive episodes and as a result, didn't do well with her care. The staff at The Homestead has been great and treat her very well. Both my mother and I are very happy with the community and I cannot say enough good things about them. The owner who has had the business for over 30 years has a lot of experience and that is reflected in the care. They always call if there is ever an issue. It is a wonderful place. They even send me pictures of my mother just to show me how happy she is! They also have dogs to keep the residents company. Would highly recommend The Homestead to anyone!

Warm and loving

Three years ago when it became apparent that my mother could no longer live alone, I started a search for placement for her. The Homesteads immediately came up. After extensive research, I called and met with [removed], the owner. She is a warm and caring woman who, because of 25 years of experience, knew exactly what my family and I were going through. After touring the home, meeting the staff, and experiencing the warm, family environment we decided to place mom there! She is still there receiving wonderful care and is happy, healthy and safe! I recommend them highly!

Great Tour!!

I had a great tour of this community and was pleased with how welcoming the staff where to my loved one and I. They had a great floor plan that was east for my loved one to navigate through with lots of great amenities available to all of the residents. Overall it was more of a location issue for my my family and I.

A true home

My mom was a resident here for over 6 years. To say she was a "resident" is an understatement. The Homesteads are truly a HOME for your family. My mom and every other resident were treated like family and taken care of with love, respect and grace. From the time we moved her there when she was in early onset Alzheimers to the day she passed away at the Barton house - all of her needs were taken care of to a phenomenal degree. I am a health care worker myself (physical therapist) and I hold a high bar what is involved in quality care in the care of my mom ( and others). I truly wish there was a house like this in every community for people to take care of their loved ones.

My grandmother has been a long-term resident here and I visit these homes regularly as I play the piano for the residents. The care-givers tend to the residents with genuine respect and kindness; and with great attention to the unique, personal care that each resident needs.

Competent, Safe, Kind, Attentive, Caring

I am so thankful for The Homestead. In my case, my mom lived at the Barton home. I saw my mom and other residents being treated with respect, love, and great care. I was amazed at the ability of the owner and staff to be able to accommodate the variety of needs, illnesses, and levels of care of the residents. I respected and loved the owners, managers, and every day caregivers. It was obvious that the owners and managers required a high level of care, competence, and kindness from the hands-on caregivers. At several times, the attention given my mom was above and beyond; and I believe it was more than mom would have received at larger care facilities. The facility itself was well kept, attractive, and up to date. Forever, Thank you, Connie and Staff!
