I love Golden Care but having issue with A Place for Mom. Golden Care is great and I'm pleased, but I went on my own to the facility, not through A Place for Mom.

St. Francis Manor I in San Francisco, CA
4.8 / 5.0

My mother was recently there for the last two months of her life. She was not easy to care for, and I am eternally grateful to [name removed] and her staff for the loving, devoted and professional care that she got. They were very flexible with family preferences. [name removed] was also a great resource on palliative and hospice care options in the City. This home is a godsend.

Family Affair Care Home in San Bruno, CA
3.9 / 5.0

We chose this facility because of what they said they were offering for the price and they sounded like they could meet the needs of our loved one. The on-boarding process with Family Affair Care Home was great. Communication has been a challenge at times, this has been an issue since we need to be involved in our loved ones care. I think it is really important for you to have everything in writing as far as the cost agreement so you know exactly what you will be paying. I would tell others looking to physically go and tour and ask a lot of questions, especially who your main point of contact will be. It can be successful as long as you are clear from the start. The staff do the best that they can, but I think they need better support from the owner.

Discover the many ways to pay for senior living

Planning ahead can better position you to make good choices for your loved one’s care in the future. But if your aging family member needs care now, there are ways to finance the cost of long-term care through a combination of approaches.

What are care homes?

Residential care homes are houses in residential neighborhoods that are equipped, adapted, and staffed to care for a small number of residents, usually between two and 10. Like assisted living communities, staff at care homes typically help residents with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, and medication management. Although residential care homes vary significantly depending on the community, services usually include:

  • Help with personal care
  • Medication management
  • Mobility assistance
  • Nutritious meals
  • Social activities and outings
  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry

This picturesque, bayside Marin County town offers all the resources and conveniences of a modern city — like shopping and dining options, health care facilities, and transportation — along with one-of-a-kind museums and recreational areas that allow residents to absorb the surrounding Northern California landscape. Some of San Rafael’s most popular destinations include the Smith Rafael Film Center, the Museum of International Propaganda, and McNears Beach County Park.

In San Rafael, residential care homes — sometimes called care homes, board and care homes, group homes, or personal care homes — are often houses in residential neighborhoods that are adapted, equipped, and staffed to care for a small number of residents, usually 10 or less. Similar to assisted living but in a smaller, more residential setting, these homes provide supervision, organized events, and assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs). This means care homes can help with everyday routines but typically do not provide 24-hour skilled nursing assistance.

Cost of Care Homes in San Rafael, CA

The median monthly cost of a room in a care home in 2019 was about $3,800 in San Rafael, $6,500 in the metropolitan area, and $3,500 in the state of California. However, the cost of living in a care home depends largely on location. Since the homes are private residences, costs are tied to real estate value and therefore may vary greatly.
