I'd say it is a good place but expensive. We picked this community because of the proximity. The interaction/communication with the staff has been good.

Parkside at Glenwood in Erie, PA
4.0 / 5.0

The staffing is not allowed to help with elderly individuals that have fallen down or tripped. That was one big reason why we DID place our parents there, not spelled out clearly in the beginning. Now we are going to look at other facilities. I would still recommend them. individuals going down this road need to pay close attention to what services are actually available and what the customer is paying for.

The Residence at Presque Isle Bay in Erie, PA
4.9 / 5.0

My 4 for cleanliness is because my mom was in memory care--probably a little harder to keep as nice as the rest of the building The staff were phenomenal--everyone. My mom was in the hospital for an injury & returned back to The Residence on hospice. When I came back to her room the first time after having been at the hospital with her for a few days, I wept: the staff had cleaned her room and arranged it perfectly for her return. She died a few days later. Her care & the care extended to me & my family during her last days was beautiful I am so thankful for her life there, and her death there.

How people pay for assisted living in Erie

A clear understanding of payment options for assisted living in the Erie area is crucial, as programs such as Medicaid and Medicare do not cover the custodial costs. The following section will delve into different payment options, including private pay methods, VA benefits, Medicaid, and Medicare.

Private pay methods

Depending on the specific plan, long-term care insurance can cover assisted living costs. Seniors often need to explore alternative sources to fund their housing expenses. Private pay options encompass various income sources that seniors can tap into, such as personal savings, Social Security benefits, pensions, and investment returns. Additionally, the following options can be considered as part of private payment methods to cover the cost of Erie assisted living:

Understand Pennsylvania laws and regulations for assisted living facilities

Pennsylvania assisted living residences (ALRs) are regulated and licensed by the state’s Department of Human Services. These ALRs fall within the broader category of personal care homes, which encompass residences that offer shelter, meals, supervision, and aid with personal care, particularly for elderly individuals. However, ALRs offer more services including housekeeping and laundry, medication administration, transportation, round-the-clock supervision, basic cognitive support services, and additional health care services.

Inspections for these facilities are conducted annually without prior notice, and additional checks may be carried out as determined by the Department of Human Services. During these inspections, the facility, its records, and individuals such as residents, families, and staff are all considered during the inspection process.

The inspections have certain requirements that must be met to pass, including the presence of a licensed nurse available either on-site or on-call at all times. Furthermore, personnel directly involved in resident care must undergo training and successfully pass a competency test related to providing Activities of Daily Living (ADL) services. Additionally, staff training plans must be created annually and scheduled accordingly. Each resident should also have an individualized assessment and support plan that explains the services and assistance they require and how they will receive that help.

In the Department of Human Services Provider Directory, seniors and their families can discover licensed facilities, while access to inspection information can be obtained through personal care home reports. Personal care homes are any residences that provide shelter, food, supervision, and assistance with personal care, especially for older people. These homes include ALRs. For a comprehensive understanding of inspection procedures and more, a regulatory compliance guide is available, providing a detailed account of the relevant guidelines and protocols.

These residences are the same as personal care homes (which are defined as assisting seniors with shelter, meals, supervision, and personal care) but with additional services. Those additional services include round-the-clock supervision, housekeeping and laundry, transportation, medication administration, basic cognitive support services, and additional health care assistance. Care is personalized to individual needs, whether that’s providing help with bathing and dressing or managing medication and ensuring staff is on hand to guarantee general well-being. With Lake Erie on the horizon, Erie remains a tranquil location for seniors.
