Cutler Bay Village in Miami, FL
5.0

During our loved ones stay of [dates removed] we were very happy with our experience. The owner [name removed] was very thorough and detailed with things they do and how things are ran. During the covid spikes and lockdowns he was very honest and straight forward with the families. This especially helped make our transition much easier especially from coming out of state. If we had to do it all over again we would pick Cutler Bay. It is very affordable - not the lowest but not the highest. The staff are great.

When I was in need of a short stay for my spouse, we used Heart-to- Heart. From the initial point of contact to visiting the home, I knew this was the right place. The staff are professional, friendly and caring. As well as providing a home friendly, clean environment, with home cooked meals. Thank you Heart-to-Heart for being there for us at a time when we needed assistance the most.

Colonial at Fort Lauderdale in Lauderhill, FL

We chose this facility because i felt it was a homey place, it did not feel cold and institutionalized. My favorite part about this facility is the people there. The workers are very outgoing and will help in anyway they can. My mom has no complaints about the food, I have never eaten there before, but the coffee is very good. The first room my mom was in was small but nice, now the room she is in is much bigger and brighter. I would definitely recommend this facility.

Discover the many ways to pay for senior living

Planning ahead can better position you to make good choices for your loved one’s care in the future. But if your aging family member needs care now, there are ways to finance the cost of long-term care through a combination of approaches.

What is assisted living?

Assisted living is long-term care for seniors who are generally active and independent, but who require increased supervision and help with some daily tasks. Staff can assist residents with activities of daily living like dressing, bathing, and medication management. Assisted living is also a good option for seniors seeking more socialization. Services and amenities in assisted living facilities often include:

  • Housekeeping
  • Nutritious meals and snacks
  • Help with personal care
  • Laundry
  • Social activities and outings
  • 24-hour emergency response

Assisted Living in Hialeah Gardens, FL

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living communities offer housing and services to seniors who want some support with day-by-day tasks like taking medications, preparing meals and keeping up with housecleaning. Assisted living communities come in all shapes and sizes, so touring them may be the most effective way to figure out which one is most beneficial for you personally or your loved one.

What Services Are Offered in Assisted Living?

Nobody assisted living community is like another. At the very least, assisted living provides independently minded seniors meals and snacks, help with things like showering and dressing, and a wide variety of activities such as health and wellness programs, cultural events, excursions plus much more, all in a safe and sound environment with people their peers.

If you are considering assisted living, you ve probably come across the acronym ADLs, which means the Activities of Daily Living. These consist of:

  • Bathing and showering
  • Toileting
  • Dressing
  • Feeding (but not meal planning)
  • Continence
  • Functional mobility, which include getting in and out of a bed or chair

Developed in the 1950s, ADLs evaluate a person’s general health and function. In general, older adults who can manage ADLs on their own but who are thinking about a move to senior living may be better prospects for independent living. If you have questions about what care type may be the best fit for your family member, email A Place for Mom. Our Senior Living Advisors can answer any queries you might have about assisted living, independent living, memory care, life plan communities and more.

Assisted Living Vs. Nursing Homes

The term ‘‚¬Assisted Living was initially found in the 1980s to describe a innovative kind of residential living for old adults that was significantly different from more traditional nursing home designs. Assisted living is created for individuals who want some support with day to day activities but who still would like level of autonomy and who wish to reside in an apartment-like environment like a studio or a one-bedroom apartment. Many assisted living communities provide a complete schedule of activities and events and provide multiple meal choices to cater to varied tastes and preferences, including special eating plans and restaurant-style options. Small pets are often allowed.

In contrast, the sign of nursing homes is that they provide skilled nursing care. They are designed to meet the needs of seniors and others who have medical conditions that need to have 24×7 medical assistance. Meals are usually served in a central dining hall and residents reside in private or shared bedrooms. Some nursing homes also include short-term rehabilitative care. Nursing homes today are also called convalescent care centers, nursing centers, skilled nursing communities and long-term care communities. Because they provide more help and support, nursing homes are more expensive than assisted living communities.

Both skilled nursing and assisted living communities may offer memory care, which is specialized support for people coping with cognitive impairment. In fact, 40% of the people who reside in the state of FL are living with some type of dementia, according to the National Center for Assisted Living. In general, people living with the initial stages of Alzheimer s or dementia are greatest supported by assisted living communities while people living with later levels of Alzheimer’s require the medical care of a nursing home.

What Is Assisted Living Like?

Whilst every community is usually unique, here are some attributes that a lot of assisted living communities share:

  • They offer assorted levels of care, sometimes at varied prices.
  • They offer different living choices, from studios to one-bedroom flats.
  • Many permit residents to bring their personal household pets, including birds, cats and in some cases little dogs.
  • They cater to differing backgrounds, customs and interests. Some communities, for example, are faith-based, while others are multi-lingual, with activities and dining choices to complement. Still more are made for retired armed service or college alumni and sometimes are even located on or near university campuses.
  • They could offer accommodations for partners as well as individuals.
  • They range in proportions. Some communities have only 20 residents, while some many have significantly more than 200.

With so many options to choose from, choosing the best place can feel overpowering. Our Senior Living Advisors can help. They live in the communities they serve. When you talk to a Senior Living Advisor, he or she will ask a few pre-determined questions to better learn what you are interested in, what your budget is and what unique wants your family member may have. Best of all their advice is free!

When Is It Time to Consider Assisted Living?

In the event you are asking this question, chances are good that it s time you find out more about senior living. Below are a few other hints that assisted living might be ideal for both your loved one and your family:

  • You are concerned for your loved one s basic safety.
  • You are worried they aren’t eating correctly.
  • You get worried about them going out of the house by themselves.
  • You notice they are spending less time with friends and family.
  • You get a phone call or email from a next door neighbor who’s worried about them.
  • You discover that your family member may have difficulty remembering people s names or using a familiar technology like their mobile phone or TV remote.

If these or a variety of other signs are bothering you, do something. Get in touch with A Place for Mom and talk to a Senior Living Advisor today. They are able to answer your questions and assist you to find out next steps. On top of that, their experience is free of charge!

Assisted Living Inspections and Ratings

FL provides families with exceptional usage of its assisted living inspection and ratings records. Based on our state-by-state review of state records , FL s assisted living regulation and inspection program is among the most transparent in the country. To find the records of an assisted living community in the greater Hialeah Gardens area, visit the FloridaHealthFinder.gov site and search by service type to get inspection reviews, licensure data, penalties and actions assessed against the community, option of nursing staff, an emergency power plan overview and more.

The state of FL mandates that new assisted living residents have a medical evaluation within 30 days of move-in to evaluate an individualized care strategy. The state also mandates a baseline number of weekly staff member hours in line with the number of individuals who live in a community to make sure care plans will be accommodated.

10 Things to Look For When Touring an Assisted Living community

The simplest way to find out if an assisted living community is right for your family member is to tour one — or better yet, four or five of them! Here are a few factors to pay attention to when you visit:

  1. Does the personnel connect to the residents?
  2. Is the home clean, odor-free and well looked after?
  3. Is there a procedure in place for evaluating the requirements of a new resident?
  4. Can residents request transport if they require it?
  5. Are the personnel professional and polite?
  6. Are there particular visiting times or are family and friends welcome at any time?
  7. Will each resident have a care plan set up?
  8. What happens if a resident s requirements change?
  9. Is there a crisis program in place in the event of a natural or manmade disaster?
  10. Do the individuals who live there remind you of your loved one?

For more tips on what to look for while visiting an assisted living community, see our Planning and Advice webpages.

How to Pay for Senior Living In Hialeah Gardens, FL

How to finance assisted living is one of the most typical questions families have if they meet with one of our Senior Living Advisors. Here are a few of the most common funding sources for senior living:

  • Personal income or savings. If a senior will not have ample funds saved to pay for long-term care, it s common for families to pool funds to make up the difference.
  • Home equity. Often, seniors sell their homes to fund senior living. Occasionally, a bridge loan could be offered to help cover the expense of moving while the home is prepared for sale.
  • Long-term care insurance. This unique kind of insurance is made to include senior care expenses. Some policies might cover various other expenditures that can be incurred during the transition to assisted living, such as hiring a case manager or care coordinator.
  • Veterans benefits. Many seniors have served in the armed service and may be eligible for help and support. Because many benefits go untouched, it s worthwhile to check to see if your loved one or his or her spouse may qualify. To find out more, go to va.gov or see our Guide to VA Benefits and Long-Term Care for additional information.
  • Sale of a life insurance policy. There are several ways to use life insurance to finance senior living determined by the kind of policy you hold. Consult a life insurance or economic counselor to understand about if this option might work for your situation.

Many households expect that Medicare can help pay for assisted living, but it really can only cover short-term care. For more information, head to Medicare’s site.

Understanding Assisted Living Costs

Assisted living costs vary broadly from community to community, so that it pays to perform your research. Here are a few items that may have an effect on how much you spend:

  • Type of residence
  • Size of house (studio, one- or two-bedroom house)
  • Types of solutions needed
  • Geographical area
  • Location of the community
  • Level of luxury

Assisted living communities often charge a set fee that addresses many basic solutions, with additional charges added on for particular services. Various other communities will charge a fee for each individual service, referred to as a la carte payment, so that residents pay just for the support they make use of. Typically, the monthly base cost includes only rent and meals, with care billed separately. Entrance fees and deposits are also often required. Charges and rates can vary by community, therefore it s necessary to question communities you are researching about their costs and products and services.

For more information about assisted living costs and charge structures, get in touch with a Senior Living Advisor at A Place for Mom.
