Memory Care
Before I retired seven years ago, I was in healthcare administration in the Kilmarnock community, and Commonwealth has always had a good reputation. I did look into several agencies, and came in to take the tour at Commonwealth and liked what I saw. It was very clean, and there was a home atmosphere about it that I liked very much. Everybody was very friendly. It just looked like a place where my mother could feel comfortable. My mom is a bit of a loner, but she has made friends here. Some of the staff here have really taken her under their wing. I think the interpersonal relationships she’s been able to foster have helped her tremendously. That goes from administration right on down to the aids, everybody seems to try their best. Things aren’t always perfect and they won’t be anywhere, but they do the very best they can to meet her needs. They really try to make her feel like she is the most important. It happens consistently when I see people stop what they’re doing to either take her back to her room or to get her something she is asking for.
With our loved one have Alzheimer's the staff here have been very good with him, truly they have been wonderful to him as well as our family. They have really good activities there - they had a Christmas holiday party and are throwing a Valentine's Day party as well. They have even taken our loved one and other residents out on their van for a day trip. We have had a few lunch meals together and they are really good.
They kept changing the way they did the laundry, which was fine. But 50% of my loved one's clothes just disappeared, even after we tagged them. The food was not very good here. And they really didn't have much meal planning for you if you had needs or preferences off the main stream. I could see they had a lot of activities, but my loved one didn't participate. The management was very good. If you had an ear to management, they would help you out a lot. It's not like they ignored you. For instance, I wanted to put cameras in my loved one's room, and they were very open to that and helped me to get that achieved. Overall, after looking at several places, I'm glad I chose them. The marketing director was very supportive from the beginning to the end. I could run questions by her, and she was very helpful. We ended up needing hospice care, and they helped get that set up. The hospice service they recommend there was excellent. I got to talk to a chaplain once a week, and the home office would call me once a week. The hospice nurse was outstanding. It was like having a sister there.
