Nursing Homes

A nursing home is a facility that houses two or more seniors who are not related by blood or by marriage to the administrator. This type of establishment offers its occupants around-the-clock care administered by registered nurses. These nurses provide maintenance, personal care and other health related services for seniors who cannot care for themselves.

This type of facility is a familiar and easy care alternative for individuals 65 years or older, however nursing homes will often allow access to individuals 55 and greater which is unusual for other senior care types. There are some services that may come at a cost to residents which can include personal comfort items, specially prepared food, and special care services not included in the facility’s Medicaid payment. Nursing homes are required to provide nursing and related services, a professionallly directed program of activities, routine personal hygiene items, and medically-related social services to residents. As a resident of a nursing home, you can expect the right to get proper privacy, property, and living arrangements, get proper medical care, participate in activities, and to manage your money. A large number of nursing home residents are individuals who experience difficulty with hearing and vision, have a physical or mental disability, have incontinence issues, or require assistance with daily tasks such as walking. The most frequent mental disease effecting residents of nursing homes is dementia, which can cloud their and familiarity with their surroundings, memory function, and decision making capacities.
