Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

Bradenton is located on the west coast of Florida, just 8 miles east of the white sandy beaches of Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key. The city is also home to the Bradenton Blues Festival, proving it can stay cool. Bradenton was established in 1842 and was originally spelled “Braidentown,” but thanks to a spelling error when applying for a post office in 1878, became amended to “Bradentown.” The city took the name of Dr. Joseph Braden, whose nearby fort-like house was a refuge for early settlers during the Seminole Wars. Though on the outside Bradenton might present itself as a beach town, beneath the surface is a varied cultural landscape.

Aside from its cultural offerings, Bradenton’s reputation as a beach town definitely holds water. The city’s coast along the Gulf of Mexico is lined by 6 islands, each with pristine beaches. Longboat Key, the longest of Bradenton’s island beaches, is a calmer beach with a relaxing atmosphere and tends to be less crowded than other options. Siesta Key is another island, which consists of multiple beaches. Its namesake beach is often regarded as one of the best beaches in the world. In Venice, a short trip south of the city, one can find Caspersen Beach. A great option if you don’t feel like trekking to an island, Caspersen Beach features hiking trails and boardwalks, and the nearby Brohard Paw Park – the only dog-friendly beach in Bradenton County.

Transportation

Bradenton features a helpful public bus system operated by Bradenton County Area Transit, or SCAT. These buses feature routes which cover a wide range of the city and run daily from roughly 5:30 am to 10:30pm. SCAT also runs the Siesta Key Breeze Trolley – a free, open-air trolley that runs along the beaches of Siesta Key and is in operation 365 days a year. Bradenton is not the most convenient city to rely on walking for accomplishing most daily tasks, but the pleasant Florida weather permits outdoor strolls to be a frequent possibility.
