Walker Place

The change in ownership has drastically changed the quality of communication and care in the facility. All original front office staff are gone and replaced w average staff.

The experience with them so far has been positive, caring and inviting! A great family oriented environment where everyone is friendly and supportive, leads to a community, family atmosphere. I picked this community because of the cleanliness and overall knowledge of how to support and help people with Alzheimer's/ dementia.

This community is very best! It’s homey, with great care and my family loves it there!!!! The attention to detail from care to food is above what we could hope for! The care team and management treat us like extended family and it shows!

The care and staff are outstanding there. The only two drawbacks are that they do not take a Medicaid waiver and they are on the high end of price. However, the quality of care is excellent.

The staff at Walker Place is exceptionally interactive with their residents. They also work very hard to help families with all that goes with caring for our parents. We visited other places , but after visiting Walker Place it was obvious that they were more caring and the facility was much cleaner. I would recommend this facility to other families looking.

They were very caring. You can tell they were not just doing a job. They were very genuine. They also always kept in contact with me about my mom. It was very clean, but a warm welcoming atmosphere.

Mother convalesced at Walker 4.5 years ago after a hip replacement. She told us then, when it is time, I want to come back to Walker. Mom is just short of 91, and decided it was time. We moved her in last week. I cannot say enough about the overall experience. Everyone on staff from the Executive Director to the Community Relations Manager, Care Services Manager, Activities Director, maintenance, chefs, nursing and cleaning staff have welcomed us with open arms. The facility is clean and inviting. We know that Mom is safe and happy in her new home. Thank you to all at Walker for helping make this transition a pleasant and positive experience.

Our loved one was only there for a month but we had such a great experience - right when we saw Walker Place we knew this was the community for her. The cleanliness and personnel just really stood out to us. She rally enjoyed the meal and dining service and was just starting to get involved with the activities. Based on the experience we had we would recommend Walker Place to other families.

We chose Walker Place mainly because when I was state inspector I had inspected the place and knew quality when I saw it. It is a very cozy and home like atmosphere. There is a courtyard in the middle of the facility and you can observe it from the common areas and dining room as well which is very nice. The food is excellent. If you have an elderly loved one who are worried about falling this would be the place for them because staff can easily see residents from where they are at in the facility. I would highly recommend Walker Place to others.

We really enjoy the family like atmosphere here at Walker Place community, they have 39 apartments which are not all full yet so we like the smaller scale of it. There are even some staff members here who have their own families living here. Everyone except for the maintenance guy has a CNA license or higher so anyone is able to help any resident in need. The meals are great, the chef is a retired chef from Florida so he makes everything from scratch and is just a great cook. You are able to pick your meals out just a few days in advance, they have a bunch of different options and if there is something there the residents do not like, they can ask the chef to make them something separately. We really like their laundry set up - they do not wash the residents clothes together, they just tag the washer and dryer with the residents name and room number - we like this process because we can avoid tagging all their items or worrying about things getting mixed up and lost. We have seen a few activities and we do know they have a ton to offer. They bring in outside musical entertainment, there is a resident who plays the piano and organ almost daily. They have in house church meetings and bible study classes provided by the residents to the other residents. They also have gardens in the courtyard at various heights so they can participate in that as they desire. They have washers, corn hold, balloon volleyball, and bingo. They also have this daily activity called "silver rollers" and that is for anyone who wants to volunteer to role up the napkins and silverware for the next meal time.

I was really pleased with Walker Place. We had a very positive experience. The staff was very caring and concerned, and they kept me updated on the situation. So I was very pleased.

My mother is very pleased with her move to Walker Place. Since moving in to Walker, she has made many friends, taken up new activities, and has seemed more cheerful about how she spends her time. Mother daily shares her experiences. She especially likes playing volleyball and singing with her close friend. I believe she has been surprised by how many activities the facility provides. From the first meeting with the Director, [name removed] to the others on the staff at Walker Place, I have been impressed. My mother frequently comments on the kindness and helpfulness of the workers.

My Grandfather there and from jump this was the most kind caring staff around from start to finish we visited 10 other places in the area and non compare the staff is kind and the place feels like home!! The Food is amazing and the Place is completely clean!! it is by far the best facility in Shelbyville!

This is assisted living at its finest. You go from strangers to family in a day. I brought my aunt at the beginning of the pandemic, we were so scared. No need. They did and have continued to embrace us. From the staff to accomodations we could not ask for more. If you are looking for yourself or a loved one I highly recommend Walker Place. You and your family will be welcomed with open arms. You can even have your furry loved one with you. They have a couple of floor plans, from studio to one bedroom. If necessary I believe you can even have a roommate. They are roomy, of course you have your own walk in shower,large closet and plenty of room for furniture. If you prefer baths they have a wonderful walk in tub. Also plenty of activities,a lovely courtyard. Nice sized dining room. Oh and if you are inclined to have dinner out or have take out, there are restaurants right down street. Do not hesitate to make an appointment for a tour you will not be disappointed

The staff are caring, skilled and helpful.

My grandmother had 3 major hospitalizing falls while she was there, and 2 years in a row, in the winters of [date removed] this ended her up in a wheelchair both years with a broken pelvis twice (doctors xray proves) She went into the facility walking. The first one we realized she was being given some pain medicine she was not prescribed, which made her dizzy. The second fall set up pneumonia in her and took her on out. Its actually scary, the better insured a patient is.... because when there is an “accident” there (oopsie!) WALKER HOUSES PAYSCALE FOR THAT PATIENT/VICTIM GOES UP BY THOUSANDS! And when they actually did have to payback the extra month Grandma was paid-up through, after she died, they didn’t even get the money back to the beneficiary as they were told, but rather the temporary POA. But tisk tisk.... one should not expect such perfection from the greedy shakey hands That received it. In fact a day or two after my grandmother had passed away, I don’t know if the manager lady named [name removed] is losing it or if she’s on strong drugs or if she’s just acting like the people the residents, there but day or two after my grandmother had passed away, when i was cleaning my granmas apt out, i guess she didnt recognize me but I heard her muttering as she was walked down the hall about ”us people wanting a picture of our dead” loved one, us “kind of people” . No more flattery from her now, her palms are finished being greased.

I moved into Walker Place about 2 years ago. I was so unsure what I wanted to do. My family was not in agreement. At 96, I knew I could not stay at home. I had looked at several places and really felt like it was home when I came to Walker Place. In my 2 years, I can honestly say I never had a meal I did not like. The food was some of the best I have ever had. I'm not a picky eater, but I can tell you, I do like good food. The girls that take care of me every day are so kind and I always felt like I was the most important person to them, no matter how busy they are. I love my friends and my neighbors and when I think of what a good decision this was for me, I can't stop smiling. There is just a lot of Joy at my home, and I thank God daily for allowing me to live at such a special place. I hope you chose this as your next, forever more home and join me with this wonderful family. [name removed] This was transcribed by [name removed] just months before her passing. The landscape of life is unknown and full of uncertainty. "That's better than the alternative" you think. Maybe, but in time there will come days when you just need more. Hips break. Hearts fail. Memories blur. Partners leave before us. WE have decisions to make. What are we going to do with the rest of our lives? How do we want to live? I heard someone say, "Hey, a friend of yours is moving into Walker Place". We thought we had better check out all our options. We visited each place over a couple months and then we visited Walker Place and that was the last stop we made. We took a tour of Walker and at the end of the tour, we sat in the 1 bedroom suite to rest, and my wife piped up "We'll take it!" She had seen and heard enough to know this would be our final home. WE have been here for 6 months, and the decision was the RIGHT ONE. THe good things of life...happiness, purpose, contentment, companionship have been with us since day one at Walker. Good friends, food food, art, worth and warmth are here for us each day. Walker Place is comfortable, cheery, warm and pleasant. We (they) change with the seasons and go above and beyond for the people inside (and outside) the community. About the only thing that comes to us without effort is old age. We don't want to be young again, but to age peacefully. Good family life is never an accident but is always an achievement and abundant at Walker Place. You cannot escape life. Come over and live with us and enjoy each day. You won't regret it. I sure done! [name removed], Resident

Our experience with my mother at Walker was not a good one, girls who provide care are stretched so thin it’s awful, they’re expected to care for residents, work dining room, do laundry and trash removal as well all while trying to care for residents. They run short staffed all the time although the girls try their best they can only do so much. The girls were so good to my mother but I think it’s terrible what all they’re expected to do, resident care should be their concern and not all the other things expected of them!
