Each category is a 4 from my perspective. I would say, however, that I give a majority of the staff members that I met or came across a 5 in the friendliness category. Each time I personally requested something via phone or email, my request was handled quickly and professionally. I was aware that there were many aspects of the business at Pioneer living that were in transition when my mom moved in. Including maintenance staff, etc. But our personal experience was very positive as some of the kinks were getting worked out. I will say that some of the back-and-forth and lag time were frustrating to my mother. My mother is a resident in one of the independent living cottages with an attached garage. In terms of cleanliness, I would rate her cottage a 3 overall as the floors were not clean, there were dead bugs in corners and a good bit of baseboard dust. On the positive side for cleanliness, the paint was fresh and her kitchen appliances were very clean. Her trash was picked up often and this is much appreciated. Mom and I have only eaten once in the cafeteria and the food was excellent and we were treated very kindly. But we have not had any further experience with the food as of yet. Mom eats most if not all of her meals in her cottage. One thing that would have been helpful if it could have been arranged was the roundtable meeting. Our schedule made it quite difficult for the staff to schedule this with us. So not pointing any fingers here. But I think it would have been helpful to my mom, especially. A staff member has seen to it that my mom has access to a larger print version of the activities calendar. Thank you very much for this effort. It means a great deal to mom. Many of the cottage residents have invited my mom multiple times to attend group activities with them. We both appreciate this. Mom has veiled herself of the bus field trips and shopping trips a few times already and has only had very high praise for that experience. She is very complementary of the way the driver handles these events. And Pioneer living scored way off the charts with my mom when she found out that she would have a ride to vote! Thank you for that as well. My last comment is in regards to the value for cost. I rate this as a 4+. Mom's cottage checks just about every single box for her. While her living situation will never be perfect, we would choose Pioneer senior living again if we had to make a choice.... Read more

My mother is 89 years old. She rented an apartment in the independent living section and many promises were made. There was constant problems with the food services that were promised, she spent three days in her apartment with NO heat in December and no one in the building could fix it or get anyone to come fix, and many other issues with the construction of the vents, doors, and windows. In addition, her dishwasher did not work, they could not figure out why. She asked them to pull it out and they discovered it NEVER HAD AN ELECTRIC CORD to it. She was promised a face to face meeting with someone from corporate on a Tuesday. Never happened. My mother moved, I called and told them the issues and why she was moving. In addition, I requested they not charge her the two months notice, due to all the issues and was promised a call back after they spoke with management that DAY. Never happened. Now, they are trying to collect over $[removed] from my mom. Do not rent from these folks.

Response from Vitality Living Upland Park
August 2, 2023Hello, Vitality Living strives to provide exceptional care to all our residents, families, and team members. They have not been able to give us a schedule for when Physical therapy will come so that we can organize our own physical therapy. We were led to believe that they would use the pure wick system when we got in there but now they absolutely refuse and have not been using the transfer methods that we went there with the belief that they would use and mom has been somewhat injured. The call buttons have not been working and my mom has been left unattended on the toilet for over an hour for three days in a row. We have communicated with the Director and not much has changed. Their call system does not seem to work and off and when I called to try to get help from someone after mom has push the button and not been helped the phone system for the whole building is down and nobody answers at the concierge's desk. There have been some obnoxious and rude staff who have made the experience scary. There is not a good system in to hold the employees culpable there are not enough cameras around for security. The door is hard for a handicap person to open and lock. Feeling pretty sure that their contribution towards my mothers dwindling strength is going to give them an excuse to kick them out and they will keep large down payment. There are lots of ridiculous hidden fees as in if somebody wants to take their food from the cafeteria they charge them [fee removed] even if they are taking the food themselves not having it delivered. My dad has been charged 3 to 4 times the cost of medicine when they charge him from Vitality versus when he has the prescription mailed to him amounting and over [fee removed] a month there are a lot of hidden fees and when they're not doing their job on the front end it doesn't seem worth it. Especially when the call button don't even work.

We chose Vitality Living Upland Park because right when we walked in, my mom felt comfortable. The staff and residents were very welcoming. The apartment sizes are about what you would expect, she has no complaints. Mom is happy here therefore I would absolutely recommend the facility to others.

The Staff goes over and above for their tenants. Every worker knows my father-in-law by name and if they haven't seen him that day, they will go and check on him. It's a new community and we do understand but My father-in-law will like a different menu selection. Above all it's a Great Place for him and he really enjoy living there.

The community is extra fabulous because it is new, and the staff is wonderful. They work great with the residents. The staff communication is excellent with the family, and they make sure the family is involved with the care plan. You can tell they truly care about the residents. The food provided by the community is excellent. There are three meals a day and snacks provided by to the residents. There are choices for the residents as well. The residents can also order off cycle meals in case they were away for appointments at the time of the meal. It is one price for everything, and this is very nice because you don't have to worry about the levels of additional costs. It keeps it simple for budgeting.

We love it here. I like the staff. They do a very good job, although they do have limited staff right now. Our cottage is perfect for us. There are no stairs - everything is all one floor. It has everything we need, and I like that it's new, although over time I've noticed that it looks like the contractor was in a hurry. But anything I tell them about, they take care of right away, which I appreciate.

A Place for Mom has scored Vitality Living Upland Park 8.6 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
