Unfortunately mom was only there a few days as she had a stroke 3 days after moving in and passed a week later. I cannot say enough good things about every aspect of Kanawha Place. Highly recommend to anyone looking for that type of a facility, top-notch in all areas.

Kanawha Place currently meets the needs of my mother in law. They are not equipped for meeting the needs of dementia patients such as my mother. BUT KP are experiencing all under staffed, underpaid, and could do a better job interacting with their very vulnerable residents. I overheard an argument (resident yelling I hate you and the KP staff said well I hate you too.) Breaking my heart. This was between a trained KP staff member and resident who clearly was struggling and having a difficult moment. I could only imagine what was happening with my mother. Sickening! My 3 sisters and I are very hands on with our mother. If we were there, KP would not step in to assist our mother. It would fall 100% on us to toilet and care for our mother
The staff at Kanawha Place went above and beyond to make my father feel comfortable while he was there. He wasn’t very mobile so the staff would make sure he didn’t need anything several extra times a day. He liked the food and made friends with the staff who took care of him. I recommend Kanawha Place as a clean, comfortable and accommodating home for those who need extra care and attention.

I am very unhappy with your facility. I came and did a tour with the Community Relations Director Monday, [date removed]. I told the Community Relations Director on Tuesday, I would get back with her and let her know what my Sister's and my plans were. I received a call from the Customer Relations Director everyday. Wednesday I sent her to voicemail, Thursday I sent her to voicemail and Friday I Sent her to voicemail and then she did the ultimate act of betrayal for a company to allow someone to do. She broke the hippa regulations. After, I didn't answer her on Friday she took it upon herself to go to the facility that my father is in and speak to his social worker and take it upon herself to tell the social worker that she had been in contact with his family about moving him. So, to offically let you know NO, none of my family will be coming to stay at your facility because someone has a BIG MOUTH. So. You can thank the Community Relations Director.

Response from Kanawha Place
April 30, 2024Hi Julie, Thank you for taking the time to leave the review. I've been in close communication with Kanawha Place's Executive Director and Community Relations Director regarding your experience. Please note, from the standpoint of a senior living professional, our CRD did not violate HIPPA. With that said, we do not ever want prospective residents or their families to feel disrespected throughout their senior living search. I've shared your feedback with the community team and our Regional Director of Operations for West Virginia.
I am greeted by name almost always. My mother is always greeted by name. If I am with my mom in the dining room, the chef will ask me if I want to join, Ask if he can bring me a bowl or a plate. He will prepare a meal for me specifically. The chef also ask my mother if she “wants something else”. There have been times when she doesn’t like the chili or something else and he has offered her a different item. The nurses are wonderful. They check on her, they bring her medication on time and are friendly and talkative with her. The laundry is done and folded. The room is tidied and cleaned. The salon will fix her hair or anything that she needs. The PT is done on a regular basis. The activities are planned and she is encouraged to join. The place is not fancy. It is, in a way, plain. Simple. But that is part of it's charm. There is a key pad to enter and leave. There is often not someone at the front desk (at least when I stop in) but that seems to be ok because the nurses seem to take care of anything my mom needs. When the front desk person is there, she is very kind and welcoming. But the place seems small enough, that if I ever need anything or have a question, someone points me in the right direction. The place is not Immaculate. But it IS super tidy and more importantly, it feels very homey. My mom is doing much better here than she did at her last place. Why is that? THE PEOPLE. Older people need to be talked to, asked after, they want to have conversation. It is very easy for them to feel invisible. Climb into their shell and just “be”. They must have people to ask them to participate, ask them to join in, insist that they make a gingerbread house, or paint a picture, play a card game or work a puzzle. They must be encouraged. I believe that KP is doing that. People. It is all about the people. My hope is that Kanawha Place is paying their people well. If they are not, and they can do better, I hope they do so and do so soon. Keep your people! Keep your cleaning staff, keep your nurses. Keep your therapists. Keep them! Consistency is everything with older people. Right now KP has a really good staff. If they keep it, they will keep getting more clients, if they lose them, they will lose clients. At least they will lose me. I want people who want to be around my mom. Want to be working with her, not sitting on their phones or griping about their jobs. I want people who care. Don’t we all? The cleaning staff, the hairdressers, the social activities directors. These are the “things” that will keep your rooms full. People don’t care that there is a movie theatre or a fancy sitting area, they care that there is someone sitting with their loved one, asking them how their day was. So far, I think Kanahwa Place is doing that. I hope they continue. As they continue to be kind, caring sensitive humans, I will continue to sing their praises. It is hard to find good people. Very, very hard. So when you do, keep them and pay them well!

Could not have asked for a better experience from initial sign up to move in. ENTIRE Staff and facility is top notch. The location and type of rooms and services available best met our needs compared to 2 others in Charleston market.

We moved my loved one here from another facility and there was a big difference between the two. The care he received from Kanawha Place and hospice during the last two weeks of his life was fantastic and we all would have suffered greatly if he had still been at the previous facility.

We moved our parents there after 6 weeks of very poor care at [facility name removed]. Kanawha Place was amazing from the first day. My in-laws were well cared for, clean, and well fed. The staff was always available to lend an extra hand. When our family had to spend the night to be with our dying loved one, the staff offered meals and support. We highly recommend Kanawha Place.

This was a nice and was an older community. It didn't have the modern aspects that we wanted for our loved one.

I was very disappointed with my experience at Kanawha Place. I brought my mother here and the first day a roach ran across the floor. I moved her out immediately.

I've spoken w/folks at Kanawha Place several times. Very nice and informative. Rates here are about the same as she is paying, so no help there. She's decided to "stay put" at the present time; but definitely worth checking into. Like the fact that Kanawha Place is a smaller facility than where she is currently.

A Place for Mom has scored Kanawha Place 9.4 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
