Very disappointed

Moving into Brookdale was a entire new way of living for my Aunt. She had been on her own for over 40 yrs. She was a bit more nervous than excited only because it was all brand new to her. Just after being there a few weeks she had a couple assisted living associates start bullying her instead of reaching out and helping her, as they were supposed to do. I brought this up to management several times and was informed that they were looking into it. Several gals employed by Brookdale to take care of residents there, were actually showing up to help her and instead they would call her ugly names and give her a hard time. No one would believe a 98 yr old woman, so they kept doing it for several more weeks, with no management stepping in. Her last few weeks here, were tormented by a few staff members, which is just so very wrong ! Brookdale dropped the ball BIG time. They should've stepped up and addressed this issue, which they did NOT ! No one should be treated that poorly....

Outstanding service in a care continuum

The CEO, [name removed], and other management care about the residents and bend over backwards to assist them as needed. They treat my mother like a member of their own family. The facility is well-maintained, the bus drivers are safe and helpful, the activities are varied, interesting, and fun. This is a good community.

A Great Community in Tucson

I have recommended the community to others. The only issue we have right now is the community is short staff and which leads to not being able to get things done in time. However other than that my loved one enjoys it here. Everyone seems to be very friendly here.

Extremely comfortable in a secure location

We chose Brookdale Santa Catalina because of the location - it is close to our out children and also because of the quality of the staff members. The apartment sizes are just right for what we need and it is a very quiet place. The meals are chef prepared and they have a very diverse menu. Every day we have about 6 or 7 things to choose from. The food has been outstanding - much better than we ever expected. They have a rec center and a hair salon so that is a big plus. They also have transportation available to doctors appointments, stores, casinos, etc. so that is a very nice feature to have. We have been very happy and I would absolutely recommend this facility to others.

Tour of Brookdale

Brookdale seemed like a nice place. They do offer independent living, assisted living, and memory care but it is all very separated. The person who was supposed to give me the tour was unable to and the person who filled in did not really seem to know what was going on. I do have friends whose loved ones are here and they are all happy with their experiences.

Fresh and bright. Rooms are for those who've managed to downsize more that we have. We liked their full range of care but it is not really ADA friendly. Few handicap parking spots. Monthly rent in Assisted living higher than others in the Tucson market

I'd move in there myself

First off, the staff are wonderful. They're delightful, very professional, and very caring. I don't get to visit every day, and I know they're watching out for my loved one. She is hard of hearing, so she's not sure if the residents are responding to her hellos or not. They seem to be a little cliquey, but she's only been there a few months. It's a pet friendly community, and she loves seeing the different pets when she's out and about walking. Another thing I think is terrific is they have a physician who is there once a week and available for appointments. They also bring in a podiatrist. My loved one loves the food. She says it tastes good, and is the right portion size for senior citizens. One of the reasons she chose Brookdale was because she wasn't ready to give up cooking altogether, and she has a full kitchen in her apartment. She fixes her own breakfast and lunch, but she does have her dinners delivered to her. With Covid, they've had some limitations on activities, but they're definitely trying. The director of activities sends out notifications on what they're offering. I've seen from the lobby there's a group that enjoys playing Wii bowling. I feel like it's an outstanding value at Brookdale Santa Catalina.

Very Happy Here!

My wife and I moved into Brookdale Santa Catalina four years ago (2016), and we are very glad we did so. We realized that, as we are getting older, we no longer want the responsibilities of taking care of a house and yard, and we no longer need most of the possessions that we have accumulated for years. We lived in southwest Florida at that time, so we looked into several retirement facilities there. Among these, some required a substantial initial investment in turn for a lifetime guarantee of a home. Others were in high-rise buildings which felt more like hotels to us. Since our son lives in Tucson, we decided to investigate several retirement facilities there. As soon as we visited Brookdale Santa Catalina, we knew it was our first choice! We were delighted with its location in the foothills of the Santa Catalina range overlooking Tucson below. The traffic and other noise here is minimal in comparison with facilities in the city. The scenery is incredible with the mountains rising up within a short walk from our apartment. We are located in the center of a gated community that includes million-dollar homes with beautiful desert landscaping. The neighborhood is a wonderful place for walking due to a minimum of traffic and affords great views over the Tucson valley and surrounding mountains. We were immediately impressed that all residential buildings are only two stories high and are separated by paved walkways. The main building has a large lounge where community meetings, concerts, happy hours, and other programs are held. A library is adjacent to the lounge. The upstairs dining room offers splendid views of the Santa Catalinas to the north and of the Tucson valley to the south. Our chefs do a great job of providing menus with several choices twice each day. The friendly young servers quickly learn our names and go beyond their duties to make us happy. No tipping is allowed. Staff members in the other departments are equally accommodating. Our community offers a large variety of daily activities, many of which are on campus while others involve bus trips out to restaurants, happy hours, picnics, concerts, stores, museums, doctor visits, and even to out-of-town events. A hair salon, gym, and heated swimming pool are on site. The opportunity to swim outdoors in full view of the nearby mountains was especially attractive to me! In-house movies are shown every night through the tv’s in our apartments. The apartments in Independent Living vary from two-bedroom suites with 1455 square feet to smaller two-bedroom units ranging from 1330 to 900 square feet, and there are several sizes of one-bedroom units. Rent is by the month, and one can move out with a two-month notice. All apartments have emergency pull cords and a button to “check in” each morning. The campus also includes an Assisted Living building that includes skilled nursing and memory-care facilities.

Their chef is fabulous

Their chef is fabulous, their kitchen and food is the most outstanding feature of the entire facility. My daughter came to visit and wanted to see where we eat so they invited us for lunch. The atmosphere of the dining area is very homey with a beautiful view of the mountains. The walls are all glass and you can look out and enjoy the amazing view while you are dining. The waitresses are wonderful. I have low vision so she assisted me with ordering, making sure that I didn’t miss anything. They are very professional. The menu options are six different entrees every day for lunch and dinner. If you are not hungry you can just order a soup or salad. They also have continental breakfast in the mornings and all the food served has the most adequate portioned size. They have many activities too, but I’m not sure how many. I am not active as I use to be however the staff encourages you to be up and about. They have a swimming pool onsite that I would like to try. The area is wonderful, the layout is great, and it’s a gated community from outside traffic. You would need to know someone to get in. There is someone manning the gate all the time which is a great safety feature than adds to the security. I love this place that I already started recommending it to others.

Look twice. Ask a lot of questions.

My mother has been living at La Rosa (Assisted care and Alzheimer's care) for 2+ years. It was good when we moved in HOWEVER, Management has become a major issue. There has been turn over in key management positions including the Executive Director, the Head of Nursing and two event coordinators, all in the past 14 months. These management positions are extremely important to run a caring, well structured and good facility for the residents. The end result in this lack of management is employee turnover, no continuity of nursing care, and an overall depression of the staff. I would not recommend this facility. Thank you for taking time to read my review and please take into account before making a choice for yourself or a loved one.
