Response from Astoria Senior Living Omaha
November 15, 2024Thank you so much for your review of Astoria Senior Living and Memory Care in Omaha. We're happy to hear your experience has been primarily positive. We've completed much of our remodel, and have some great new improvements. We do apologize for any inconvenience related to our progress!
The staff is so friendly and kind. They know every resident and call them by name. The food is DELICIOUS and varied. My parents at the age of 88 have a more lively social life than I do! There is always something interesting to do each day, from musical performances to outings. There is a physical therapist that comes to the facility and helps my father with mobility issues. There is transportation to doctor appointments, if needed. This facility does not charge for every single thing like other places do. Highly recommend!!!

August 29, 2024Lori - thanks so much for your review! We're thrilled that your parents are living vibrantly at Astoria! We'll pass along your kind words to our entire team.
Started out as a nice place but they lost my wife’s cellphone the second day. They still have not found it, in a lock down area. I think it was an employee but they were still saying it was another patient. My wife lost clothes and bedding, the day before she was to leave someone removed her transport chair from her room. They had to look for it. The food was not the best and had no selection. (Eat what you get). Certainly not worth the $[removed] a month that they charge. More but it would take more than the 1000 characters.

When Astoria purchased Sunrise, they did not disclose entire information, lost initial paperwork, and did not communicate changes. My mom's room was always neat and picked up. Not prestigious. There was always dust. The staff that I encountered was always friendly. Sometimes we're notified and sometimes not, about an incident. Hospice does most of the work with my mom. They are the one's that keep us up to date. We very seldom get any news from Astoria. The staff has changed significantly. I only know 1 person that was originally there from Sunrise. No one seems to know what belongs to who. It took 5 weeks to locate my mom's new glasses. She's not able to do a lot of activities. With Sunrise, she was never left alone. They said whatever communication she could ingest would keep her brain healthy. Now when I visit, she is always alone in her room. Sunrise never left anyone alone in the room. They had them out at least listening. I feel she is set in her room to waste away. She's there because I can't be with her 24/7. Astoria obviously doesn't care about memory care. What she is paying (18,000 a month) and with hospice doing most of the work and now they've said she can't stay there on Medicaid, once again I have to move her. Sunrise said that she could die there. Astoria should not be recommended to anyone. They are not truthful.

Response from Astoria Senior Living Omaha
June 18, 2024We're sorry to hear this feedback about our community. Upon a transition in ownership and management, changes to services can occur, and new agreements outline these changes. We believe we communicated effectively, but we understand you do not agree. We do believe you've spoken to several individuals from both Astoria and Agemark. If you'd like to speak further, you can reach out to info@agemark.com.
The staff is friendly, location is convenient, it's very clean, the food is excellent, and the staff is quite flexible with eating times. There is ample opportunity for people to take part in numerous activities. I get somewhat frustrated with the response tome to questions/concerns we have had. But, we must understand they are dealing with numerous community members, who all have families who may have questions. It's just that since we are new to this I feel we have more questions that need to be addressed. I'm certain that will slow down and everything will We just fine. All staff members we have interacted with have been kind and flexible. And the community members, wow, they are so welcoming!

March 19, 2024Thank you so much for your kind review of Astoria Senior Living and Memory Care in Omaha. We appreciate your great comments about our location, cleanliness, activities, food and staff flexibility. We will pass this information along to our team, as you mentioned that the timeliness of communication could improve. You're right, we do have a lot of families to communicate with, but we strive to be on top of that for all. Thank you so much! We appreciate you.
They've been in the process of renovating since we toured in October. The Memory Care manager is delightful. Care staff is a hit and miss, med staff marginally English-speaking that is if I can figure out who is med staff. I found out some of the best staff were contracted or agency and Astoria let them go at the end of December. Some staff seem to have favorite residents with whom they spend more time. The food has been all over the place. At times, not enough sent to memory care so staff had to decide how to ration. It is better now, but I sense a distinctly higher quality for assisted living than what is sent to memory care. Some items very impractical for people 90+ years to eat. The activities have been good and that is because there were many entertainment events in December. Now, not much at all. Sitting in front of a large screen tv is not socializing. I rated the value for cost at a 1 and that is because we were promised so much, signed contract and paid money, but not finding what was promised AND price was raised immediately.

Overall our family really likes the friendliness of the staff. They have a lot of patience with her. I don't like that after 6 pm you have to call someone to get in or out. Sometimes, you have to wait a while.

January 10, 2024Thanks so much for your feedback, we truly appreciate it. We're glad that you find our staff friendly and patient. I understand it can be tough outside of primary building hours to get access inside. We'll take this feedback and see how we can make improvements.
When you place a love one in an assisted living facility you expect them to provide excellent service and quality care, but that’s not the case with this place. The head staff members don’t greet you upon arrival, it takes about 45 mins for the nurse to respond to a room call, the staff aren’t properly trained on how to administer medicine, and they can change the monthly rate without notifying you about the drastic increase. Save your money and your time and place your loved one somewhere else! My grandma did a quick decline at this facility and I truly believe the terrible care along with the long response times attributed to her suffering there. In fact, I know it did because after she transitioned my family didn’t hear anything from the head nurse or manager in regards to their sympathy. Learn from our mistake and RECONSIDER!!

January 10, 2024We're sorry to hear this feedback and apologize that you had a negative experience with our community. That is not what we strive for. We do take pride in the care we can provide for residents of Astoria and are open to making improvements in areas where we may have fallen short. If you'd like to speak further with a member of our team, we'd encourage you to reach out.
I chose Astoria because I had a great tour and they assured me they would be accommodating to my mom's needs. I like the fact that they have a separate memory care unit. Besides the above I would tell a friend about the salon and activity options.

August 29, 2023Thank you so much for your thoughtful review - we're glad you noticed some of the great offerings in our community. We take pride in the customized care that we're able to provide to all Astoria residents. We'll share your kind feedback with our team!
Based on our experience with Astoria Senior Living, they are way over priced. The hidden fees and additional costs are never explained. The billing is confusing even for a CPA. Cannot afford to move my parent and begin the 2 year private pay requirement over again.

June 30, 2023Anonymous, first, thank you for submitting a review of Astoria in Omaha. Our goal is to provide excellent care and services at a fair price. We do know that the cost of senior living has risen, especially in the last few years, due to increases in expenses, wages and more. We would be happy to discuss your billing with you at any time, and explain anything that is confusing. If you'd like to speak to the ED of the community, reach out directly, or if you'd like to talk to the Regional Director of Operations that oversees this community, please email info@agemark.com.
I am very disappointed with Astoria. I went into the hospital and when I came hoping to return I was told I couldn't return because I required too much care. I'm sorry but I cannot recommend that facility. I think the staff was great. The food was good. Sometimes I feel I waited an excessive amount of time before staff answered my call light and there was once I waited three weeks for my shower.

Our loved one really likes the meals and every time we come to visit the community is always really clean. We get to see different activities the activity coordinator puts on and our loved one mentally is kept active who promotes her mind health. We would recommend the Brighton Gardens of Omaha to other families.

Response from Astoria Senior Living Omaha
January 26, 2023Hi Customer, Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Brighton Gardens of Omaha and the dedicated care givers and team members. Our residents are part of the Sunrise family and we take enormous pride in having the privilege to take care of them.
Before you decide to move here ask for additional cost. You can quickly go from the base price to twice or even more. Seems the "assisted" part will cost you more! They refuse to tell you what they are charging you for when they double or even more each month. To be able to live here and to keep the base price you to have no help of any kind. And the will bill you monthly for giving you your required prescriptions. [amount removed]a month even if it one or two prescriptions, and even it over the counter! That is not counting the cost of your drugs they obtain from a local company that supplies your presciptions. Also, if you are ill, or having loose bowels, etc., you have to go down to the dining room or be charged [fee removed] for each meal they bring to your room. In other words you can be on your " death bed" and you are suppose to Get out of you get and go down to the dining room! All in all they will find ways with excuses to increase your bill. Ask them to itemize their charges. Good luck!

July 27, 2022Hi PG, Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Brighton Gardens of Omaha and the dedicated care givers and team members. Our residents are part of the Sunrise family and we take enormous pride in having the privilege to take care of them.
The staff are horrible and do not go with the wishes of the family and have been very difficult to deal with. They will not answer questions or provide me with any information. I would tell others that they will not provide the type of care that they say they will. If you have power of attorney or guardianship then good luck. The memory care is not locked down, they give anyone the key code to go in or out which is not safe. I would never recommend them to others.
Response from Astoria Senior Living Omaha
May 17, 2022Hi Customer, We take your experience at Sunrise of Brighton Gardens of Omaha very seriously and would like to review this matter closer. Please contact info@sunriseseniorliving.com so we can promptly review and address these concerns. – The Sunrise Team
I would give the caregivers at Brighton Gardens of Omaha a 5, but the way the company manages and pays them would receive a 2. it is very high cost and they sneak things in to raise the price. when you actually sit down with the people who are responsible for translating care to dollar charges, they are not transparent. they say things like, "we don't make the decision as to what to charge. we are not in charge of the algorithm", they will blame it on the company. when you look up the company, you will see that it is under an influx of umbrella companies. once you get up the ladder of different companies, you'll learn that Brighton Garden is just one out of hundreds, all owned by a corporation of some sort. because of this, their first concern is not of the residents, it's the payback of stock holders who are involved in the REITs. the companies who own Brighton Garden are real estate management companies, not healthcare (provider) companies. it's a very pretty place, it looks like a luxury hotel. however, when it comes to the day to day care of your loved one, you can see where things are skipped, shortcut, or completely ignored in order to make a profit and pay their investors good dividends. as the POA of one of their residents, I've had to complain to management. they have a dining room area where residents can heat up coffee and take snacks. ultimately the meals are served in that room throughout the day on hot carts. during the first five months of my loved ones stay, the microwave was not working. the staff complained about it and they did nothing. when I spoke with management I threatened to take my complaint further, and a new microwave magically showed up. I've noticed other things like loose screws and the doors falling off the cupboards. when I am in town I spend everyday there with my loved one for multiple hours, so I am able to see much more than the typical visitor. I'm able to talk to management, observe the condition of the facility and I've had time to interact with the staff in a much more in-depth way. the people who provide the day to day care and the housekeepers are heroic. I know that my loved one can be challenging due to her age and health; but her room is always kept spotless and the housekeeper was always glad to do what needed to be done. she never complained either. she, unfortunately, had to leave the community because they were paying her minimum wage, and the job that she was doing was worth much more than that. the caregivers are great as well and do an excellent job. there is such a high turnover that no one there currently (that I've come in contact with) has been there for more than a year because of the pay. it's not the aides, nurses or caregivers; it's the people who manage them. I would advise other families to look for a company that does not have multiple layers of management. look for a privately owned community, not one owned as part of a conglomerate. a privately owned community will be a lot closer to its residents and will do a much better job at providing better care.

The size of the rooms this community offered really stood out to us as well as the people there. It felt like home. We were able to eat some meals with our loved one before COVID and we thought they had a good menu, and the residents has different options to choose from.
