Our experience with Victorian Cottage has been a very good one! The woman who runs the place, Ronelle, has been very friendly and easy to work with, and everyone here is very friendly. The place is well kept and clean, and they do a great job looking after the residents.

They do a fantastic job. If you could put the environment they have here, into a new facility, it would give it a twenty. It's not very impressive looking, but the trade-off is well worth it, depending on the activity level of the person who is going to be living there. The facility itself is old and it's crowded, some of the rooms have four people to a room. It's a converted house, and the furnishings are old, the hallways are narrow and not so well lit, but it's comfortable and the people there are phenomenal. It's all very clean, and there are no odors. Every resident there is happy, you never hear complaints, and they all look out for each other. The activity level is not as busy as some of the places, but they do have activities sometimes. It's a great fit for us and we are very happy there.

Discover the many ways to pay for senior living

Planning ahead can better position you to make good choices for your loved one’s care in the future. But if your aging family member needs care now, there are ways to finance the cost of long-term care through a combination of approaches.

What are care homes?

Residential care homes are houses in residential neighborhoods that are equipped, adapted, and staffed to care for a small number of residents, usually between two and 10. Like assisted living communities, staff at care homes typically help residents with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, and medication management. Although residential care homes vary significantly depending on the community, services usually include:

  • Help with personal care
  • Medication management
  • Mobility assistance
  • Nutritious meals
  • Social activities and outings
  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry

This small, mostly residential township on the southwestern outskirts of the Pittsburgh metro offers a quiet, suburban retirement. For major shopping centers, North Huntingdon residents can make the short trip to nearby Irwin or head northwest into the City of Bridges.

In North Huntingdon, residential care homes — sometimes called care homes, board and care homes, group homes, or personal care homes — are often houses in residential neighborhoods that are adapted, equipped, and staffed to care for a small number of residents, usually 10 or less. Similar to assisted living but in a smaller, more residential setting, these homes provide supervision, organized events, and assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs). This means care homes can help with everyday routines but typically do not provide 24-hour skilled nursing assistance.

Cost of Care Homes in North Huntingdon, PA

The median monthly cost of a room in a care home is about $1,700 in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and $2,000 in the state of Pennsylvania. However, the cost of living in a care home depends largely on location. Since the homes are private residences, costs are tied to real estate value and therefore may vary greatly.
