Cedar Hills in Portland, OR
4.5

The staff at this care home work with the family. They are flexible and get to know the residents. There is a Registered Nurse on site. The community is clean as they are particular about the environment. They are knowledgeable about the rules and regulations in Oregon. The food seems healthy and is homemade. They offer fresh vegetables. They do go on occasional outings and they have card games and puzzles to cater to each resident.

Rose City Adult Care in West Linn, OR
5.0

My 89-year old mother is non ambulatory and has cognitive dysfunction. My greatest concern was that she would be left in front of the TV all day. I had to fight her to get her out of bed when she lived in my home. She has only been in the Rose City Adult Care Home for two weeks so she is still adjusting, but I drop by at different hours nearly every day and I have yet to find her in her room. She is usually at the table with her friend working on a jigsaw puzzle. The staff is very accommodating to my mother's particular needs and I am grateful that I found them.

Discover the many ways to pay for senior living

Planning ahead can better position you to make good choices for your loved one’s care in the future. But if your aging family member needs care now, there are ways to finance the cost of long-term care through a combination of approaches.

What are care homes?

Residential care homes are houses in residential neighborhoods that are equipped, adapted, and staffed to care for a small number of residents, usually between two and 10. Like assisted living communities, staff at care homes typically help residents with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, and medication management. Although residential care homes vary significantly depending on the community, services usually include:

  • Help with personal care
  • Medication management
  • Mobility assistance
  • Nutritious meals
  • Social activities and outings
  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry

This dynamic, bustling suburb west of Portland distinguishes itself through an extensive parks system and a booming economy largely based on the collection of tech giants that call the city home, earning it the nickname “Silicon Forest.” With Main Street serving as the anchor of a charming downtown area, Hillsboro maintains a vibrant local culture including a variety of theaters, arts festivals, and historic sites like Imbrie Farm.

In Hillsboro, residential care homes — sometimes called care homes, board and care homes, group homes, or personal care homes — are often houses in residential neighborhoods that are adapted, equipped, and staffed to care for a small number of residents, usually 10 or less. Similar to assisted living but in a smaller, more residential setting, these homes provide supervision, organized events, and assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs). This means care homes can help with everyday routines but typically do not provide 24-hour skilled nursing assistance.

Cost of Care Homes in Hillsboro, OR

The median monthly cost of a room in a care home in 2019 was about $4,000 in Hillsboro, within the Portland metropolitan area, and in the state of Oregon. However, the cost of living in a care home depends largely on location. Since the homes are private residences, costs are tied to real estate value and therefore may vary greatly.
