Discover the many ways to pay for senior living

Planning ahead can better position you to make good choices for your loved one’s care in the future. But if your aging family member needs care now, there are ways to finance the cost of long-term care through a combination of approaches.

What are care homes?

Residential care homes are houses in residential neighborhoods that are equipped, adapted, and staffed to care for a small number of residents, usually between two and 10. Like assisted living communities, staff at care homes typically help residents with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, and medication management. Although residential care homes vary significantly depending on the community, services usually include:

  • Help with personal care
  • Medication management
  • Mobility assistance
  • Nutritious meals
  • Social activities and outings
  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry

Learn More About Care Homes in St. Paul, MN

St. Paul – the capital of Minnesota – is one of the “Twin Cities,” along with its close neighbor Minneapolis. The city is located on the banks of the Mississippi, where you can still see the lighted signs of the old breweries that once thrived along its shores.

Residential care homes — sometimes called care homes, board and care homes, group homes, or personal care homes — are often houses in residential neighborhoods that are adapted, equipped, and staffed to care for a small number of residents, usually 10 or less. Similar to assisted living but in a smaller, more residential setting, these homes provide supervision, organized events, and assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs). This means care homes can help with everyday routines but typically do not provide 24-hour skilled nursing assistance.

Cost of Care Homes in St. Paul, MN

The median monthly cost of a room in a St. Paul care home is around $7,000. In the state of Minnesota, the median monthly cost of a room in a care home is about $6,500. However, the cost of living in a care home depends largely on location. Since the homes are private residences, costs are tied to real estate value and therefore may vary greatly.

St. Paul is the capital of Minnesota and one of the oldest cities in the entire state. The city, once home to a thriving economy based around mills and breweries, is located on the banks of the mighty Mississippi river. The city has a rich history, which is why it is no wonder that St. Paul is full of historical buildings that reflect its storied past. Popular historical locations in the city include the James J. Hill House, built by the noted railroad magnate, and the F. Scott Fitzgerald House, which was built by the famed author who lived in St. Paul. The Cathedral of St. Paul and the Capitol Building also offer tours that showcase the unique architecture of the buildings and their role in Minnesota’s history.

St. Paul’s location on the Mississippi River means that the city is filled with scenic trails and parks that can be enjoyed all season round. There are also a number of waterfalls throughout the city, including the Minnehaha Falls and the aptly named Hidden Falls. During the winter months, local residents enjoy snowshoeing and Nordic skiing throughout the parks and along the banks of the river.

One of the most popular destinations in St. Paul (especially among grandkids) is the Science Museum of Minnesota. This nationally recognized museum was founded in 1907 and is home to a large collection of dinosaur fossils, a human body gallery, and an Imax theater. After the museum you can catch a Minnesota Wild hockey game at the Xcel Energy Center, which is located next door. Hockey is by far the most popular sport in the state, and every year thousands of hockey fans fill the arena to capacity for the State Highschool Hockey Championships.

Transportation

St. Paul is connected to the greater Twin Cities metropolitan area by Metro Transit, which operates bus and light rail lines throughout St. Paul, Minneapolis, and the surrounding suburbs. Riders can easily travel from downtown St. Paul to MSP international airport or the Mall of America. The Twin Cities are also nationally recognized for being extremely bike-friendly. The Greenway bike trail connects the entire metro area, providing convenient access to nearly anywhere in the Twin Cities by bicycle.
