The staff has been really good and very supportive of my more difficult mother. I feel like occasionally we have to check in with them about things we notice that they may have missed. She doesn't always want to participate in activities, but I wish they would try to get her at least to go out and sit during activities.

I think Gables does as well or better than most assisted living facilities in northern Utah. Having checked other places I'm convinced the Gables is as good as others in the area including some who charge far more money.

How Can I Understand Assisted Living Costs?

The majority of assisted living communities provide an a la carte system for services. This lets people pick and choose the extra services they need or Don’t need. There also is typically a one-time upfront fee. The amount varies from community to community, but it is typically considered a deposit to reserve your place for a specific time frame. A monthly payment often includes:

  • Base Fee: This is basically like paying rent. The amount is determined by the community you choose, size of unit, type of service and number of people. It typically covers standard amenities such as utilities, housekeeping, maintenance and meals.
  • Care Fee: This portion of the cost covers extra services and level of care needed, which is determined by how many ADLs (activities of daily living) a resident required. The cost for services can run the gamut from hundreds to thousands.
  • Medication Management: Loved ones who need assistance with medications may need to add this service to their monthly fee. The cost varies based on the complexity of the medicine regimen. A health-care expert assists with dosage and ensures medicine is taken when it should be. Additional health- or non-health related services can also be part of the monthly payment. These may include physical therapy, additional meals or other activities.

Although a la carte is most common, some people may benefit from an all-inclusive model. community costs are spread the same for every resident. When choosing a community like this, it is important understand the care your loved needs. A flat fee could result in paying more than one would at another community. On the flipside, it allows for easier cost planning and won t change even if the level of care needed increases.

How Can I Afford Assisted Living?

You want the best for your aging loved one, but the costs associated with providing the care they need can present challenges for a budget. Planning ahead is an important step to ensuring balanced care. Some of the ways people pay for these services include:

  • Personal Income or Savings: People who continue to receive income from a pension or other business ventures can use that for payment. It can be supplemented with savings or investments.
  • Long Term Care Insurance: Many insurance providers have provisions to cover some or all of the costs of care for a specific tie period. It is important to understand the policy clearly. Some policies are community only, which can only be used at a licensed community. These policies often require that a person needs assistance in at least two ADLs, such as bathing, eating or walking, in order to be used.
  • Life Insurance: Depending on the policy, there may be an option to convert life insurance into a long-term payment option. These conversions typically result in receiving between 15 and 50 percent of policy value.
  • Veterans Benefits: Many veterans may be unaware that they can receive assisted living assistance through Veterans Aid and Attendance, which is administered by the Veteran s Administration.
  • Sell or Rent a Home: If a home is unoccupied, it is still a valuable asset. Although selling a cherished home filled with memories is a difficult decision, selling it is an option that can help ensure a loved one s needs are met. For people not ready to take that step, renting a home can provide monthly supplemental income to assist with care costs.

Does Medicare Pay for Assisted Living?

What Are the Signs It s Time for Assisted Living?

While we all want our loved ones to maintain the same levels of activity and independence they once enjoyed, the aging process doesn’t t always bend to our wishes. Simply slowing down doesn’t t mean it s time for a big change, but there are signs that it may be time to start the discussion.

  • Medical Conditions: Unfortunately, the aging process comes with numerous medical conditions. Many of these are chronic and potentially debilitating like Alzheimer s or heart conditions. As these conditions worsen, the amount of medication needed increases, as well as the potential for a medical emergency. In addition to chronic ailments, older adults often are more prone to minor injuries and falls that can become a serious problem.
  • Household Neglect: Although every person has their own standard of clean and how they deal with chores, you know your loved one. If you begin to notice a decline in how they care for their home, it may indicate that it may be too much for them handling. Whether it s dishes piling up, laundry not being done or spoiled food in the refrigerator, being attentive to such changes is a necessary part of caring for an aging loved one.
  • Eating Habits and Hygiene: Maintaining a healthy weight is important at any aging. If you notice your loved one is losing weight or lacks an appetite, they may not be getting the proper nutrition they need. If they begin to have difficulty cooking or going to the store, they may be ready for a higher level of care. Some older adults may being to lose the motivation to take care of themselves. Odor from lack of bathing or poor grooming habits may mean they are beginning to have lose the ability to do the basic tasks necessary for self-care.
  • Budget Issues: Regardless of age, adults have bills to pay and accounts to maintain. As a person ages, it can become more of a daunting task to stay on track. Certain ailments, such as dementia or Alzheimer s, can also begin to affect a person s ability to stay up-to-date with finances. Unfortunately, older adults are often the target of scams, which can lead to dire financial predicaments. If a loved one is struggling with finances, it can begin to affect how they care for themselves and lead to other struggles.
  • Isolation: Inactivity is a leading sign of changing care needs. When once active people begin to isolate themselves, it can lead to depression, addiction and health issues. A decrease in time spent on hobbies, with family and socializing may indicate a bigger issue. Assisted living provides an independent yet social environment for older adults to thrive.
