Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer organized living communities and health care for seniors who require support with things such as self-administering medication or washing. The types of service offered often involve support with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In certain situations, communities may offer nursing care, Alzheimer’s care, or “aging in place”. Texas has specific statutes related to this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities regulates this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activity and/or social program for residents, personal care, assistance with activities of daily living, and supervision or direct administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, and Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include community resources, accessibility requirements, food and nutrition services, and financial management. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as interviews, and home visits, a comprehensive assessment , and must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include returning medications to the proper locked areas, supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, and obtaining medications from a pharmacy. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room.
