Assisted living communities administer care, oversight, and recreational activities to persons who are on average 65 years old. Services provided often include aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, respite, or skilled nursing care. Texas has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities regulates this type of community. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, interviews, and home visits, and a comprehensive assessment . This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general supervision or oversight, personal care, activity and/or social program for residents, and assistance with activities of daily living. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders to take medications at the prescribed time, supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, and assisting residents with taking medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, and communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day. Staff members receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include resident characteristics (including dementia), assisted living standards, accessibility requirements, and financial management. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
