Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer organized living communities and health care for seniors who need a helping hand with meal preparation or bathing. The services offered often involve assistance with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, respite, or dementia care. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $9,292 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $8,373 . Michigan has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses regulates this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, medication supervision and administration, and reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities, The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care, and A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include administration of medication, staff training program based on the residents’ service plans, personal care, and first-aid. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three daily meals and snacks must be provided, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, supervised personal care, guidance, and assisting a resident to keep appointments. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21.
