Birch Bay Retirement Village in Bar Harbor, ME
4.4

My elderly parents have been living at Birch Bay for over 10 years. They have lived in both an independent living apt and assisted living. Now that my Dad is deceased and Mom is dealing with health issues, she moved to assisted living. The level of care is generally very good and I have peace of mind knowing she is receiving the care she needs. The staff is wonderful and very caring and the food is delicious in the dining room. There are a few challenges. Like many retirement communities, BB has struggled to remain fully staffed. This means in independent living, residents who press their alert buttons may have to wait a long time for assistance to arrive. Many staff have had to play multiple roles (cleaning, waiting tables, etc.). The food in Pleasant Cove (assisted living) seems to be mostly leftovers from the dining room at noon of the following day, and sandwiches for the evening meal. Assisted living is also very expensive, and the expenses add up as residents require more care.

Sunnybrook in Brunswick, ME
4.7

Sunnybrook Village is very homey. The staff is really good at handling a difficult transition. They promote a welcoming group among the residents. They really helped mom integrate. The only thing that would help make everything a five is to have a better range of activities. I would like to see them do more with their activity schedule. For example they tried to have pets there periodically but couldn't always pull that together. I would also like to see some more crafts or recreational activities. But it has made a very difficult situation doable. I am pretty happy with this facility.

Dirigo Pines in Orono, ME
4.9

I have lived here for over 4 years. We recently had a large turnover in management which was needed, and all the staff, both remaining long timers and new, are professional, caring, devoted to quality service, and reflect that in their daily interaction with the residents both in the Inn and in the adjacent cottages. The front office is cheerful, competent, and extremely forthcoming. The food is excellent, and varied, and available throughout the day. The campus is gorgeous, the cottages are full size homes. In particular, the campus is within walking distance of the town of Orono, the University of Maine campus a few minutes drive, and the bustling city of Bangor, with its international airport, 3 miles away via highway. There's also a full course golf club within walking distance. This place has it all! I anticipate living here till the end of my life, and are comforted with the knowledge that there are assisted living and memory care facilities should I find myself in need of them.
