The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes regulates this community type. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These areas include identification of conduct constituting abuse and neglect, provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful, emergency preparedness, and attendance policies. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with storage of medications, placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, and communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, and personal preferences relative to care needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include the provision of assisted self-preservation, assisted living care, described as personal services, and administration of medications by a certified medication aide. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program.
