A nursing home is an establishment that provides lodging to two or more individuals who have no personal ties to the administrator. This type of establishment provides its occupants with around-the-clock care administered by registered nurses. These nurses provide maintenance, personal care and other health related services for those who cannot adequately care for their own needs.
This type of community is a familiar and easy care option for persons 65 years or older, however nursing homes will routinely take in individuals 55 and above which is for other senior care types. The most common mental condition experienced by nursing home residents is dementia, which can cloud their memory function, and their sense of familiarity with their surroundings, and decision making abilities. As a resident of a nursing home, you can expect the right to make complaints, to manage your money, form or participate in resident groups, and spend time with visitors. There are some services that may come at a cost to residents which can include flowers and plants, a private room, unless medically needed, and personal clothing.
